Just got into a new one today: Dead Pilot's Society.

Very good premise: Each episode, they bring in quality actors to do a table read of a pilot that got all the way through development (paid for a script, then months and months of "notes" from studio/network people) only to not get past the approval process where they do a read and shoot the actual pilot.

The first two, one was by one of the co-hosts who did 7 years as a writer on Friends, and his pilot was basically Frankie & Gracie, but written for Molly Shannon and Lisa Kudrow (husbands cheat on wives with each other). Very funny. The other was about the burgeoning Stag Film industry, set in 20s LA. Written by those two guys on Reno 911 who are pretty prolific with pitching scripts.

My only quibble so far is that at least the first two it's almost 30 minutes of interviewing the writers, which really is excessive. I think they probably will alter this approach going forward, it's a bit too much background and exposition on a pilot that literally no one has ever seen or even heard of...

I'll tell you what, the LA-based one... I would absolutely think that show would be a hit these days. Only reason it didn't get onto F/X is that the executive that loved it moved onto Fox-proper, and apparently once the exec leaves, your pilot is DOA.

The live 'All Fantasy Everything' taping was pretty fun. Even the GF, who was skeptical about the whole premise, enjoyed it. It did help that that the guest drafter was a woman (Erin Ingle, local comic), who also had probably the funniest pick.

The topic: 'Excuses for getting out of plans with someone'. Her 3rd pick was 'I just saw a murder'.

One note: Both Karmel and Gborie are BIG DUDES...

They are both on the far side of 3 bills, easily...

"Reply All" just had an episode about the unconscionable sleaziness that has made the people at Intuit very wealthy.

As an outsider, the effects of unfettered capitalism on parts of the American way of life can still astound me.

The best true crime podcast I've come across is Small Town Dicks. It features the detectives that were involved in the cases, and has extensive interview and scene recordings. It is very good.

And its narrated by Lisa Simpson.

Yeah, I'm getting to the point where just ruefully shake my head at stories like this. I love this country, I really do. But we are very fucked up in ways many people just don't understand, at times, want to understand. It's the willful ignorance. The fact that the legislation making it illegal for the govt to offer a free tax filing service breezed through a Democratic house says a lot. An awful lot.

Listening to season 2 of In The Dark about the Curtis Flowers case and the sheer level of racism and fuckery is infuriating.

I listened to both episodes today and cannot recommend The Dollop's episodes 300A and 300B enough. Recorded in November 2017, the subject is Donald Trump. Not even close to being a complete record at that time, but a long profile of the terribleness of him (about three hours and 20 minutes between the two episodes - they read ads before starting the first episode, so you can skip those and trim a few minutes).

Fascinating stuff on so many of them. I feel bad my brain wants me to listen to the oldest ones and work my way forward, as it has me 80+ shows behind. My next work trip may have me able to see a live podcast in San Jose in September. Based on Dave's penchant for picking live show topics based on where they are recording (Bush in Houston, McCain in Phoenix), I am hoping the subject is Kamala Harris because he will go hard at her.

Saw Gareth Reynolds do stand up here in January. He made a joke to preface that he was going to get into some Trump material and, based in the reaction from the crowd, elected to move on. Good times.

Great interview and stories with DMC on Your Mom’s House recently. The first half is their same old shtick, but the interview with DMC was really good.

I’m only 2 episodes in and never realized what a huge, smarmy, racist, philandering cheapskate asshole this guy was.

I finished the Sterling series late last week. The story that Olden Polynice describes is utterly creepy and stomach-turning.

agree. I am a big fan of Wondery's podcasts (business wars, sports wars, etc). Having them combined with the Athletic has been strong.

It was so great hearing Artie sound so healthy, happy and full of life. I've heard Artie talk about being sober and loving it at least a dozen times, and never believed it. This time, in saying he was trying to stay sober but can't make a promise, I actually think he might make it.

It's probably only interesting for me, but there's a new podcast about the idiocy that was the Rob Ford years here in Toronto.

Episode 1 was excellent. The rise of a bullshitting populist with skeletons bursting out of his closet. Sadly, sounds familiar...
