Zardes is a hammerboot. He's fine against Minnows, but useless against Hex-caliber opponents.

And just to keep the line of thought going, it's the Zardes/Wondo/Plug in above average MLS FWD that get named to these squads that are (to me) a real waste of an opportunity.

Zardes is not gonna be the answer at a WC. He just isn't. So put young guys that have a ton of potential on this roster. It's the fucking Gold Cup, who gives a shit. I mean, it's decent level of competition, but it's a place to take shots on young guys and see what they can do.

Exactly! I'd much rather give kids opportunities than trot out experienced guys we absolutely know will never be good enough to play against good competition. One thing I will say for Zardes' recent performances, he has added holdup play and distribution to his game, but I doubt he can do that against good competition.

What about Bradley? Does he have a role or does his presence prevent the next generation from really taking over the squad?

Bradley provides something for this tournament, when shit gets real, in terms of solidity in the midfield. Berhalter needs results, and if Trapp can't cut it, he can lean on Bradley when it matters. I'm not expert enough on the young guys to know if any of them are capable of being the rock needed in the middle. Is Durkin ready? I don't know, honestly.

I'm still OK with Bradley being included, as he brings leadership qualities, and I think it's important having veterans that set the tone in camp.

“We have to remember that he’s 19 years old and he has a bright future in front of him,” Berhalter said of Sargent. “When I talked to him and gave him the news, one thing I mentioned was that he’s going to be the striker for the national team in the future. We’re sure of that.”

If im Sargent, the takeaway is that my coach is a world class bullshitter.

I feel like a good way to avoiding fucking up as a coach would be to actively avoid favoring veterans just because its easier to favor veterans. All sports.

I didn't watch the Jamaica game, but I really can't get too worked up about a 1-0 loss in a friendly. Can't muster up a great deal of ire about the Sargent drop either. Sure it's dumb to not have him on the U-20s if you're going to cut him from the Gold Cup roster, but once he's in the full squad training, it'd also be dumb to keep him over someone else performing better.

Just my $.02.

I said this earlier this year, there's not a lot of point in getting worked up about most of what happens this far out from Qualification.

But there's a pattern with US coaches who rely on vets due to job security, which is a short-sighted approach. I'm not frothing at the mouth upset about Sargent, it's just annoying/frustrating. I don't really care if Zardes is tearing it up at camp, we've seen his ceiling and he's been found wanting.

The Jamaica game, we were playing a B team roster in a weird formation (3 in the back.) I stopped watching because it just seemed like a disjointed mess and wasn't really predictive of what the squad will look like when shots are fired in a week.

But who tells somebody he's the future and cuts him. Isn't it more like youre not good enough and need to get better. I like your talent but a lot can happen over the "future" so train hard and come back stronger. Why would you tell the media you said that if you didn't. Been on the job 6 months but knows what the future holds? The guy doesn't even have enough confidence in his job to play the guys he needs to play to keep it.

Well, I confess to being frothed, and it is for the above. Zardes can be the new Wondo, and Berhalter can hump MLS vets who suck on the biggest stage because it makes him comfortable rather than actually trying to develop talent because that's just the US way. But, hey, Zardes' cement touch will be fine against some minnows, so, awesome. Best get some of that before giving Sargent run this summer. For fuckssake.

Soccer By Ives had an article on the Sarge decision. Basically Gregg said the lack of playing time showed during training. He was behind Jozy and GZ. He was probably going to make it before Sebastian L got hurt. That changed up the roster a bit. Also said they wanted to give Soto a shot at the U20s so it made sense to bring Sarge to the full camp as he had a shot to make the team.

There's no amount of reasoning and rationalization that is going to convince me Zardes is better than Sargent. Not now, not last week, and certainly not going forward.

I also really don't like that we are fucking around with Wil Trapp. I just don't think that guy is very good.

Sargent got 10 appearances in the Bundesliga this past season, and got 2 goals!

Mind you, he did get 12 appearances in the Regionalliga Nord (German 4th tier) and scored 7 goals.

ETA - for Bremen he was
subbed on in 75th minute - got a goal on his first touch of the game (fastest goal by a debutant in club history)
subbed on in 83rd minute
unused sub

subbed on in 80th minute

started and was first sub off in 61st minute

I really don't get the Trapp love. He is a serviceable player against minnows, but why bring in older guys with a low ceiling? [I thought Trapp was older than 26, but my point still stands.] Absolute best case scenario, he manages not to hit the wall before the next World Cup, then retires after the Cup. I refuse to believe we don't have players with a bigger upside. I really don't watch much MLS at all; do these guys look great in MLS and create a bias that they are much better than they really are?

Trapp isn’t really holding anyone back as far as I can see. Durkin is a little too young and he hasn’t exactly been great in Poland (hope that changes today). I guess the better question is why does the national team have to replicate the system of the club that’s been about the 5th or 6th best in MLS over the last few years.

Group for a U-23 camp in Utah. No Sarge for this one either...but not surprised as they are likely giving him a rest and risk he is not released for qualification. Zelalem, Trusty Lennon, Little Reyna, Glad, and Herrera. No Jonathan Klinsmann.

