I can't imagine Stralman gets suspended for the boarding. If they didn't suspend the guy for cross-checking to the head they won't suspend for that. I agree that boarding should be a 5 minute major. And, I also wish that any head shot would get an ejection.

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
What truly sucks is hockey has no idea how to do anything but follow. Football is more popular and more violent so they'll just sit and wait until football takes action and then they'll have to do the same. It would be so easy to clean up first; contact with the head is always the aggressor's fault, off-ice penalty review, far longer suspensions, etc, and then maaaaaaaybe you can gain some ground as the fast-and-tough sport if the NFL starts to eat it.

Not that complicated. There is no clean hit to the head.

No. The most important thing is tonight sets in motion the necessity that this be shown at least three more times this playoff season. VEGAS.

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
I've heard some rumors that the pre-game ceremony is going to be completely (more or less) redone for this series. They did have about 10 days to work on it, so who knows. All I know is it is going to be loud tonight.Rams Fanny wrote: ↑Wed May 16, 2018 12:52 pmNo. The most important thing is tonight sets in motion the necessity that this be shown at least three more times this playoff season. There’s just enough Jets fans here to set this place off tonight. I’m telling you it’s going to be loud on TV.
ETA: Unless they’re piping noise in here it’s gonna be crazy. The yelling from fans for pregame warmups was as loud as the full entrance for some regular season games.

This is the first ever day in NHL history where the only NHL game of the day is being played in Las Vegas, NV.

I’ve watched two angles over a dozen times and I don’t get how it rocked Neal like that. I don’t doubt it, but it looked completely innocuous.

MAF straight up won that game.

Yup. You need that sometimes in the playoffs.

Yup. No argument. Whatever his faults in the past you could make a case that MAF is the best goalie on the planet right now.

When they make the Final I’ve got to start wearing my MAF shirt (assuming I can find where I stashed it away after he lost his last start for Pittsburgh).
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
The books could get washed on this, huh? Between it being local and people probably buying some novelty first year tickets, I imagine there's a ton more money there than there was on most infinity-to-one longshots.
Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
Yeah, they've got some significant liability. Well into seven figures, but the books are basically just looking at it as a marketing expense and leaning into it at this point. (They've also reduced some of their liability since March by offering a prop bet where bettors can bet the Golden Knights to NOT win the Stanley Cup at a pretty favorable price. I've heard of some people holding fairly decent sized bets on Vegas at 150 to 1 or whatever and hedging some of it with that bet.)

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
Even knowing what I now know I still think any decent money on Vegas was stupid. This is legitimately the most confused I've ever been about a sports season.
Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
Well, by "decent sized" I mean the payouts, not the amount wagered. Most people bet about $10 at 150-1 or 200-1 as a souvenir but obviously that ticket is live now.

Are seven figure losses that big of a deal to the books? I mean, they add up, sure, but aren't most places just raking it in?

There's no way to know if the house usually wins. And I often wonder why Las Vegas looks the way it does.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu May 17, 2018 1:35 pm Are seven figure losses that big of a deal to the books? I mean, they add up, sure, but aren't most places just raking it in?

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
It's pretty significant, especially when you factor in it's a sport that usually doesn't produce major losses for the sportsbooks. The money lost on the Knights if they win the Cup (and really all season if you factor in that the betting public probably stuck it to the books all season adds up the amount of money they'd expect to win from the Super Bowl, which is basically the Black Friday for the sports betting industry.govmentchedda wrote: ↑Thu May 17, 2018 1:35 pm Are seven figure losses that big of a deal to the books? It'll eventually be made public because casinos in Nevada are required to produce all win/loss figures. In the past, hockey was so insignificant it was included in an accounting bucket called "other" but I'm thinking it might be broken out as its own sport like football, basketball, etc.

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
John Murray of the Westgate mentioned earlier this year on ESPN's betting podcast that the casino's have been getting dinged all season on Knights' games because lots of fans will stop and make smaller ($50-$200) bets on the way to the games and get "a free night out" when they win.brian wrote: ↑Thu May 17, 2018 1:42 pmIt's pretty significant, especially when you factor in it's a sport that usually doesn't produce major losses for the sportsbooks. And I would assume the champion prop bets are usually pretty big winners for the casinos.

That +310 ticket I have on the Lightning this series looks better & better.

SAME. I grabbed WSH before the series, and Bolts at +310, and am guaranteed $50 either way. Winning!

Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
Not only that but the kind of betting most of us can't fathom, which is why it looks the way it does. If I got hard for 3 nights in Vegas and don't win a dime, I might be out 1000-1500$. There are people in that city playing for twice that, per hand, at 50 hands per hour. And there's more of them than you think. And very few of them have ever been or will ever be "up".degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu May 17, 2018 2:24 pmI figured Vegas looks this way due to casino betting.A_B wrote: ↑Thu May 17, 2018 1:38 pmThere's no way to know if the house usually wins. Re: 2018 NHL Playoffs
So this expansion team is now in a place where the Toronto Maple Leafs have been once in the past 51 years. (One win away from the finals)
Unbelievable.
