I saw the whole "the Giants should release (an asset) out of respect" line of reasoning the other day but it was seemingly debunked by someone pointing out he'd be subject to waivers and end up in an even shittier spot.

Right. Releasing him actually helps the Giants and hurts Eli.

Unless I'm mistaken, if he's released and claimed, then the whomever claims him has to absorb 100 percent of his contract and the cap hit. This is obviously a HUGE benefit to the Giants and means he has no control over where he goes.

I had thought because of that it would be unlikely that he would be claimed on waivers, but his deal isn't really too bad. I'm not a capologist, but looks like something in the ballpark of $22M a year. That's a lot, but not undoable for a QB-needy team with cap room (also the deal only runs through 2019 season so essentially it's only a two-year commitment. Would be perfect for a team like Jacksonville or even Denver.

I would think hurts him and the Giants and helps whoever the claiming team is. Aren't QBs, even ones on the downslide, like insanely valuable?

Am I missing something, or did the Eli release news just come from a fake Adam Schefter Twitter account?

There's been mainstream mention of it, but more in the theoretical sense. I don't know if I've seen a sourced report that Eli has actually requested his release, but even if he has it's doubtful the Giants would do it during the season. Not sure it makes sense for either party (as Mr. D noted). Though it probably DOES make more sense for the Giants than Eli.

Very difficult for a team to fit that in this year when they didn't plan for it. Denver would have to cut a lot of people. Was a big stumbling block for a Romo trade since you can't arrange the contract per your cap schedule.

Jacksonville could do it easily, though. As far as I knew they only had to take the base salary (about $10.6 mil) but it might be different for players picked up on waivers mid-season.

Shocking (or maybe not...) stat of the day - in the period since he became the Pats, Bellichick has more wins in Buffalo than any Bills coach.

Gearing up for the game - my daughter is a huge Pats fan - all over new england at -9.

This could go in a few different threads, but the Silverdome implosion didn't work, which I'm sure Lions fans will have fun interpreting as a symbol/omen of things.

Insane sequence near the end of the Jets/Chiefs game. Jets had first and goal at the 5. Three plays go nowhere, but Chiefs penalized for personal foul on FG kick, so first and goal again. Two running plays, then defensive holding on 3rd down so 1st down again. Then a couple more runs and they finally score on 3rd down (10th goal-to-goal play). Go for two - defensive holding again. Marcus Peters chucks the flag into the stands and stomps off the field to the lockers - even though he’s not ejected! Jets get two-pointer on retry. Later Peters comes back to sideline, with no socks on.

Robbie Gould kicking five field goals to beat Chicago, 15-14, seems completely appropriate. Even moreso when one of the Bears' touchdowns was on a punt return.

Hopefully the pre-game rumors about Fox getting fired within 24 hours of the game if they lost come true.

If this Giants season has taught me one thing, it is how hard it is to lose a lot of games in the NFL, and how little we appreciate the Browns for their mastery of the craft.

When he came back, it looked like he was pleading with a fan to return his socks. Fucking bizarre. After they marched Peters to the locker room, the ref announced the penalties. I said to my son it was weird he didn't announce the ejection. That was one of the most bizarre sequences I've ever seen. All the while, I wasn't sure if I wanted the Jets to win, or root for a better draft pick. I guess ending the season on a total collapse would destroy morale, so maybe winning is good.

My favorite part of that sequence was the Jewish kids in their yarmulkes waving the flag as everyone in their section leaned in to take selfies.

There are some guys who you just know you'll never see HC-ing in the NFL again.

To that list, you can obviously add McAdoo.
