If I were to change one thing in soccer is to play one 30 minute period of extra time like this, then play another 30 minute period of extra time, add a 5th sub and make it sudden death. Then go to penalties.

At no point in the past 1.5 hours has it looked like this game would avoid going to penalties.

Yes, and I don't mean to profile. But, I do recall that a Colombian player who caused an own-goal at a previous World Cup was murdered when he got home. People all over the world take this stuff seriously.
Escobar... They made a really good 30 for 30 about it. Came against the US.

I think an extra 60 is too much, but you're on the right track with that thinking. Maybe 20 and 20 would work.

it would give teams (Russia) at the beginning of the game less incentive to try and bunker for penalties if the path to get there is longer.

The penalty save was nice, but Pickford flat out had the save of the tournament and nobody is going to talk about it.

If hating the English smug superiority about a game they falsely claim to have invented and which they're shite at is wrong, I don't want to be right.

But this is a better team - half-Spurs after all.

watched the game in the basement. no way i see that game out in public. too much nerves.

Quintero needed to step up. didn't.
Pekerman was too long in bringing on the subs.
a fit James would've been a difference maker.
it wasn't a penalty.
Geiger sucks in MLS and doesn't belong anywhere near a game of that caliber.
hats off to England for finally winning in PKs

oh and the stupid jokes about Escobar, cocaine and all such things i've been seeing on social media. just that. Stupid. Grow the fuck up.

Hell of a game. After Japan's second goal, once they put Fellaini in, Belgium just shifted into a different gear.
how is he today?
He was in a good mood. He understood that Japan played a great game and came very close. It was quite possibly the highlight of their soccer history. And he's a huge soccer fan, so he's into all the other games too.

I don't know if Uruguay is being defensive or they just can't mount an attack. France too solid.

Uruguay are annoying, but a somewhat entertaining team with two world class strikers (it was Forlan until Cavani took his spot). With just Suarez, they are ass.

That yellow on mbappe should be a warning to neymar. I'll almost guarantee he gets one later today.

Hilariously ironic about Suarez getting incensed by another players dive.

I get these guys are adults and they can take the little bit of embarrassment, but I think the definition of an Own-Goal is pretty loose. Take this score off the corner kick by Belgium. Kompany went high and headed it, and on the way towards the net, it got deflected off Fernadinho's upper arm/shoulder as he was jumping to defend it and it went in. I didn't see that as any different than when in hockey the winger centers it into the trash in front of the net, the center one-times it and it deflects off a defender trying to make a play and into the net. No one would place the blame on the defender in the hockey sense, as it happens frequently enough. It seems odd that defenders they are so much more "blamed" in soccer.

France's midfield is going to destroy Belgium's -- assuming that they hang on -- but I'm fascinated to see how Belgium's ability to attack down the flanks will challenge Pavard and Hernandez.

The rule is generally if the shot is on goal they will let the offensive player have it even if it's deflected. I don't think it was going to be on target without the deflection.
