Take this score off the corner kick by Belgium. Kompany went high and headed it, and on the way towards the net, it got deflected off Fernadinho's upper arm/shoulder as he was jumping to defend it and it went in. I didn't see that as any different than when in hockey the winger centers it into the trash in front of the net, the center one-times it and it deflects off a defender trying to make a play and into the net. No one would place the blame on the defender in the hockey sense, as it happens frequently enough. It seems odd that defenders they are so much more "blamed" in soccer.
The rule is generally if the shot is on goal they will let the offensive player have it even if it's deflected. I don't think it was going to be on target without the deflection.
There's not really an official FIFA "rule" that is applied consistently. Some leagues don't count inadvertent deflections as an OG, others do. There weren't even official guidelines until fairly recently because they needed to clear things up for goal scoring competitions (and probably for some gambling situations).

Him, Fellani, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Chadli, Courtois... hell, all of them.

But Man of the Match is Hazard. He must have run 50 miles out there.

And Martinez looks like a genius sticking that big clod Fellani in there (Chadli too). It seemed like every time Coutinho got the ball, he was immediately facing Fellani, Alderweireld or Witsel.

Great stuff.

And it's always nice to see Brazil knocked out of the tournament. It's been over 30 years since they had the type of team that people still think they have.

Absolutely. Kompany was huge. The whole Belgian team played at their peak.

And you know, most of the Brazil team did as well. Something about that Yellow shirt makes people think they are gods among men, and they can only lose to a powerful team (like Belgium) if they are not playing well. Seen it for a number of tournaments.

They lack a finisher, which is remarkable with Neymar out there. But the amount of dangerous chances they create and the lack of finishing is pretty stunning.

France's midfield is going to destroy Belgium's -- assuming that they hang on -- but I'm fascinated to see how Belgium's ability to attack down the flanks will challenge Pavard and Hernandez.
You think? Or, am I just inaccurately labeling Hazard and DeBruyne as mids? Because those two are bosses, and Fellaini has a bit of a role with this squad.

I was referencing their formation yesterday, which was pretty much a midfield three of Chadli, Fellaini and Witsel with the awesome three higher up the pitch.

I also think that De Bruyne in a deeper position would get bossed by Pogba and Kante. But De Bruyne and Hazard vs. France's backs? Oh boy.

The Total Soccer Show guys went into detail about how Belgium switched between three and four defenderswhen with or without the ball. They were really lauding his tactics.

Geiger in the mix to ref either the England - Croatia or the final. And this article perfectly sums up what annoyed me about all the bitching re: his performance in the ENG-COL match. Those guys were giving him ZERO respect, and when you start from there, and you start trying to be cynical and dirty... It's like how asshole kids treated substitute teachers without ever giving them a chance to be cool.

Turkish ref has been given the England-Croatia semi

Uruguayan ref to get France-Belgium semi, that's two matches in a row France gets the ref from the country that they just knocked out.

Geiger in contention for the final but it'll most likely be Kuipers from Holland or Rocchi from Italy

As much as I thought his treatment last game was bullshit, he absolutely should not be doing the final.

I wonder if FIFA was kind of getting his back a little there. He also had that bullshit from Morocco, accusing him of wanting Ronaldo's jersey.
