Two teams dormie now. Begging VGK to close it out tomorrow. Game 6 back in Vegas would be no picnic for Winnipeg but still don’t want to have to sweat it and would save some money for finals tickets which promise to be insanely expensive.

I think MAF wins the Conn Smythe now even if they lose the final.

You don’t root for a team that gets an additional 1st if a quarter of their 2013-14 squad wins with Tampa.

Technically they were like 15-9-1 at one point and briefly dipped below the best winning percentage in pro sports history.

If you accept the conventional wisdom that the deal that brought Reaves to Vegas was just a throwaway deal to fuck the Jets out of Brassard in case the Knights happened to face the Jets in the conference finals and Reaves scores the conference winning goal I’m not sure I would bet against George McPhee in literally any endeavor.

Oh and I’m not so sure there was a lot of debate but unless VGK signs an aging veteran for a year in the next two or three years the first player to have worn a VGK jersey to be inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame is MAF. This season did for him what last MLB postseason did for Verlander. He’s a dead nuts lock now.

Legitimately scary thing for the rest of the league should be that this team was built to be a power in 2022 and even with not being able to flip Neal and Perron for picks very well still could be. Remember they had four of the top 34 picks last year and have 27 picks in the the next three drafts. The first sniff of salary cap issues probably don't come into play for at least four or five years. Even if they regress to league-average for a year or two after this season (perfectly reasonable assumption for many reasons) they could be back very, very soon towards the elite teams in the league and for awhile to boot.

ETA: And you can make a serious argument that Las Vegas will be the #1 destination for free agents going forward and everyone else is #2. If nothing else, on a tier with Nashville and Tampa.

I'm curious how a big free agent signing would affect Vegas. Say Tavares. It's no longer a team of equal parts.

Is this what you get when you have an entire team made up of players that their original teams deemed expendable and felt whats it's like to not be wanted.

No egos, no entitlement, nobody getting a long leash because they were the coaches or gms "guys". Just a bunch of talent that was lumped together because they weren't viewed as an important asset by the teams that they played for.

There's plenty of skill there for sure, but if hockey is 90% mental I think they found the right buttons to push. Does a big star screw this up?

I don't know that it's any different from the deadline deals they made or bringing in Carpenter off waivers in December from San Jose.

I don't think they'd make a run at a guy like Tavares, but they'll have to sign a couple of free agents at least -- almost every team does, even if it is just a guy who you're slotting into the third D pairing or whatever, but I don't think the makeup of team changes as long as you're still looking for guys who are hungry and who want to play a team game. So that's what I mean by being an attractive FA destination. Presumably McPhee might have a bunch of options for those kinds of guys to fill certain roles.

That was the real genius of McPhee and the pro scouts was finding guys with the right mentality to fit the culture they wanted. So presumably that's going to continue to be foremost in their minds. I think the real big question is how the makeup and mentality of the team changes when the draft picks start making the roster. That could happen as soon as next season as I suspect Cody Glass is probably too good for juniors at this point and they'll try to have him fill one of the spots left open by Neal and/or Perron walking.

What the hell was up with the Kucherov non-backcheck on DSP’s goal? That was horrific.

I mean, if you can't come out on home ice in a lose or go home game and put up maximum effort...

But, still, pretty impressive overall performance. Still, as with every game other than game 2 and game 5, a puck bounces a different way and we're having a very different conversation. Kucherov scores at the end of the 2nd and we're having a different discussion, for sure.

On Kucherov, they burned an entire segment showing his turnovers, bad decisions, and really lingered on that lack of effort on DSP's goal. He, apparently, doesn't like the physical, grind it out style. His body language was pretty bad all night. If I noticed it, when I'm really not paying that much attention, it was bad.

Going to be a war tomorrow.

Kuch's game is definitely hot and cold. For me, I'll take the good that happens more often than the bad. If he's on, it's magic, if he's off, it's horrendous and sloppy and lazy and...

I just watched the DSP goal 10 times, trying to understand how they waived off icing. Finally figured out what happened there was Coburn was forced to play it right before it got to the end line. For some reason, they kept saying Stephenson "negated the icing" and I was like... He was CLEARLY behind Coburn on that play.

But I also didn't hear anyone bringing it up as a controversy and it had me puzzled. I am now unpuzzled.

Quick hits on the last one.

- I'm hot and cold on the "taking the body" strategy, but damn did it seem to work in G6. The Caps were just crushing the Bolts on every damn shift. It was hard to watch at times. Tampa needs to figure out a way to move the puck quickly and beat them on the counter.

- Also in that vein, they let Ovi get away with MURDER out there. I know he's a huge guy and can lay big hits but he took 3 clear penalties in G6, the worst of which was an uncalled 5 minute board for anyone else in any other league. Given the physical play, I don't expect them to call most contact but at least one of them was awful. Also NBC is on his dick now that Syd is out. That's annoying.
