If you don't like Soft Bulletin, then chances are you're not going to like anything of theirs from the past 20 years. Prior to Soft Bulletin they were further out there with stuff like Clouds Taste Metallic or Transmissions from the Satellite Heart. Honestly, I could take or leave them until Soft Bulletin. I loved that disc, and also Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and also At War with the Mystics. Then they went out of phase on me again and I lost 'em. With Wayne Coyne, it's kinda like SETI. Tune in once in a while to see if he's sending an appreciable signal back.

I was going to try to fill in some chronological gaps, maybe pick an album for HS rass, one for college rass, or post-college/pre-kids rass, but BSF really messed that up and made me sad with his Guster selection (at least he picked the album I would have picked, though I don't so much get the Evermotion hate given Keep It Together is where their sound really changed).

But I'll try to stick with the plan and go with a holdover for HS rass:

Going to sound like a rock critic for a moment here...

Lou Reed was both great, and overrated. He created some great music, some really good albums (and two of the best live albums ever) as well as a lot of unlistenable stuff. His problem was that as a true artist, he would let his demons overwhelm his music with the result being a bunch of sloppy and uneven records and some that are so grim as to be unlistenable.

But in 1984, he was in a good mood (for him) and put out an album that I love to this day.

I could sing this entire album. Even when Lou is singing about hitting someone in a jealous rage, the music on this album makes it into a catchy song.

And there's this bouncy classic...

Eve kissed Able, that's how he got murdered by Cain
Abraham gave up his son, to keep his wife away
And even the Lord almighty, speaking from the trenches to the pits

I want to keep things rolling here (and adding this back in after removing it - even if giff's pick deserves an investigation), so I'll go with an album that is on my list because it has what is one of my most favorite songs (title/lead track) instead of trying to figure out what else I could have missed (as was the case with Faith).

I’ve been a fan of these guys for years. Theirs is a spirituality that doesn’t dominate the sound, which is clutch if you want me to listen to it for more than 3 seconds.

Pretty sure I read that Morrison’s presence allowed for Cale’s and Reed’s egos to coexist. Cale was the artsy freak, and Lou Reed was too-cool-for-school rock and roll.
