I know plus/minus is a bullshit statistic. But it is still a bit jarring to see that Arizona’s best player, all-star Oliver Ekman-Larson, is currently minus 40 for this season.

Plus/minus works on crazy intra-team outliers (Tanner Glass has been a bigger minus than every other Ranger minus combined before) and debunking narratives (Buchnevich has sat for defensive deficiencies despite not taking a single minus over a 10 game span). With Arizona and OEL, if you told me “Emelin deployed in the exact same way would be -70”, I’d buy it.

For those who listen to Jim Rome, Flames coach Glen Gulutzen will be on the show just after 1pm.

Anyone know why it's taking/took so long to retire Lindros' Flyers number? Seems like it would have been a no-brainer even before now.

McCurdy's Cordelia system was fantastic for picking games to bet on last year. His new Edgar system is horrendous for it.

His season points predictions have been quite good over the last 2 years, and are trending that way again this year.

Honest question. I know it's not like they won a Cup or anything because of him, but he's probably the best player they've had in at least the last 30 or 40 years.

maybe the fractious relationshipt they had with his parents. The organization really didn't like them. Snider is dead but Bobby Clarke hated Lindros' father

Have you seen the numbers on teams off the bye? Lots of opportunities to increase your bankroll. Vegas has played two, and is playing another tonight. That being said, it's a hell of a team you've got, and the Bolts are gonna struggle for a while. Hedman out is huge, and Vasy has come back to earth a bit, (right after I traded for him in fantasy). The good news is VGK is 4 points away from cashing my season points over bet.

That is very unfair scheduling. Teams coming off a bye should play each other. Like Jets vs Flames tomorrow afternoon. That game is going to be shit but at least it's fair.

The bye itself seems pretty stupid if you're going to play catchup. Rangers just finished their 4th game in 6 days coming off the bye and will eventually be at 8 games in 13 days which includes a trip out west.

Yeah, I know the stats about teams coming off byes, but don't put a lot of stock into it. Even after almost two years of it, it's still a pretty small sample size. And as far as scheduling, it's something the NHLPA wanted so I assume they're not complaining about compressing the schedule because of it.

Take this with a grain of salt, but seems like a lot of VGK players didn't get beating Florida out of their system after the 5-2 win in Vegas earlier in the season. Even though Smith and Marchessault are the only players who were there under Gallant when he got fired, they all seem to take how he was fired personally.

With Florida coming off their bye, VGK for even money (well, -110) might be the play. And I generally think the markets have overcorrected where betting against VGK is usually the right play.

ETA: Also be aware Subban is in net tonight, but that doesn't worry me too much for betting purposes even if Fleury has been the best goalie in the NHL this season when healthy.

I took them yesterday, for today's game, (for some reason the line was out early) at EV.

With about 35 games left, the path to the President's Trophy at least goes through Las Vegas. Pretty much like everyone expected.

The comments on RMNB are the same. I started to notice it about the beginning of December, but apparently this is a thing that a lot of hockey fans around the continent have decided -- that the expansion rules were too easy and Vegas was somehow gifted a Stanley Cup contender.

Of course, I'd love to see anyone who might have posted that after the expansion draft last June or even around the time the season started.

I can see arguing the exact opposite, that allowing agreements made it too "easy" to future build at the expense of win-now GMs, but there's no credible argument that the rules helped build a contender.

Sure, I doubt any Vegas fans would even argue with that. After the expansion draft, the thought by just about everyone was that this team will probably not be good this season, but could be really good in three or four years, way better than any previous expansion teams because of the assets they were able to acquire (and were expected to be able to continue to acquire at the trade deadline). And not just draft picks, but McPhee plunked some really young high-upside guys like Schmidt, Tuch, Haula, etc. that hasn't always been there in the expansion draft and the idea was to build around those guys in year three, year four.

So if the argument goes something like -- the expansion draft rules were more tilted in any team's favor ever, but not for any kind of serious, immediate success -- then I can buy that. What McPhee shouldn't have been able to do but has is build a team that's really good and still accumulate an insane amount of draft picks including four of the top 35 picks in the last draft. VGK has 10 picks in the first two rounds of the next three drafts. (1sts in 18, 19, 20; a 2nd in 18 and three 2s in 19 and 20).

If they didn't have all of those picks coming through I think you could make the case it might be worth it to deal Neal, but it's not going to happen at this point. I think before the trade deadline they extend Perron for something like three or four years and just commit to letting Neal walk after the season and hope they're able to trade his rights after the season for a late-round pick to a team that might want to negotiate with him before FA starts. I can live with that.
