Reminds me of DC United right before they got really bad, under Rongen. They'd possess and possess, side to side, to no end. No sense of urgency, no attacking spirit.

It's hard to turn that off and on. They said hypnotic on the broadcast... That lulling sense works both ways.

Spain with a 1-0 lead is my least favorite team to watch. They just play keepaway and don’t even try to use their attacking talent. I hated the 2010 Championship team because that was how all their games played out. Glad that Russia got that PK to make this a game again.

It's not. Goalkeepers step up and do amazing things, or kickers suck it up and bury the nerves and put the ball in the back of the net.

It's not like they spin them around 10 times with their forehead on a wiffleball bat.

I know it's not perfect, but people devalue the result too much.

The best chance they had came on one of the only plays where someone tried something other than immediately making a short pass — Rodrigo’s nice dummy into the run at the defender. Also, isn’t Costa really good at cleaning up on plays in front of the goal (I vaguely remember him scoring lots of “ugly” goals for Chelsea)? Why not just serve more balls into the box to see what he can do?

Their goal came from a ball into the box. Their other goals in the tourney came from direct play. Like Costas first goal.

Why do this?
