Come now. This was fairly clearly a matter of an off-color comment. That is a bloody world apart from the Mavs situation, which was effectively somewhere between sexual harassment and sexual assault. A careless comment certainly does not imply a progression to that, and there is no basis for suggesting so.

I originally read this as sarcastically suggesting that the firing of Ussery was an overreaction. On re-reading, I now think Gunpowder is suggesting that if everyone reacted to every questionable comment, as I sort of suggested (though *that* was of course a slight hyperbole), then Ussery would have been gone long before that. Which, fair point.

And no, I'm not an idiot. But thanks for totally not being a prick about it or anything. ;-)

The "referred to a player by the nickname "Spider Monkey" because he makes faces while working out, but the player said he had never heard of that as his nickname part" seemed like such a genius cover move.

Bless You Boys (the very good SB Nation Tigers blog) had a post with around 330 comments by 10am Eastern this morning. For some reason, their site won't load now...

The clubhouse attendant is the son of a high school friend of mine. I’m glad he was fired and there was no half assed suspension instead. That kid loves his job more than life and this broke him.

A 214 ERA+ and no HR allowed through 23 1/3 IP. Impressive. Though his FIP is 3.48, and the 3.9 BB/9 and 4.6 K/9 are fairly alarming, so there's probably more than a bit of smoke and mirrors there...

He has three pinch hit home runs for the Reds this year. Actually, it's 3 pinch hit home runs in his last 4 plate appearances, broken up by a walk.

He was a CF in college, and raked there. He's a legit threat with the bat.

It's an added bonus to have basically a free pinch hitter on days you know he isn't going to pitch (or even to use him as a pitcher when the spot is coming up soon, I guess.)

I will never understand why he wasn't converted to a position player at some point. He was a well below average pitcher (91 ERA+, 4.95 FIP), who showed pretty good potential as a hitter in admittedly limited PA (106 career OPS+)...

IIRC, the Reds wanted him to switch to become a full-time OF but he wanted to pitch.

He's still a well above-average hitter with an OBP 150 points above his BA, so it's far from time to panic, but Harper certainly isn't doing himself many favors in his walk year...

Short of getting injured or punching a kid, don't think it will matter as far as his FA deal. Elite players just don't come onto the FA market in their age 26 season.

I bet that 10 to 15 years ago, that .216 AVG would have. But I agree, front office types nowadays are much too smart to over-emphasize one year, or to care about AVG. :)

The IsoP and OBP are still quite fine, so I'm certainly not worried about his long-term performance.
