Gabe Kapler’s first three games as a manager have been super not great.

I largely agree with Kapler’s quick hook philosophy as a postseason strategy, but it sure seems like a good way to destroy your bullpen over the course of a 162 game regular season.

I mean, yeah. It’s still a 162 game season right? And that’s not even getting into him mistakenly calling into the game yesterday a guy who wasn’t warming up.

Yeah, I don’t mind cycling relievers, especially early in the season when you’re not sure what you have, but you can’t have a guy throw three straight and you sure as fuck can’t forget to get someone warm. Ump did the right thing but there should be some sort of punishment there.

Well, after winning two 1-0 games, the clock turned midnight and Cinderella's dress turned back into rags. In the 3rd and 4th games of the season, the Giants were outscored 14-0. The big offseason acquisitions, Mccutchen, Jackson and Longoria are a combined 2-for-43 at bat.

Going to be a long season in Pittsburgh.
Taillon throwing a gem, 9 strikeouts over 5 and 1/3. First hint of trouble with a 5-1 lead he gets lifted. 3 pitchers later, it's still the 6th inning.

If you don't want teams bunting then don't shift the defense when up by 7

Or ever, really. If teams are going to shift, then they have to be prepared for teams to bunt against it in EVERY situation, no matter what the score.

A real man would bunt directly into the shift and dare them to throw him out.

I'm 100% in on Deadspin's take. The shift is a tactic used to increase the likelihood of an out. So you are trying to gain an advantage. So did the batter. Fuck those hosers.

Yeah, I'll listen to arguments against bunting (even against a shift in play) in the 9th inning of a no-hitter. I won't consider any argument against bunting against a shift any other time/situation than that basically. The batter isn't obligated to make the pitcher/defense's job easier.

I don't think the # of hits (or lack thereof) matter at all. If the defense is giving away the left side of the infield? Sounds like a great way to break up a no hitter to me.

I'm not sure the unwritten rules of baseball could frown past the idiocy of a defensive alignment that gives hits away in the face of a no hitter.

Yeah, I'm not going to argue that point just saying that as dumb as most of the "unwritten" rules of baseball are -- that one I somewhat get. I also think it's different (in the no-hitter situation) if it is a 1-0 game in the 9th vs. 10-0 as well.

If it's a one-hitter and you're complaining about guys bunting no matter what the score is then just fuck right off.

Sure, but that's not quite the same thing as taking away half the field by stacking your position players on the preponderant side of the diamond though. To that I say, just bunt a hole through their misapplied logic. Cuz those unwritten rules weren't assumed when shifts were used the way they are today.

Yeah, fuck that shit. You want to shift that dramatically and leave me an entire side of the infield?

Fuck. You.

Not all unwritten rules in sports are bad... and when you get into sports etiquette at the youth level (boy, do I have stories) it's downright necessary to have unwritten rules.

But, I loved playing and used to love watching baseball... This type of stuff is just the worst. STFU, Twins. Insufferable pricks. Take your veteran leadership comment and shove it.

Ohtani just hit a 3 run bomb. Would have been a grand slam if not for a wild pitch that preceded it.

He drifts forward big time which is fine if he can maintain a contact rate and possibly fatal for that side of the ball if they find a hole.

So...looks a lot like ichiros swing no? So that’s maybe a product of the system. So Ichiro with more power and less speed probably is a good player, right? And he won’t be a 350 hitter most likely.

I mean, if you can hit .290 with 18-20 homers and also throw 130+ innings...

Yes ... but Ichiro is like top 5(?) hand-eye, pure hitter of the past ~50 years. His movement wasn't a positive, he was just able to negate it or make it part of the process by being an insane talent. I'm super curious to see Ohtani the first time he faces a 93+ left who has something that breaks away as well, because that certainly looks like it would kill him.

Sure. But he doesn’t have to be ichiro as a hitter (a first ballot HOf) to be a plus player.

No, but I think there’s an all-or-nothing risk there. He can be really, really good if he’s anywhere near Ichiro or he can be a quad-A slugger who can destroy the mistakes from pitchers who can otherwise beat him most of the time.
