Ovi's not even top 50 on that list, though he will be soon.

Yeah, I pretty much knew that but the games played stat is interesting.

But yeah, the numbers Gretzky put up in Edmonton are insane and will never be replicated.

And, while Gretzky did play in the high-scoring 80s, it’s always worth noting that he won scoring titles by ridiculous margins.

Jagr is only 35 games from breaking Howe's total games played in the NHL record (Howe has another 419 in the WHA) and 24 from Messier.

Reading that Flames and Jagr are working on a mutual exit.

VERY weird game in DC last night. 3-1 win, but the first goal is something I've never seen, with the cage staying in the pegs, but kind of flipping over onto the GK. Right as the night is being righted, Carlson slaps one that kind of hits the goalie (who was just wearing the net as a cape) and trickles in. And that's just the first goal.

Meh, allegations that he hit him high with an elbow from Caps fans. In the moment, with one of your veterans getting what might've looked like a high elbow which sent him into the boards... Not like he hip checked him in open ice or anything. Those are stupid fights. This one, while probably clean, looked pretty bad in real time.

I'm really ambivalent on banning fighting. You'll see an uptick in retaliatory boarding and slashing calls.

That's always been my reservation, but there are so few enforcers that what does a guy like Rinaldo really have to fear besides the lost paycheck? The league would probably have to get serious about punishing hits (versus the hitter by rep or the result), but it feels like it can be done.

Turned on the Caps game right after that fight. They were interviewing one of the Caps assistants and he was talking with admiration about Smith-Pelly for doing the right thing in that situation and how the rest of the team was all proud of him....etc..etc.

There is just some stuff in hockey like that where you are just supposed to goon it up to protect your guy and deal with the repercussions.

I could do without fighting in most cases...especially the staged ones right after a puck drop because your team is down 7-1 and you are trying to change momentum. But last night's was not that type. Smith-Pelly is not a goon, the fight seemed more natural, and Smith-Pelly did not cheap shot him...came straight after him, made it clear what was about to happen so he could get his gloves off and have a fair shot.

Related note:
A few pages back I posted a graphic about caps guys gone v. new caps. Still feeling pretty good about the value the caps have gotten. DJoos, Smith-Pelly, Bowey, Vrana, Chiasson and Stephenson's combined $4.2M investment are producing.

I think the first thing they need to do is get serious about getting rid of hits to the head.

Oh hell yeah. It’s amazing that they make absolute rules about sticks up high and drawing blood but not about the defender always being responsible for keeping a hit below the shoulders.

Fleury and Neal are the two Knights to go to the All-Star Game. I don't get it. Not that either is unworthy, but if you're trying to both win the game (i.e. put the best lineup out there) and reward play for the first half of the season you have to take Karlsson. Dude is a beast on 3 on 3 to boot.

Seems the NHL just wants name recognition. (That said. Fleury has been almost unbeatable since he got back from the concussion.)

I think they definitely want the names. It’s accepted by everyone in San Jose that Logan Couture has easily been the best Shark this season. But Brent Burns was selected as their sole representative,

Yeah and I get there's other stuff involved (you have an 11-person roster, but have to include all 8 teams), but I would have taken Gibson as G from Anaheim instead of Fleury and then swapped out Karlsson for Rakell and picked Marchessault instead of Neal. Then if I were Gallant I would have tried to play Marchessault and Karlsson together with one of the defensemen (of which I don't have too much of a problem with for the Pacific Division, especially given you had to take a Coyote and Ekman-Larsson is definitely the best viable option there).

Which would mean the no-Cup goals leader and the no-Cup wins leader (either Luongo or, more likely, Henrik) would have been active for roughly the same span.

Yeah, its weird. Either they wanted the prospect bad enough to not care about assuming salary or/and they think they can re-flip Panik at a deadline. Or Duclair is a massive dick and it killed his value and you can't just release that talent so you send him to a roster with a rapist who will make Duclair look fine by comparison.

He was injured for most of this season, and looked a bit old and slow when he was healthy. Now that he's come off IR, they've been trying to trade him, because they liked the play of the young guys who took his place while he was out. Now that guys like Joakim Ryan and Tim Heed and Dylan Demelo are looking just as good as Martin, at a much cheaper price, the decision got easier.

Ironically, despite using all those inexperienced guys on defense, the Sharks are among the league leaders in GAA. Their problem is scoring enough goals.

Was very strange to read that earlier, and have to scroll and scroll to get to the Lightning.

That being said, 3-6 weeks without Hedman isn't going to be fun, even if our bye week and the All Star break happen to coincide with his time out.

Cogliano is suspended 2 games which ends his ironman streak at 830 games (the 4th longest in history).

I'm not sure about this, should a suspension end an ironman streak?

Ripken should have brought a bat out to shortstop with him when he was at like 2,120 games played and just swung it at anyone trying to get to third base.

I thought it is when your owner creates a power/lights problem when you hurt your back fighting Kevin Costner who was sleeping with your wife streak save is the Ripken approach.

Yeah but...
Boston is 8-0-2 in its last 10, and still has three games in hand on the first-place Lightning
I mean it's down to 2 games in hand now but the point still holds - if Boston wins those 2 games, they are firmly...still 5 points behind!

Vegas has a legit chance to win the Stanley Cup but at this point 90+ percent of the reason for that is Marc-Andre Fleury.
