De-platforming people works. Trump booted from Twitter. Milo Yiannopoulos. And so on.

If you don't give them oxygen, they go away.
Conversely, Milo's career imploded because of shit he said on Rogan's podcast. Giving a guy like Milo 7 minutes in a forced, staged interview or talking head piece on a 24 hour news network, it's letting him troll his message, and lets be real, Milo was a troll who probably didn't believe much of what he said. Making him humanized, you see he is a broken bitter man and I think he is much less appealing to people who loved the flamboyant flamethrowing troll who was a caricature of a Conservative hero. Give people enough rope and they hang themselves. Nobody listened to Alex Jones on Rogan and came away a fan or started listening to his show. If you are prone to be a fan of his, you already knew who he was. I came away less angry, as I used to think Jones was intentionally stoking conspiracies to make money and destroying society in his wake, but I came away realizing he is legitimately mentally ill and actually believes his fever dream conspiracies.

I don't for a second believe that appearances on Rogan's show don't lead to new followers for everyone who shows up. And Milo crashed because he got kicked off twitter and facebook.

If that was Rogan's goal, I'd be right there with you Syb. Still doesn't change the fact that a white male multi-millionaire with a huge deal with Spotify to produce his podcasts is a fucking cunt for whining about white guys not being able to talk. Fuck him.

Has anyone made it through the new 5+ (!!!!) hour long episode of Hardcore History?

I've been listening in parts for the last few days, and I still have 90 minutes left! (FDR just died).

20 minutes in, and I’m enjoying it. I like listening to comedians talking about their process and what it’s like playing a theater for the first time (congrats, that’s awesome!). Only critique, it’d be nice to hear an intro, know whose voice is whose and some background on the guest. If you are making it for friends and locals you don’t need that, but if you are going to knock Rogan out of the #1 spot it’d help.

I'm struggling a bit with the feel, between trying to get people as relaxed and informal as possible so the conversation is better and producing a formal show. I probably overshot it here but I feel like trying to talk out an introduction is going to be boring and akward. Basically i don't know what I'm doing but I'll work on it and try to figure out a way to do that that doesn't suck

Yes, an intro would be nice. Who is Tommy Drake? What's he known for, what's he been in? Where's he from? How did he start? "Tommy Drake joined me one afternoon and he started talking about nude scenes..." which segues into the conversation. It's less than a minute.

That said, I wouldn't worry about it too much right now. You can always go back and add an intro. Most podcasts that become successful, they end up going back to redo some of their older episodes for consistency, whether it is episode numbers, intros, advertisers or audio quality. Because when people discover a podcast they will go back to Episode 1 and the podcaster doesn't want a huge difference between Episode 1 and Episode 50.

I really enjoyed the first episode. People love behind the scenes, 'inside baseball' when it comes to the entertainment industry. Why does it take hours to shoot a five minute scene? How much does a comic need to drink before performing in front of a group of accountants?

I haven't listened, but from what I've read in the thread, an alternate opening that still keeps an overall casual feel that may appeal is this:

Set a timer for a short amount of time, say two minutes, and after that time comes, the first natural break in the conversation after that is when you do a quick intro: Hey, this is Ben Daniel, you're listening to "title", my guest today is "whoever"... and you quickly go right into the next point/question to pick up the conversation where it paused.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through and I've had a few laugh out loud moments. Good conversation, I also enjoy the behind the scene stuff of comedy and comedians. Good job.

As far as an intro goes, if all of your future guests are people who you are friendly with, maybe a 1-2 minute background into how you know them, an anecdote of something you've experienced together, what they mean to you in a personal/comedy sense. The part of your podcast where you thanked this guy for what he means to you was a nice moment and I think it would be a good open so people can now why he's on your podcast. You can always revisit it and expand on it.

Also, was there a 3rd person in the booth? Maybe some intros of yourself and whoever is co-hosting?

I was going to comment that your cohost barely spoke. I thought it was really good, didn't sound like a first episode at all. I think you played a perfect balance of letting your guest speak and avoiding the temptation to throw in a joke or drive the conversation. He was very entertaining, and letting him go was the right call. You had some good questions and topics ready to go when the guest wrapped his stories, and set him up with another interesting topic to discuss. Again, I really enjoy the inside discussions, so you asking for advice was interesting to me, and I'm sure very useful to you. I thought all your comments and stories were good, I really can't criticize a single thing. Great job, I'll definitely continue to listen.

ETA: I was going to say I like the name, but I see Apple Podcast has at least 9 podcasts with the identical name, and a "Being Blunt," Let's Get Blunt," and "Let Me be Blunt."

I listened to episode 2 and 3 and thought they were both really good. I think the 15-30 second intro is perfect to announce who guest is without wasting any time, and you jump right into the conversation. Both guests were interesting and funny. With Jamal, you started to go into references about mutual friends, but it was always quick enough that it wasn't boring or annoying.

Same comment as from episode 1, you do a fantastic job of letting your guest take the spotlight and tell stories without stepping on them and sprinkling in some funny comments. You have great timing on when to jump in with a question to steer the conversation and lead the guest into another story. I would imagine it's really difficult not to jump in with jokes or try to be funny, but all 3 guests have been great, and you gave them the space to do their thing.

Setting aside the content quality of that podcast, Dan Le Batard/Meadowlark Media got $50 million to start and when they start expanding beyond podcasts into other media (documentaries, etc.), those media will get their money from elsewhere. So, while their development arm, etc. is coming out of that start-up money, most of that money is going toward podcasts.
