So my dad was walking in Cambridge to a talk he was giving and came across him and his aid. Apparently is chair power was out and she was having problems pushing the chair up the incline of a bridge. My dad pushed. He asked if my dad was a "Yank".

I also feel asleep in the movie theater when my dad took/made me go see "A brief history of time".

I admired his courage in the face of A.L.S.Truly remarkable.

But I have no idea about the ideas that originally made him famous. I was working at a bookstore when "A Short History of Time" came out and it was a big seller... and I swear to God I tried to read it a couple of times, but my brain just doesn't work that way. it was like looking at hieroglyphics.

Yes. Mention those two things when Hawking comes up and you're golden.

Same. I consider myself a pretty smart dude, but physics or anything even close to like it (trigonometry, etc.) is an absolute complete mystery to me. Couldn't even really understand much of the basics of it.

More than the middle class, the real dwindling population that's fucking everything is people who are smart enough to know what they aren't smart enough to know. Being dumb about _______ is fine (assuming its not like "medicine" and you're a doctor) as long as you stay away from any debate or, in the case of the current admin, shaping of legislation.

I tried listening to the book on tape, and gave up. I made more headway, and eventually gave up on NdT's book about astrophysics for the novice. Easier to follow, but I just couldn't make myself care about topics like how to measure the distances between stars.

I’ll admit I’m just a college dropout radio guy, okay? I’m not a professional physicist. I’m not a professional scientist. I do not own a lab coat, white or light blue. So they tell me that the Big Bang is where everything began. Hawking says it’s the Big Bang and we’re still expanding.

Okay, the Big Bang. There was this whatever-size — call it a golf ball-, tennis ball-size of matter that banged and we’re all here. Where was it? Where was this glob of matter that banged that created the universe? Where was it? No, no, no. You can’t say, “It was in the void.” You can’t say it was in another dimension, parallel or otherwise, astral plane. It had to be somewhere. Where was it? What was around it? Could you see it? Could somebody see this golf-ball-size bit of energy if they were not part of that? Could you be somewhere and see it? Could you be somewhere and witness this Big Bang instead of being a part of it? If so, where were you? Well, since nobody could see it, how the hell do they know it really happened? But I’m not supposed to ask that.

Of course by this logic, I suppose Rush must have seen Jesus rise from the dead.

So people much smarter and more educated than you have empirical evidence and repeatable experiments that show something exists, but since you don't understand it, it's ridiculous to believe it. But we must believe things with absolutely no evidence, "because God doesn't want us to know..." is a perfectly logical conclusion.

In 1979 Stephen Hawking was named the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge - a post once held by Sir Isaac Newton and it should be noted also by Nobel Prize winner Paul Dirac perhaps the most underappreciated genius of the 20th century