GOALKEEPERS: JT Marcinkowski (San Jose Earthquakes; Alamo, Calif.), Andrew Thomas (Stanford University; London, England), Justin Vom Steeg (LA Galaxy; Santa Barbara, Calif.)

DEFENDERS: Marco Farfan (Portland Timbers; Gresham, Ore.), Justen Glad (Real Salt Lake; Tucson, Ariz.), Aaron Herrera (Real Salt Lake; Las Cruces, N.M.), Jack Maher (Indiana University; Caseyville, Ill.), Sam Rogers (Seattle Sounders FC; Seattle, Wash.), Auston Trusty (Philadelphia Union; Media, Pa.)

MIDFIELDERS: Brenden Aaronson (Philadelphia Union; Medford, N.J.), George Acosta (Unattached; Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Mukwelle Akale (Villarreal CF B; Minneapolis, Minn.), Cameron Lindley (Memphis 901 FC; Carmel, Ind.), Sebastian Saucedo (Real Salt Lake; Park City, Utah), Eryk Williamson (Portland Timbers; Alexandria, Va.), Jackson Yueill (San Jose Earthquakes; Bloomington, Minn.), Gedion Zelalem (Sporting Kansas City; Berlin, Germany)

FORWARDS: Brooks Lennon (Real Salt Lake; Paradise Valley, Ariz.), Benji Michel (Orlando City SC; Orlando, Fla.), Alfonso Ocampo Chavez (Seattle Sounders FC; Kent, Wash.), Giovanni Reyna (Unattached; Bedford, N.Y.)

The US should be prioritizing the Olympics over everything else right now to the extent it is possible to do so given the rules on releasing players. As bad as things are at the senior level, the pool of players available for Tokyo figures to be very strong and they won't be encumbered by a continental tournament like half the field.

The biggest challenge in qualifying is that the tournament is smack in the MLS regular season finale/playoffs. So while there are plenty of eligible players who are starting and playing well for good MLS teams--which is what you want--they likely won't get to play. Another way in which the compressed MLS schedule is Bad and a Problem.

If the US does qualify, the biggest challenge might be finding 3 guys born before 1997 that add any value.

Here’s a fun activity. Who in the US player pool, born before January 1, 1995, would you invite to Qatar in the unlikely event that the US qualifies for the 2022WC? Use this for reference on birth dates: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_ ... occer_team

Brooks and Yedlin (both 1993) are obvious yeses based on body of work and that they will be 29 when the World Cup is played. There will probably be a pre-1995 goalkeeper, perhaps some approaching middle age Voltron of Hamid/Johnson/Miller. After that, who do you have? My third choice is Jozy Fucking Altidore. That’s how bad the Lost Generation problem is. That even if the US somehow qualifies for Qatar, there will be practically nobody in the physical peak years that is even worth putting on the field. Here’s my shortlist:

Brooks
Yedlin
————
Altidore
————
Lletget
Morris
Zimmerman
Lima
———-
Garza with robotic legs
———-
Saief
Holmes
My man Nagbe
Bradley
———-
Trapp

Here’s my list from the same age group for France:

Pogba
Griezmann
Varane
Umtiti
Sissoko
Lloris
Kante
Lacazette
Digne
Benjamin Mendy
Sidibe
Some fuck I’m not even thinking of
Sakho
Zouma

Comparable.

Wait, we're going to struggle to qualify now? Because we had two shitty Friendly matches in the run-up to a third tier (well, to be fair, Oceania is horrid and in a possible 4th tier all by itself) confederation tournament in an off-year?

I went on a very long, very detailed rant about the Lost Generation and how it cost us qualifying last round. At this point, though, the young guys that are coming up but were way too young for the last cycle are going to need to flesh out the roster. Not having a bunch of late 20s and early 30s players shouldn't preclude us from qualifying for Qatar by any stretch.

This, however, is why I (and others) have been bitching about the Gold Cup roster. Where possible, bring in the guys you're going to need THREE YEARS from now. Get those guys blooded in a tournament, but one that really doesn't fucking matter. Especially now that they've disbanded/shutdown the Confederation's Cup. I mean, honestly, the GC is a pretty useless tournament. Use it wisely. If the powers that be won't give Berhalter the room he needs, if he makes the right case, then that's gonna be put back on them. In this country, the ONLY thing that matters to the general public and media is how we do in the WC. This should be a 3.5 year build up. Not something that we "really" focus on in terms of the player pool 3 months prior to WCQ. This is the short-sighted bullshit that caused the Lost Generation in the first place.

Not a single comment after the 6-0 revenge match over T&T? Sure, T&T looked really weak, but I'll take it. Pulisic looks sharp and hungry, Boyd is a threat against minnows, and I'm not overly excited, but hey, maybe he can be dangerous against good teams too?

I'm convinced they discovered Aaron Long smoking behind a high school in 1986, wearing a Metallica t-shirt.

Paul Arriola and Pulisic are the straws that stir the US offense. It used to be Bradley, but now it is them on the wings. Zardes, Altidore, Morris, Sarge, etc. are useless if those 2 are not getting the ball forward, making dangerous runs, and hitting crosses.
