I agree on the Detroit point.

But an alternative theory, could it be a disagreement over getting Karlsson between Stevie Y and ownership?

I doubt he'd quit over that, but who knows?

I don't completely totally mean this, not totally, but I might kinda sorta maybe wonder if he's possibly developed a reputation as a guy you just don't want to trade with and removing himself from the title might clean things up.

It's definitely a major shock, although most of the initial tweets include a second point, which is that Brisebois was in high demand. Is he sick? A #metoo aggressor? Family issues? All more likely in my mind than Detroit. Maybe he's stressed out. I know I now am!

I won't pretend to be well versed in the San Jose system, but bouncing the trade off their prospect lists it certainly feels real low or the return if they really had attached Ryan's contract.

More

The deal includes the following:

Ottawa receives San Jose's first-round choice in either 2019 or 2020 (not lottery protected); if the Sharks miss the playoff in 2018-19 it will be a 2019 selection, otherwise it will be in 2020.

Ottawa receives a second-round choice in the 2019 draft from San Jose (which will be the higher of the two picks the Sharks currently own, the Florida Panthers and their own);

The deal also includes two conditional picks:

Should the Sharks sign Karlsson to a contract extension, Ottawa receives San Jose's second-round selection in 2021, which would upgrade to a first-round selection (not lottery protected) if San Jose reaches the Stanley Cup Final in 2019.

If Karlsson is on an Eastern Conference roster (reserve list) during the 2018-19 season, the Senators will receive an additional first round pick from the Sharks no later than 2022.

The insecurity clause post-Hoffman trade is amazing.

First inclination is SJ overpaid but I get it. Their window is shrinking. I think it’s ridiculous to give up that many assets without being able to work out an extension as a condition of the trade though. It’ll be hilarious if Eriksson just decides to sign a massive FA contract somewhere else after the Sharks are swept in April by Vegas.

Eh, they’re on a small window right now, so assume any two of those might go for a different veteran D to add. Makes sense to double the offer to get the best D and keep him away from everyone else. If Merkley were in the deal or someone like that, I’d agree on the one year aspect, but no one included will seriously hurt without playing well above their present day projection or value.

I don't know how any unbiased person can say San Jose overpaid, unless you really really really believe in draft picks. Karlsson is a generational talent and those don't become available often. Tierney is a 3rd line grinding center. A nice player but just a cog. DeMelo is a 6th/7th defenseman, eminently replaceable. Balcers put up good numbers last year in the AHL but he wasn't going to play for the Sharks this season. They said he needs at least another season in the minors to work on his defense. Josh Norris was a high draft pick, but stuff I read over the summer intimated he'd been passed by others in the system.

I am thrilled by this trade, and the fact that, as Degen noted, the other young emerging talents such as Timo Meier and Kevin LaBlanc weren't included.

Most of my distain is based on an extension not being a condition of the trade and the difference of assets that would be involved if it was. These assets going over to Ottawa should be contingent on a long-term deal. Karlsson still holds all of the cards in his FA deal.

Long-term IR will alleviate some of the financial pain... not that it matters. The few years it took for the league to normalize after the introduction of the salary cap was the beginning of the end of their run of success.

I don't think it was any coincidence that the Tigers' sustained run of success started when the NHL salary cap kicked in. Illitch shifted his focus to heavy spending in MLB around that time.

Holland has a pretty unimpeachable CV with the exception of cap management though of course that’s about 40 to 50 percent of the job now.

Cross-conference rivalries are rare but Florida/Vegas has an actual possibility of one for a lot of reasons.

Now you eastern conference fans will get to see firsthand what a dick asshole is Max Domi. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. I'll always remember that horrible blindside cheap shot Tie Domi laid on Scott Niedermeyer, knocking him out of the playoffs, literally.
