Why would anyone take a -145 over a +125 in a game 1?

Just dropped The Girl off at the Metro, she’s headed down to Capitol One with friends.

Just really pumped to get to experience this.

Good period, I’ve been told to stop yelling at the television twice already. Hats off to the NBC sports app that lets me watch the game live while pretending to listen to my son reading me a book.

Hard to tell for sure up here but not sure either goalie had a chance on all six goals so far. Maybe Miller’s opener I guess.

Man, Wilson really deserves a penalty for that cheap hit on Marchessault.

ETA: ok they finally put Wilson in the box but I didn’t see what Perron did to make it offset. (Not surprised though, Perron is also a cheap shotter.)

Perron actually jumped off the bench to engage a player which is a serious offense.

Having watched Vegas through the playoffs, there are two guys who look a lot better than I realized they were - Shea Theodore (especially), and Marchessault.

No, I reckon not. Too many rebounds for Holtby, too many loose pucks they didn't get to, etc. Just giving the view from VGK world here.

Will say the Caps are a lot faster than I remember them from last December. The only person the ice in the regular season who really made much an impression live was Ovie, but the rest of the team looked much faster yesterday. Maybe they did have the Vegas Flu in December.

Beyond general ethics, what's the good argument for Reaves not trucking Backstrom out of the series at this point? That was clearly Wilson's intent and if the refs and the league won't stop him, the only resort is forcing his own teammates to.

Regardless, get ready for a classic NHL ref show on Wednesday. The refs are coming in for a beating (rightfully so) for missing Reaves cross-check (which I didn't see as I haven't watched the DVR yet, but enough media types have said it was legit I believe it) and then shrugging after Wilson tried to assassinate Marchessault, so I suspect you'll see a lot of power plays and a bunch of ticky tack shit getting called. Hopefully Gallant tells the Knights to not try and retaliate and let the Caps get caught up trying to kill 10 penalties.

Except that won't work in the playoffs because the refs fear tilting a series. If the Caps take two in a row and Vegas goes up, it'll be right back to the same old playoff shit.

Which means we could see a bunch of power plays for each team, which hurts the game’s flow. But, if it just means a bunch of 4-on-4, then that could be fun.

1) Caps were playing the end of a 3 game road swing, the first two went into OT and this was a back-to-back game. I brought it up earlier, but the team was flat. Not a very good effort, by all accounts in the postgame comments.

2) I also mentioned in one of my nervous rambles that the biggest and least talked about* change for this team was picking up Kempney. Total gamechanger. It moved Orpik out of the top 4 and eventually allowed Djoos to settle in where other guys (Bowey and Chorney) were struggling to find their legs. All three of those guys are young (22-23), so Orpik covers for whatever rookie mistake they might make, and they can cover for his being old and slow. Djoos eventually proved most ready for things, so here we are. So now you've got Niskanen, Kempney and Orlov who can all skate really well, and Carlson, who gets it down with angles and decent wheels.

And like I said the other day, talking about the forwards, there has been this narrative, starting with the Pittsburgh series and carried to Tampa and now the Finals, that the Caps are slow... Or more correctly, that the opposition's speed was going to dictate and force Washington to chase. I didn't see that in the other series, at all, and I'm not really sure last night was an issue of speed. Caps were too loose with the puck and got caught up in some nonsense that pulled them out of their more disciplined game plan.

* - I will give the NBC guys credit, as they burned some time in the first period talking about what a big acquisition Kempney was for the Caps.

1) I think there's a good chance Wilson is going to catch a game suspension for that hit. He SHOULD sit for a game, Finals or not. That play was dirty and he needs to fucking learn.

2) I'm sure you've seen it by now, but that was an egregious miss. Not just as a stand alone missed call, but that it lets Vegas tie the game early in the 3rd.

Back to playing well or not, that goal was a major turning point. We're having a different discussion if Vegas has to struggle and grind as the clock starts becoming an issue. Tied with 17 minutes to go is a huge relief at that point.

Great first game.
By the way, circling back on this... He got slashed. Another missed call, but not nearly as egregious as the Reaves thing.

Yeah, they'll never call that at the end of games, but even if they did the penalty would have been worth if it led to Eller missing a sitter like that. Think there was only about 30 seconds or so left at that point. 6 on 4 is never fun but it is much better than a tying goal.

No suspension for Wilson, not that I expected one. Repeatedly clowning him for several goals on Wednesday will have to suffice as punishment.

I'm not seeing a story where motive is mentioned. That seems weird (and a little suspect, tbh).

That play happened about 2 minutes after the Reaves goal. --> motive

I think if he'd taken March- out of the game he'd be missing the next game. I also think that as dirty as it was in terms of being late, it was shoulder to shoulder contact. If he'd gone full goon and cleaned him out in the head... No question it's a suspension.

With only the slightest hyperbole, if he'd thrown that hit to the head, he should just be out of the league. He was later than Cooke vs Savard and that was 8 years ago.

It wasn't just late. It was also dirty because Marchessault never saw it coming, had no reason to expect it, and thus was completely unprotected.

Yeah, I'm not defending the hit on any level. Agree with this, too. Just saying that a truly despicable move would've been targeting the head there. I'm kind of surprised he didn't do that, frankly. Baby steps?

No one is giving him credit for throwing a check rather than swinging his stick either. Pretty unfair to Wilson.
