So who is on your potential list for FC Cinn?
DeLeon, Mattocks (won't be on DC next year anyway), Stieber
Parkhurst from Atlanta seems like a good one..but Atlanta wants to resign him
Dykstra
Seitz for the goal? But feels like you can get a decent goalie without spending much or using a pick
Jakovic
Powers, Kljestan or Spector (feels like Orlando needs to restart and these guys would benefit from a change in location)

Parkhurst can opt for FA I believe if he were selected, so I don't think they will look that way. Not sure on goalie, they've already bought Richey from Vancouver (he was previously on loan).

MLS free agency is a goofy thing. I never know if they are full FA, rights maintained because of a legit offer, the two phase waiver thing. In past drafts i know strategies were to pick guys that teams still wanted and then negotiate for TAM, DP, international roster slots, etc. I guess with only 5 picks that is not a great way to build the roster unless you have the player you are grabbing from another league locked down.

That's a nice pickup. Good LBs are hard to find in this country, and Garza is national team quality when he's healthy.

Also, that means it's Bello Time, so a win for the USA as well.

They also picked up Kendall Watson in a trade last night - sending $825K in allocation money and a 2019 international spot to Vancouver.

I have not followed enough MLS to form a real informed opinion, but it feels like the roster they are putting together with the pick-ups last year, the holdovers, and the expansion players should at least be able to tread water next year.

I'm dumb so I don't know the term, but I bet the name "Kendall Watson" is one of those phrases that sounds very good to the human ear.

I think because it puts one in mind of Kendall Jackson - and that's wine.

The biggest key to a decent first year of play, IMHO, is not having Josh Saunders in goal.

Well you hope they have a better start that Minnesota. With that being said, Atlanta did everything so right on nearly every front (Have to give Blank, Tata, and Boca tons of credit) that they bar will be very high.

Yeah been a fair amount of chatter amongst the local youth teams about Bello. Would be nice to see a kid coming up through the true local clubs get time with the champs. Makes everyone believe.

New playoff format in 2019
All games between the two international breaks (last game->International Break->Playoffs->International Break)
Single Elimination (no two legs) with higher seed hosting
14 of 24 make the playoff with conference winners getting a first round bye

I don't like this, but I guess it's good that the playoffs will end about a month earlier.

Other than the 7 teams, I think it's fine. It's a little irritating that Seattle can suck until July every year and still make the playoffs. Then again, they did it again this year and managed to finish second, so tweaking the playoff format isn't going to fix that.

Brek Shea to Atlanta. Montreal would not pick up his option. Atlanta got him on FA deal. His career has just flamed out.

I quite clearly defer to all of you who are longer term observers of MLS but I’ve been intrigued by the FC Cinn approach to building the roster. They’ve been working really hard on the defense, which is probably a good place to focus for an expansion franchise. I hope.

By the way, the first two MLS games for Cincinnati are at Seattle and at Atlanta. That’s a stout first two games.

Don't know about starting a team from the back or not, but
FC Cinn is taking some criticism from Brian Strauss of SI for using a symbol on the badge that is a Christian symbol. Apparently the knife wielding winged lion is a symbol of St. Mark. The club may have referenced this at some point. Strauss (Jewish) questioned it and you can imagine the uproar from the internet at Strauss. Well early stories indicated that no events would be held on Sunday at the new stadium (but apparently soccer games can be played).

The Cincy Enquirer posted those stories and then posted an immediate retraction and apology for getting it wrong. I don’t understand the won’t play on Sunday rumors - they’ve played on Sunday in USL and the bengals and reds play on sundays. I think Strauss is way off base, so i would guess the twitter responders have been mad at him. Cincinnati has a large Jewish population (my mom taught at one of the Jewish schools in Avondale during my growing up years) and I would be hella surprised if that was intentional overt Christian imagery . They’ve had the lion and sword since they started, and the current crest is meant to highlight Cincinnati (seven hills etc in lion’s mane). But, dunno, I guess.

Here was what the Club’s official release said when the crest was announced:

Shame on people for thinking that FCC was trying to make a theological statement when the real truth is much darker, that the crest was developed by a couple of branding consultants in a boardroom.

DC going internet for local TV rights. Not a fan of this. I am fan and like turning on the DC games with my kids...but not sure I am paying for FloTV or FloFC or such.

Would be an improvement for NYCFC versus a 4:00 match being shown on TV at 8:00 because it conflicted with Yankees post-game.

It's definitely the future...I don't think it will be controversial in 5-10 years. But it seems like they did it a bit too soon, and with the wrong partner. That all probably raised the price, of course.

Exactly, I like DC but don't have any interest in DCUnited content outside of the game (I am not clamoring for BeIN Sports-like programming...BarcaTV anyone?). One of the big problems with DC's TV coverage was where they spent and did not spend. Great on air talent but terrible sideline reporting (Not a Lindsey Simpson fan and sad she got hit in the head with a railing but did not miss her TV work). Not sure you even need sideline reporting. But the camera work and angles are critical for watchable soccer. A Pro game can't look like a one or two camera high school event. For some reason that is how most of these games get covered.

If DC can figure out how to bundle the local rights into the MLS TV package or an ESPN+, I may be interested. Too many teams are trying to figure out how to milk another buck from what I am willing to spend on sports broadcasts. The fragmentation makes it not worth buying any of them. Sports was always viewed as a promotion vehicle to other programming. Are any of these new folks making money? BR Live with CL coverage? NBC Sports Gold? ESPN+, BTN Plus?

MLS officially announces Austin expansion.

Also Ian Harkes off to Dundee is Scotland, 3rd place in the 2nd division. His grandfather was born in Dundee and a supporter of the club. Just could not find pt in DC's roster after they opened up Audi field. Apparently he had some interest from other MLS sides. Hope he finds his form.
