Still, it looks like a nice return for Nash.
I can't make heads or tails of that. They gave up so much for that rental. They surely can't be thinking to sign him with their cap next year right?

I see it backwards unless you really love Spooner. You're acquiring Nash and shedding Belesky, so there are two gains there. Is pick 24-31 and a prospect who profiles as a 3rd pair (lefty) "defensive defenseman" really all that much to give up?

(Nash is, annoyingly stated, a guy you have to watch every game to appreciate. He's in no way worth his $7.8MM anymore and the statline isn't exciting, but he's the rare ex-superstar who still affects almost every game whether or not he scores. Still drives play, solid in all three zones, doesn't take games off. If he explodes in the playoffs, I wouldn't be shocked even a little. He's more than due.)

Tonight Ovie becomes the leader in games played for the Caps. He will overtake Calle Johansson with game number 984 tonight in Columbus. So he should hit the 1000 game mark this season. Here is a more interesting Ovie fact. In his career (13 years) he has missed 29 games, and 12 of them weren’t due to injury.

He is also 4 goals shy of 600 for his career.

He's had an amazing career. He's approaching best left winger ever status.

Vegas added Tatar from Detroit right at the deadline. Not sure what the cost was so I'll withhold any enthusiasm until I hear but that was about the type of deal I expected them to make.

Yeah, that's a little steep but Tatar is under contract for three more full seasons at a not ridiculous cap number. His style of play should fit pretty decent with VGK too. Don't love it, don't hate it.

They completely whiffed on getting the kind of high-level prospect (or player) you need to get for McDonagh, let alone McDonagh and Miller.

Yea, Nemestnikov makes that deal look pretty OK if you're going to dump high level talent.

E. Kane goes to California, where surely he won't find any trouble.

I don't know much about McDonah or Miller.

Gonna really miss Vladdy. He was probably going to demand more than the Bolts were willing to pay this offseason, due to his time with Kuch and Stamkos. BoltsProspects.com has both Hajek and Howden ranked very high in our system. Also, apparently the borough of Manhattan's hockey fans all going to that site at once have made it sloooooooooooooooooooow.

Howden is our #2 prospect, behind Cal Foote, and Hajek is #11.

Howden - "Maintenance free ... offensively skilled and defensively responsible. His attention to detail is meticulous." -- Lightning Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray (via Tampa Bay Times)

“He’s got size, has got a chance to play in all areas, good defensive centerman, play on the power play, kill penalties, really good hockey sense. We feel really good about getting him where we picked.” -- Lightning GM Steve Yzerman

“He’s a complete player. He’s got offensive upside but also understands his responsibilities in the defensive end. He’s a big guy, strong, works hard down low, kill’s penalties, he does it all. He’s a very smart player. Brett competes hard and I think the only thing he needs to work on is that he’d like to generate more offence. But, he’s still a young player and those opportunities will come. There’s no glaring weaknesses in Brett’s game. He just has to work on the fundamentals on and off the ice as any young player does. It’s difficult to compare some of these young players to some current NHL players but he has the upside of a Ryan Kesler. We’ll find out in about 10 years.” -- Moose Jaw GM Alan Millar

"The younger brother of NHL prospect Quinton Howden, Brett is clearly cut from the same cloth. Like his older brother, Brett is tall and lanky and benefits from a strong elongated straight-ahead skating stride. He doesn't shy away from contact and isn't afraid to go to the dirty areas of the ice. Finally, perhaps most excitingly, Howden is a fantastic two-way player who proved extremely valuable to his club in all three zones and in all situations. Despite looking a bit underdeveloped in terms of lower-body strength, Howden's first-step explosiveness is definitely above-average. He wins the majority of his short-area races through a combination of size, speed, and superior body positioning along the boards. When left in open space, meanwhile, Brett hoists a really underrated wristshot that is both decently powerful and very accurate. He has a good shooting repertoire as he has a good slapshot, too, and is capable of making some outstanding deflections and providing screens in front of the opposition goaltender. His stickhandling through small areas is yet another underrated quality to his game. Able to play at all three forward positions, Howden looks most natural playing at centre. He's very good in the faceoff circle, using his size to gain leverage and his strength to overpower opponents in the dots. His playmaking off of the rush could be better, as he has a tendency to dish the puck off to teammates in lowpercentage areas instead of taking advantage of his excellent wristshot. Adding muscle to a lanky frame and becoming more selfish with the puck are two areas of improvement, but otherwise, this is a very complete
prospect." -- HockeyProspect.com's Black Book

"Big immoveable force dominates contested areas and is disruptive all game below the goal line, wearing down opposition. Understands the key to success is to use size to his advantage across the full ice sheet. Majority of his production comes from cleaning up garbage around crease - plants big frame in front for screens and deflections. Uses vision to locate the puck in heavy traffic, protecting it with his wide stance and long wingspan. Surprising acceleration for his size - can beat defenders off the rush. Extremely mature; leads by example every time he steps on ice with high-end character. Dramatic improvement on defensive zone commitment this year - tracks opposition well without the puck. Offensive creativity is fairly limited, must find ways to help generate more scoring. Tends to stop moving feet without the puck. Safe bet to play in NHL, the question is how much he will score." -- Red Line Report

"A top name in prospect circles for a number of years, Brett is nearly a carbon copy of his older brother, Quinton, a first round pick of the Florida Panthers (2010) who played in 58 games for the club in 2015-16. Howden skates very well and displays an easy stride and great first step. He is a competitive, two-way forward who hustles for pucks every shift. With his size, character and hockey IQ, Howden is a very good defensive forward who has been leaned on by Moose Jaw to play critical defensive minutes. He's not a lights-out scorer, but he has some scoring tools. He'll show solid vision and shooting skills, though his hands and creativity aren't the best. He likely won't be a primary puck carrier on the power play as a pro, as he'll get more of his offense from being the main guy to gain the zone and win battles." -- Corey Pronman, ESPN

Strengths:
Owns a projectable 6-2 frame and plenty of two-way ability. Works very hard when on the ice and is a great competitor. Displays some leadership qualities, as well. Is also versatile.

