Gulp.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I'm not much of a Rockies fan, as they were born after I left Colorado. But, I do actively root against the Dodgers, so GO Rockies!

Heh. I was living in SLC when the Rockies were born, and they were on the radio here. So I have some connection. And now with my son out there, I really want to see the Rockies make the playoffs against the Cubs. (So, of course, they get swept by LA.)

I too am rooting for the Rockies but pretty much only because that would keep the Cardinals out of the playoffs most likely.

The Cleveland Indians and Tampa Bay Rays share the same record (85-66). One team is 17.5 games out of 1st, and the other has their division all wrapped up (14.5 game lead).

Oh and Cleveland is three games under .500 against the 25 other teams not residing in the dumpster fire American League Central Division. They're nine games under .500 against teams with a winning record, too.

By Pythagorean records, Washington has the top Wild-Card spot and is only a game behind Atlanta for the division lead.

By the same token, Houston pissed away HFA by underperforming to their pythag to the tune of 7 games, whereas Boston has outperformed their own by 6 games.

They have? One really bad team (the O's) skews the numbers. Otherwise you're left telling the crowd that the Angels and Athletics are harder to beat than the Red Sox and Yankees.

Seriously. Horrible take. (o;

Why do you compare the Angels and Athletics instead of the Astros and Athletics? The numbers don't lie. You don't get to exclude the Orioles. That's an opportunity for lots of wins that teams in other divisions don't get. As he said, the AL West has a better aggregate winning percentage than the AL East.

Oh man, the Cardinals are probably going to lose this game to the Brewers because they just had a pinch runner trip over his own feet halfway between third and home. He would have otherwise scored easily to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th.

I think deGrom locked up the Cy Young last night but I’m really curious how he does in the MVP voting. It’s hard to dispute that he’s been the best player in the NL this year and in every respect other than W/L record his numbers stack up very favorably to other pitchers who have won the MVP.

I'd have Yelich but that's only because I kinda think the Cy should be the pitching MVP.

I agree that Yelich will win and is a worthy winner. I honestly don’t understand how his WAR isn’t a bit higher than it is (6.9 for fWAR; 7.0 bWAR). But deGrom has had a historically great season.

Its his defensive grades. His unadjusted wOBA is elite given his player type (31st over the last decade), but a combination of being in LF and being there next to Lorenzo Cain is suppressing his overall WAR. Some day that'll all get worked out.

(By statcast catch probability which grades attempts rather than zoning, he's +4. Cain is +16 which is 4th overall.)

Not saying this to ding Yelich at all, but a major factor for the voters is that he's been kicking ass near the end of the season. Too many voters feel that team wins later in the year carry more weight than those in April, even if a win is a win, and teams who make a playoff push or players who kick ass in August and September get that (undeserved in my eyes) extra push. E.G. Caminiti in '96, Morneau in '06 (he was only the 3rd best guy on his own team that year), and Rollins in '07.

I think the Brewers are smart to go with a bullpen game today, assuming that’s what they end up doing. It probably gives them their best shot to win today and sets them up well for the NLDS if they win today. Even if they play the bullpen game and lose, they can roll Chacin against the West WC’s 5th starter tomorrow.

Ty Cobb was an asshole, but man was he a dominant player. I recently re-read The Glory of Their Times (great book), and all his contemporaries were in awe of him.
