Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I know Mesoraco has some injury history, but I don't love this deal for Harvey, especially when the Reds agreed to pay Mesoraco's salary while the mets continued to pay Harveys. Mesoraco makes $8 million more this year.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
They need an arm, any arm, to try and take some innings and keep them from rushing another not-ready kid to the majors. Harvey probably isn't gonna be able to do that, but since Mesoroco was getting paid anyway, it's a free flier to try and find innings. It's not like, at 9-27, they really have anything else to lose. If it it blows up, which it probably will, it literally doesn't matter.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I like the move. Its net neutral cost but there's a far greater chance they can figure something out with Harvey and get some deadline value. Worst case is you get some amazing crossover story involving the cops and the Bengals.

Just like Joey Votto, Ichiro is a national treasure.
Dammit, why are all of our national treasures from other countries?

Should have added "longer" in there.
This sucks. I still love Robbie and now it'll be used to keep him out of the Hall after he crosses 3,000.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Nah. Once Ortiz gets in, then you'll see less and less resistance to PED users being admitted. I mean, ultimately they'll just build a wing for the freaks who used the stuff and Clemens and Bonds will get in, too.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
But Ortiz was never suspended which means we have to disregard all knowledge of failed survey tests and his previous semi-admissions and all that. He's super clean.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I haven't really been following MLB that closely aside from checking scores and whatnot, but WTF happened to the Orioles? Weren't they challenging for the ALE just a few years ago?

Derek Lowe inducted to Red Sox Hall of Fame. Still mediocre?

He's joining a group that includes Marty Barrett and Rick Burleson. That hardly wipes away the mediocre label by itself.

Pretty surprised to see the A's over .500. I thought they were supposed to be Reds-bad. Are they still Moneyballing there?

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
The A's are playing a bunch of really young guys, and some of them seem to be blossoming. They have a few older guys who are quality too.

What's bad about it? That it just barely cleared the fence? Honest question.Ryan wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:06 am The Jake Lamb HR in this clip is one of the worst homers I've ever seen.

Yeah, not a Boston dig, but looks like every opposite-field HR at Fenway that scoots by the Pesky pole. (And there are several other stadiums where similar unimpressive opposite-field HRs are hit, especially Yankee Stadium as well.)Johnny Carwash wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 10:52 amWhat's bad about it? Also, if we're talking unimpressive HRs, especially given the stakes, nothing will ever "top" McGwire's 62nd.

Yup.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
I don't know guys, I just watched it once and it looked like a double-down-the-line swing* and then it landed in the front row of a launching pad ballpark. I know Fenway is full of them.
*Actually it looked like he somehow caught the ball and then threw it backhand very far in superspeed.

It's either him or Severino, but I agree with the notion that he's much more likely to have a great career in pinstripes than say Aaron Judge, and far more likely than would Gary Sanchez.

Just realized Trout's contract only runs through 2020 (his age 28 season), so unless he gets injured or something weird happens that contract is going to be completely hilarious.

Re: 2018 MLB Week 1
Judge is five years older, so I'd probably bet on him, if only because he'd retire first. It's a danger projecting anyone's career based on a couple of seasons, of course, but that career 157 OPS+ is mighty impressive, though Torres' bat at 2B is awfully valuable as well.
Also, even as a Jays fan, I somehow find Judge very easy to root for. Much like early-career Derek Jeter, but whereas Jeter always struck me as a bit too polished in the media, Judge doesn't...