Weaknesses:
The jury is still out on his long-range production numbers at the National Hockey League level, as he may be limited to third line forward duties. Needs to shoot the puck more and finish opportunities.

Projection:
Sound, versatile, No. 2 two-way center who can play in all game situations.

Hajek - "He’s a bigger body, a very solid two-way player ... Libor Hajek was a 'safer bet' to be able to adapt both offensively and defensively to NHL than DeAngelo ... You watch Libor Hajek play on a really weak Saskatoon team and he just plays as hard as he can every shift all night long and his coach, who has just left the team to take an assistant position in Buffalo, couldn't say enough good things about him through the course of the year. On a weak team, he showed up and competed hard against the best players in the league every night when he could have folded his tent." - Lightning Director of Amateur Scouting Al Murray

"In his first season in the WHL Libor was a bright spot in a rather disappointing season for the young Saskatoon
Blades. Libor stands out as a strong, smooth skating defenseman who impacts the game on both sides of the puck. He he has very good acceleration and can explode off a stand-still. His first couple steps are very good as is his edge control and this allows him to have great escape ability in his own end as well to be a threat offensively as he can get up ice and join the rush. Hajek can also surprise with a move in the offensive zone where his quick feet allow him to quickly gain some space forward and try to make a play with the puck on his stick before the defense sets up into position again. Hajek is capable of getting his shots on the net but isn’t a big threat there, his mobility and offense that springs from transition is more impressive than his offense from the point.

"Hajek is a strong player that has great balance and agility and uses this to win puck battles along the wall, although he still needs to add some polish to his physicality as he can be prone to chasing the play a bit and losing his positioning in the process. Hajek is a strong defenseman in transition as he uses his size and skating to keep opponents to outside. He can also be the defenseman that recovers in time if his team turns the puck over in a dangerous position. Hajek is very hard to beat one on one and is very steady on odd man opportunities. If the forward dumps the puck past him, he also has the skating ability and size to win the race, get it back under control and start the transition the other way.

"Libor needs to work on being more consistent from shift to shift if he is going to make the jump to the next level. We found that at times he would get caught chasing the play. He projects as a mobile two-way defenseman with size that will probably lean more towards the defensive side of it at the pro-level. That said, Hajek not only already is more than a defensive defenseman, he also has enough offensive tools to develop the offensive part of his game further as he moves forward." -- HockeyProspect.com's Black Book

"He has a chance to be a first rounder. He really impressed me with his feet. This kid is mobile." - HP Scout Mark Edwards

"Powerful, athletic frame produces a strong stride with great pop off his edges and fantastic lateral agility. Also gives him leverage on hits, and he’s able to knock opponents off the puck easily. Frequently catches opposing players with their heads down in open ice. Spins off checks in own zone to prevent getting taken out of the play. Uses forceful physical game to contain defensively. Started the season off constantly pinching aggressively and forcing the play, but began playing more conservatively in second half; still trying to find the right balance as he learns nuances of smaller ice. Outstanding footwork makes him hard to beat 1-on-1. Accurate breakout passer hits targets in motion. Feet are always in rhythm with hands when carrying the puck. Playing on a weak, lifeless club has hampered his extroverted style - seemed to get discouraged and showed growing pains adjusting."

Projection: Dependable #4 defensive rearguard.
Style compares to: Niklas Hjalmarsson
-- Red Line Report

"Hajek has been a top prospect for a few years. He was one of the top 16-year-old players in recent memory to be a regular in the top Czech league, and he was one of Saskatoon's best players this season. Hajek is a fantastic skater, one of the very best in this draft class. He closes his gaps well on his checks, evades pressure and is a threat offensively by
activating off the point or jumping into the rush. He moves the puck efficiently, shows some creativity on the power
play and is a steady positional player. He is also able to defend his off-wing very effectively. Hajek's hands aren't great,
but his IQ lets him get his points, as he opens lanes so well with timing, patience and skating ability. Hajek has some
room on his frame to bulk up, and he shows the intangibles to battle for pucks and throw his weight around." -- Corey Pronman, ESPN

Strengths:
Owns a very projectable frame (6-2) and has great mobility. He can play a strong, shutdown role with some physicality. Has the raw tools to produce points, but hasn't been able to showcase that side of his game with much success so far.

Weaknesses:
Must fill out his frame in order to maximize output at the NHL level. Must add offense to be a formidable top-4 defenseman who can play more than a shut-down role.

Projection:
Quality top-4, 2-way defenseman.

Evander Kane? His coming to the Sharks surprised me. But he might be a good fit. The Sharks are a loose group and that might be what he needs. Gave up a good prospect in O’Regan, and two conditional picks. Wish I knew the details on those picks.

Wysh is neither a prospect guy nor objective about NY area teams.

I don't at all get attaching Miller here, especially since the stated fear is "he's a 24 year old RFA wing who is going to get paid". How does flipping that for a 25 year old RFA wing who is going to get paid help?

Stevie Y wants you to feel better, Mr. D!

Re the Kane trade, after consideration, I think it looks pretty good for the Sharks, especially compared to what Boston gave up for Nash. Buffalo receives a prospect, and the "conditional" 2019 1st rounder is only a 1st if the Sharks re-sign the pending ufa Kane. If they don't sign him, it's a 2nd round pick in 2019.
