Duke is generally annoying but don't affect me in any way, kind of like Syracuse as long as Boeheim is there. Villanova is a direct dislike. I can't wait for Jay Wright to leave so I can like him and they can suck more.

I sort of agree with this. I still root against Duke out of longstanding habit but they’re not as irritating now that everyone realizes that they’re just another mega-program that chases the best 5-Star talent, and not some college basketball City on the Hill. If not for Grayson Allen, this current team wouldn’t really have anyone to hate.

I’m on the verge of elimination from a pool because my very Catholic mother followed up her successful prediction of 11-seed Xavier to make the Elite Eight in 2017 with a prediction of 11-seed Loyola to make the Elite Eight this year. Michigan better duplicate tonight’s effort against Gonzaga or I will be officially excommunicated from contention.

Holy fucking shit. I said before the game that the matchup will go one way or the other in a big way. If TA&M could use their size and slow the game down a bit, they would roll. If MI could get any kind of shooting rhythm and tempo, they would roll. If they had shot just moderately OK against Houston, that was a double digit win.

But 10 3's in the first half? I mean, yes, MI is capable of torching it. But after last weekend?

Look out if they have re-found their BTT groove. This team is a buzz saw if they hit 3's at even a moderate clip.

Ref show early in this one. Some very minimal touch fouls being called.

Fouls called on Kentucky are maybe a little worse but it’s been bad both ways. You just can’t expect guys to play inside without there being contact.

Just caught up on this thread. I winced going into the UMBC time, because I knew what was coming. I didn't expect three more pages of meta discussion about my reaction to the game and the other thread for me. FWIW, I didn't open the Swamp at all until probably Sunday, and that was probably habit more than anything. I saw the thread with my name on it, but didn't click until later in the day.

Am I a pussy for not diving right into this one? Maybe. But frankly, I have almost no interest in the opinions of most people about why UVA lost and whether or not it proves that Tony Bennett is an idiot with a system that can never win tournament games.

That Loyola-Nevada game tonight was fun and a great match of styles.

It was weird seeing Nevada being disadvantaged by having fouls to give because they needed to put someone on the line with 3 seconds left

Kansas State are playing 5 guards because their 3 bigs have fouled out. Will be interesting if it goes to OT.

A #3, 2 #9's and a #11 seed in the left side of the bracket. This year it has been true madness.

Basketball is simple. Ten men at a time play hard chasing a ball for seven months and in the end Duke wins.

Florida State was pretty mediocre all year, and then legit crap at the end of the year. This tournament makes no sense.

That whole side of the bracket is like a PSA for the downsides to single-elimination. Everyone likes upsets until we end up with a Kansas State-Florida State national semifinal. Combined 19-17 conference record for those two Elite Eight teams.

Kentucky was nowhere near championship level all season, so while the draw opening up gave me some hope that loss didn't bother me as much as when they've lost with stronger teams. But man, that was a textbook example of how overactive officials can ruin a basketball game. Both teams in foul trouble (K-State even more so) and there were a number of questionable to awful foul calls. I mean, this was called a shooting foul:

K-State also got 2 free throws in the final 2 minutes of the game out of this being called a foul on Diallo (#3) for UK:

I know the whistles were terrible both ways but that's 4 phantom points in what was ultimately a 1-possession game.

Respectfully, one of the teams on that side of the bracket is holding up the argument many (homers, to be sure) were making that MI was the toughest 3 seed in the field.

I guess I'll take the fingernails being ripped off in Wichita if we get what showed up in LA last night. MI has now won 12 in a row.

Last weekend they shot 13-46 behind the arc.
Last night they shot 14-24. They made 10 3pters in the first half and the game was pretty much over.

Now playing an FSU team playing with house money. Very athletic, looks like they've figured out their D at the right time. Still, remarkable to have avoided UNC and Gonzaga for a shot at the F4.

Even Michigan, who I agree is the best remaining team on that side, was dead to rights against Houston had Houston made its FTs late.

That whole side of the bracket has been wiped out. One of these four teams will play in the national title game. Number in parens is the "overall" seed by the selection committee.

Michigan (#11)
Kansas State (#34)
