By far my favorite Yankee loss of all-time. Knocks the Red Sox out of the playoffs minutes into the day my 1st kid was born.

Was at a concert at a local small venue and everyone was craning their necks back to the TV behind the bar to keep track of this. I seem to remember the band getting kinda pissed about so many fans being distracted. Can't remember the band, but I think they had a female lead singer. Gonna see if I can figure out who it was.

There's rampant speculation among Cubs Twitter that the Cubs are working on a trade with the Orioles to get Machado, and the Cubs would trade Javier Baez or Addison Russell as part of such a deal. Both of those guys have several years of team control left, while Machado only has one year.

Most of the folks on Twitter are aghast that the Cubs would consider such a trade, especially if it includes Baez.

Am I crazy to think the Cubs should jump at the chance to trade Baez for one year of Machado? I love watching Baez play; he brings such joy to the game. But still, he has a terrible eye, is basically a league-average hitter, and while he makes a lot of flashy plays, the metrics I've seen don't seem to like him all that much as a shortstop.

I think Russell has a higher upside than Baez, but still, I'd probably be willing to see the Cubs trade Russell, too - even though he's the guy whose jersey I bought when I finally voided my "don't get personalized jerseys" rule.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

You sprint to do either trade. Machado is a top ~7 position player.

That's my thought. But then I noticed that he seemed to have a down year last season. Do you think that's anything to be concerned about, or just random variance?

I’m not at all objective when it comes to Machado but (so?) I wouldn’t be worried.

I mean, it is an even year so it's time for the Giants to win a World Series.

Somebody retired earlier this year and basically alluded to the fact he was going to get in his boat and go chase the southern cross. Or rather, that was the gist of it.

Milwaukee seems to me like they will be pretty good - and they will have fun with rivalry games against the Cards and Cubs.

So Machado is going to get his wish this coming season to play SS for the Orioles, which of course (I knew) they'd accommodate his request in order to drive up their asking price at next season's trade deadline.

Beckham will presumably slot over to 3B...

I imagine this is a farwell to SS of sorts knowing that Gregorius has it locked down for his future team.

Not to mention continuing to sell gear with the logo in Ohio for forever basically. The Indians and MLB managed to fuck up what should have been a easy PR win.

This is the dumbest pace of play idea ever.

Extra inning games aren't the biggest issue. They could easily trim five minutes from games between easy changes to the time between pitching changes and limiting visits to the mound. Honestly, in this day and age we could probably treat a visit to the mound like a timeout in hockey. You get one a game and after you use it, it's gone. (This would mean the manager wouldn't have to walk out to the mound for a pitching change which would also save time.)

The more I think about it, how ridiculous is it to make an old man walk 40 yards just to make a substitution? Can you imagine that shit in basketball?

Exactly.

However - Did you read the article that compared the game times from a 1984 blowout to one from this year? I can find the link. The real problem seems to be the length of time between pitches. Do you consider a pitch clock to be fucking with the game? Because I can't see any other way to address that, other than things like limiting pitching changes (so pitchers have to go longer and thus throw less hard) - which would also fuck with the game.

I don't, but given how pitchers, relievers especially, are max-effort at all times now I see the risks there. A better PA gets heavy tradeoff or fights it altogether.

I don't want them to have to limit pitching changes I just think visits to the mound are unnecessary.

Like I said if you want to get the gang together for a minute, then you get one timeout a game and you can get together on the mound for 45 seconds or whatever, but that's it. If you want to make any pitching changes after that it has to be done immediately after an AB and done from the dugout.

I'd go for this, but only if the trade-off is that hockey coaches have to shuffle over to the crease to change goalies (and point to the backup goalie, and hold the puck and rub it for a while he gets there)
