Buffalo trades ROR to St. Louis for Berglund, Sobotka, Thompson, '19 1st, '21 2nd
What is St. Louis thinking? Big win for the Sabres.

In the short term Western Conference gets stronger.

Eh, I don't think its that big for Buffalo? The best player, clearly, goes to St. Louis and no one headed the other way has the potential to be at his level. Feels similar to the McDonagh + JTM trade where there wasn't the big upside prospect(s) to balance out the veteran certainty and control headed the other way.

He's gonna miss Vegas in the winter. Wonder how much Vegas offered him and if they pulled the offer after signing Stastny? Not too bad of a signing at $5.75M AAV but that last year or two might be bad.

Definitely a year too long but the Flames are desperate to win now. Treliving is under immense pressure to win now having fired 2 coaches in 3 years and goalie and captain in their mid-30s.

So Caps pick up Nic Dowd, Travis Boyd and Michael Sgarbossa and Jayson Megna. The last 3 are on 2 way contracts. These are some depth moves but based on the value the caps got out of their decisions last off season I am on board.

This feels like a shining example of a contract that will, without any doubt at all, outlast the GM by several years. Every owner should have an unnamed trusted assistant to veto these sorts of deals.

Neil was going to get 5 years no matter where he went. It's just the price of doing business in hockey.

Sure, because GMs like Treliving are relatively common in the NHL.

Yup. Hockey is insane. They have a salary cap then screw each other on July 1.

I don't even know when baseball free agency even starts.. They negotiate players down to the brink of opening day almost.

Ryan O'Reilly is a good player. But, he isn't a difference-maker. Personally, if I was a Blues fan, I'd have been disappointed if they gave only those two high picks and the prospect (a 2016 first rounder) for him. Sobotka and Berglund are solid NHLers, too. They will make the team better. I guess we just disagree.

I'm a fan of Neal. He's a scorer who's also an obnoxious prick that is hard to play against. You like to have a guy like that on your team.

But, yeah, we can all agree it would have looked better for Calgary if it was a two-year deal.

That's not good for the rest of that division. Those boys are stacked now.

I mean, that's gonna be a VERY fun team to watch. NBC will surely find ways to feature them next year.

Very soon, they're likely going to have two of the three or four highest paid players in the NHL. Matthews entry-level contract is up this year and there's no reason to think he isn't going to get paid. It's a good problem to have, but they won't have much cap flexibility going forward.

Beagle is a huge loss, which is weird to say about your 4th line center, but he is just massive on faceoffs and on the penalty kill. Big locker room presence, too. Dowd is decent at the drop, but he's 51 percent... Beagle was 58 percent, good for 4th in the league.

But they had to let him go.

Vrana and Bura are RFAs next year... Gotta keep cap space for those guys.

Musing a bit more about the Ryan O'Reilly trade. I guess the Blues had already decided to replace Sobotka and Berglund with free agent additions Bozak and Perron anyway, so it didn't bother them any to add them to pieces they gave Buffalo in the trade. Which makes some sense, except that, imho, the two they added aren't any better players than the two they gave up, and they will pay them a lot more for a lot longer (I assume - didn't check.)

Interesting piece I read said that one of the pieces Ottawa might be interested in in a deal with Vegas would be David Clarkson’s $5M cap hit since it’s insured (would only cost Ottawa $1M in cash) and it would get them to salary floor on the cheap. Could be a lot of picks and players going back and forth.

Unless TB can take Ryan as well (which they can't) might as well get ready for some blue balls.

Kucherov extended. 8 years (starting '19-'20) 9.5 per.

Think one of the weird issues I find with the NHL is that the salaries are so low (relatively), it's pretty hard to be surprised by contracts for a guy like Kucherov. I realize it's more than the money when it comes to stuff like NMCs, but it seems like these kinds of extensions can be knocked out in like 10 minutes.

Compared to the other big 3 sports, yes, they're underpaid. The crazy thing about this is that if we can get the Rangers to take Callahan (and Killorn or Johnson too, would be nice), I think there's still room for Karlsson. There certainly is next year (Callahan is at 5.8, EK at 6.5). It's the extension where it gets tricky, as Point will need a bridge deal beginning in 19/20, and you've got to think that even with no state tax that EK will get at least 9 per season here.

The Lightning are very F heavy in the minors, but they've also overcommitted to Callahan, Killorn and Johnson, IMO. That being said, the window is now plus 5 years. Getting rid of Callahan would be huge.

And I think a lot of GMs are terrified of being slammed for a long term deal. Yzerman doesn't have that sort of concern gene.

For sure, but you can't even do deals to manipulate cap space anywhere near to the extent you can in the NFL, so it's basically just a yes or no decision on if the guy wants to re-sign and if the team wants to re-sign him. With someone like Kucherov, it was an obvious yes on both sides so it was just a question on when the deal gets done with no suspense or surprise on the money or the term.
