Ouch. It’s funny because it’s true. I’m starting to think there’s like 6 good GMs and a bunch of clowns.

Not the NHL, but still crazy.

Remember this is a domestic flight. I don't want to hear NFL players complaining about four hour flights from east coast to west coast.

Big statement game by the Bolts last night. Odds are they still finish behind Boston in the standings, but they had to have that kind of effort, after sleepwalking through the past 4 months or so.

That battle between STL and Colorado for the last spot in the West is so close that when they play Saturday night it might come down to a team having to win in OT vs. in a SO, so we could see the rare example of Colorado having to pull their GK during the 3 on 3 OT.

(That would happen I believe if STL wins in a SO tonight against Chicago, they would be 1 point up on Colorado but with the same number of ROW wins. So if the Colo-STL game goes into OT, the only way Colorado can win a tie-breaker against STL is to get the 2 points to make the total number of points even but with 1 extra ROW wins since STL would win the H2H tiebreaker otherwise.)

Yes and if the Blues win tonight then tomorrow Colorado has to win in regulation. The reverse if the Blues get no points tonight.

Right, so even more possible is the still uncommon "pulling the keeper in a tie game in regulation". I've seen that before in Game 82, but never a team having to pull the goalie in OT to make sure they win before OT is over.

Yes and in overtime, when do you pull the goalie to make it 4 on 3? 1 minute and a half left? 2 minutes? earlier? Because 3-on-3 the Blues can play keep away for a long time you may never get it back in time to pull the goalie! It would be interesting that's for sure.

The Sabres do have the best odds to win the lottery to draft Rasmus Dahlin 1st overall in the July draft. But, if Chicago, Montreal, New York or Detroit wins the lottery, I will believe a fix was in.

Yeah I mentioned this on Facebook, but the cheers were louder for the nurses and doctors and EMTs and cops than they were for the players (excepting maybe Neal and Fleury).

It goes without saying that it sucks that they had to do it, especially for the first game in franchise history, but it really was a perfect way to handle honoring the victims and trying to acknowledge the way the community came together. And then to just destroy the Coyotes for the first 10 minutes and go up 4-0 was such a release.

Despite my joking to the contrary, no one really expects this team to make the playoffs so I looked at it as the team having two playoffs games this year -- the season opener on Friday and last night so it was a relief and a joy to win them both.
This turned out to be a really bad take.

Nonlinear FC wrote: Tue Nov 07, 2017 2:44 pm Yeah, but it's not just Oshie that was going to kill this team. They had way too many guys that were coming up on needing to get paid.

And there were a couple of guys they cut loose that I think were undervalued by the GM. Schultz is the main guy I'm thinking of there. But there's a really good argument that losing Marcus Johansen and keeping Kuznetsov is going to be a move regretted down the line.
From November.

Oh boy. I mean, I stand by the overall comment, and part of what was going on, if I recall is that Kuznetsov didn't have a great start?

Also, not like they had much choice on Schmidt regardless (who also doesn't score many goals to begin with being a defenseman and all). I'm pretty sure they'd gladly take the $2.25M cap hit to have him back.
This was also right when Tampa and VGK met... Lots of good discussion / analysis before and after on this thread.

Gotta say, I've been reading a lot lately (and in years past)... We do a pretty decent job breaking this shit down. Just some kudos to the Swamp.

Nonlinear FC wrote: Wed Dec 20, 2017 2:32 pm Speaking of the Caps, I'm happy to have been proven wrong about all my doom and gloom. I mean, they were hot garbage to start the season, but you look up and they are in sole possession of 1st in the Metro.

I realize they had a lot of turnover and it was always going to take some time to gel and sort out lines and such. I just didn't think that the talent assembled in the bottom 6 was going to provide enough support for what was always going to be a very solid top 2 lines. Holtby also had a very rough start to the season.

And they just Burakovsky back last night after an extended injury absence, he promptly scores the game opener and game winner. The fact that they were able to make up ground without that dude in the lineup is huge. He is supposed to take the role occupied by Johansson (traded to NJ), who quietly was a pretty significant part of last year's team.
Nonlinear FC wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2018 3:49 pm Jay Beagle was on local sports this morning. Had good things to say about Vegas, but also mentioned he wants see them again. He was doing the whole "we don't make excuses, but..." They were on the third game of a road trip, and coming off an OT loss to the Yotes the night before.

And he copped to the fact that they just beat the Devils in the same scenario (flipped.)

But 3-0 is 3-0. I think people, including players, are having a very tough time wrapping their head around the idea of an expansion team being this good.

All I can really go by, in terms of not being shocked, is that they grabbed probably the perfect guy for this scenario in Schmidt. Not a huge salary cap #, plays balls out every night (pretty much), under the radar nationally, but loved by the fans (and hockey insiders) because he plays above expectations, great team guy. If GMGM replicated that type of formula throughout the roster...
brian wrote: Tue Jan 02, 2018 6:01 pm I think the one thing you can really appreciate if you watch them every night is that there are basically no times when they're not forechecking, attacking offensively, blocking shots, battling for loose pucks, etc. and that's been difficult for some teams. It's not the best analogy but it's like those old Arkansas basketball teams of the 90s with 40 Minutes Of Hell. They don't brand it that way, but basically the idea is 60 Minutes Of Hell. Not with physicality necessarily, but just in terms of overall team philosophy.

I think realistically they're not as good as their record, but they're a LOT better than most people seem to believe even still. This is probably about the 8th to 10th or so best team in the NHL and that's not something some people want to hear. It's a testament to the job McPhee, Gallant and the scouts, etc. did in putting the team together. They've over-performed in overtime and/or 1-goal games, but that's about the only place where the results in the standings don't match up with the stats or advanced stats. (Knock their results in 1-goal games and overtime games back to league average, and they're still probably about 8th to 10th in points per game)*.

I find it kind of interesting that there's been some backlash in some corners of the media as far as the expansion draft rules being stacked in Vegas' favor, but at the time the draft was done and the Knights had dealt Methot and some of the other guys they drafted expressly to flip, NO ONE was suggesting that this team was going to be anything other than horrible. The best case scenarios from people who know hockey had them scuffling for one of the wild card spots in the standings.

If you honestly asked any NHL GM if they would consent to getting a do-over and getting to build their team the same way Vegas had to (forget that it's obviously impossible), you could count on one hand the number of teams that would go for it. Maybe none. Remember, they'd have to get rid of all of their already drafted players still in the juniors, the AHL, etc.

* - This is where I also point out if they had a healthy Fleury and Subban for the entire season they arguably have two or three more wins than they already do.
This led to an extended analysis/discussion on VGK and the backlash.

That ironically has arguably fucked VGK more than any other team in the playoffs so far. (With the caveat that it ended up not mattering in the conference semi-final and I don't think it would have mattered very much in Game 1 of the West Finals even if they had called it consistently and overturned the third WPG goal.)

Let’s also remember that nowadays Yandle is basically a PP specialist who only averages 15 minutes on ice a game. Pretty much all top-four, and some bottom-two defensemen average 20 minutes per game.
