Am I imagining that Brainbo suggested she had some sort of relationship with a married SC anchor and that he was a best guess, if not ever verified?

She mentioned she was with a certain then (still?) USA TODAY writer for sure. Not sure I remember a SC anchor though.

this is troubling to me. solid female candidate backs out of Kansas race because of 2005/6 lawsuit. She was the HR director and fired this guy, he claims it was because he refused her advances. That's pretty thin to be disqualifying people almost a year before the primary.

Down goes Rich Rod

As reported by our own Bronto...

Arizona has fired Rich Rodriguez.

The school announced the decision Tuesday night, shortly after reports of his possible firing were floated. According to USA Today, the school was “weighing” the possibility of firing Rodriguez, in part because of a harassment complaint against him.

According to the Arizona Daily Star, a “multi-million dollar” notice of claim against Rodriguez alleging a hostile work environment was filed Thursday.

That's not reporting -- that's taking other people's reporting and putting it up on a website. That's fine and all - it's just basically a fancy blog, which obviously serves a purpose, but it's not reporting.

Yeah, I tend to click through to the actual reporting when I see stories like that. No offense to whoever is posting the repackaged version, but there are usually more details and quotes and stuff in the reported piece.

You guys are ignoring all context. DiS isn't a fucking news anchor, he's providing information in an informal setting. I guess I'm in the minority among those who have weighed in on the subject, but I didn't read his post as crediting bronto with breaking the story.

For whatever it's worth, I wasn't accusing Dave of saying Bronto broke the story, but I do and did feel that it's important to make a distinction between a story where you can actually get the details and context like you could with the Arizona Daily News and USA Today in this case as opposed to a blurb on some kind of news aggregator.

This isn't the best example, but assume that the Boston Globe does a huge piece about the Patriots being complicit in child sex trafficking and Deadspin does an article linking to it, saying in effect -- Holy shit, the Patriots are actually literally trafficking in 15-year-old Thai girls -- the relevant article to link to if we're going to discuss that here would be the Boston Globe's article, not the article on Deadspin.

Not exactly in those words, but again -- I think the relevant link would be to the main news story, not the news story about the news story.

I get this might be a personal thing, but the secondary story pointing out the real story in the context of trying to share information here seems pointless to me.

I don't disagree, especially if there's a unique take or angle to it. Just don't call it "reporting". That word has a specific journalistic connotation to it. I realize I am being pedantic, but it does bother me some.

Yeah, it's a little pedantic, but... One of the things that almost ruined newspapers was the loosey-goosey approach they took to giving all their content away for free. Looking back, I get that was the culture of the new medium, but they took way too long to pivot.

Point is, as we all know, page views matter. One of the reasons I click through isn't just about getting a deeper dive, it's paying off the originator of the article.

I mean, I appreciate when Buzzfeed or Deadspin or whoever truly does an aggregation piece... Taking a multi-day approach, with a bunch of articles on the topic. Or even aggregating a one-day story with multiple angles. And I don't have a big issue with bronto's piece, it's part of the landscape these days.
