WHRU (Hofstra) 88.7 FM is the radio home of the Islanders? Great. Can you even pick that up off campus?

Deadspin has a nice recap of the Habs-Sens game.
I watched some of it, but missed the massive brawl. Last night, the Habs looked like a cheapshotting mofos.

I'm not a hockey rules aficionado, but it sure looked to me like the Isles dude had both hands on Crosby and was pulling him down. I didn't understand the analysts afterward, mentioning that Crosby was a "strong skater". Are the rules different for strong skaters?
I'm probably wrong but if so, please tell me why. I didn't see anything involving elbows. I saw hands.

Watched the whole thing live. I have no dog in this fight. Montreal was classless last night and yet in Post game interview their HC called Ottawa classless for taking a TO at the end to keep their players away from the fray. Now that was ballsy!Sabo wrote:Deadspin has a nice recap of the Habs-Sens game.

By the way, I thought the officials did a great job of handling a total cluster fuck. Gave everyone from both teams 5+10 and sent them to the locker rooms to prevent even further escalation. Best possible way to handle it, I thought.
Oh, and Georges firing a slap shot at the legs of Turris at the end. Really classy move there! Should be suspensions coming to Georges, Subban, White and Bourque. Let's see how Shanahan handles this one.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Confrence
Montreal broke down as a team last night because of one guy. And only one guy. One guy bitching out a team-mate in front of the team, one guy that effectively allowed a goal and took a penalty on the play in which he allowed that goal (it was 1-1 before that major fuck up). One guy who took seven (seven!) penalties for a total of 25-minutes. One guy who had ZERO points and finished the game as a minus. One guy who basically fucked up their entire game, if not their entire series. And it's far too obvious who that is.

No shit! He was an embarrassment to hockey last night. And to his team, and to himself, though he probably thinks he did nothing wrong. Which is why some day sometime in his hockey future, he will act like this again. Take it to the bank.Scottie wrote:Montreal broke down as a team last night because of one guy. And only one guy. Oh, and no hearing from NHL for Bourgue? He elbowed a Senator player in the head, on purpose, and they claim to be trying to eliminate head shots? Pathetic, if true.
My take: White, Georges and Bourque get one game each. Subban gets 2.
Probably no one gets any, though.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Confrence
Remember this. At the end of the 2nd period, it was 2-1 Ottawa. With a couple of minutes to go in the 2nd, Subban, who was already having a terrible game and had been an asshole all night, lost control and started screaming at Pacioretty. Then Andrei Markov, an assistant captain, tried to get Subban to knock it off. Subban told him to "shut the fuck up", pushed him away and kept yelling.
The HNIC guys, during the 2nd intermission, all agreed that the Habs have to get that under control in the locker room RIGHT NOW or they were going to self-destruct. Clearly, they failed to get Subban under control. Subban came out in 3rd and had the worst, most useless, most destructive to a team, period you'll ever see a player have. So what happened during intermission? My bet is that Subban didn't relent, got even more pissed off, wouldn't listen to anyone, believed he was right and everyone else was wrong, and crushed any cohesion that team had.
Down 2-1 on the road in a playoff series that is tied 1-1 ain't necessarily a bad place to be. Then? Ottawa scores a minute into the 3rd on a ridiculous Habs breakdown. After seven-minutes in the 3rd the game has gone from 2-1 to 5-1 and the Habs have stopped even talking to each other.
Yes, it is a team game, sure. But last night showed you exactly how one selfish and incompetent player can fuck up the program for an entire team. If the league suspends Subban (they likely won't), it would be the best possible outcome for the Habs. They really need to get that moron out of the line-up.

Caps already up 1-0 and just out hustling the Rangers all over the ice. Most of the 50-50 pucks and scrums in the corners seem to come up white. Similarly the Rangers pack it in D is letting the caps pass it around the edge and just fire pucks in from the point. Caps D-men are pretty strong at that part of the game. I mean Green leads D-men in goals year-in-year out when he is healthy.

I wish that Ottawa had plowed Montreal in Game 2 since they were probably going to lose it anyways but was glad the Habs were made to look like chumps back in Ottawa.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Confrence
The embellishment stuff is getting fucking out of hand. And if people want to bitch about Ovechkin, they need to go back and watch/listen to what the NBC crew was saying about Callahan during game 2. Praising the guy for essentially running into a Caps guy in open ice and drawing a penalty.
It's actually fascinating. In soccer it's a card and generally thought to be a shitty thing to do. The NBA analysts talk about flopping and (rightly) point to it killing the game.
But the NBC crew sits there and praises it as smart play and if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'.
Fuck that. It's a shitty way to play the game.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Confrence
I think some of the embellishment charges have their roots in the poor officiating. Yesterday, Ovechkin to a hard high stick to, at least, the upper chest, if not the throat or chin. So, he snaps his head back and, yes, embellishes, to ensure the refs saw what happened. Does he look a bit ridiculous? Yes. But that doesn't take away from the fact that it was an infraction that ought to be called.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Confrence
You see, that is actually an excellent call. Only a savvy ref would've spotted the extra Caps skater behind that wall of Rangers.

I accepted that when the Rangers tied the game at 1 and and went ahead 2-1. I am not sure which Ranger was trolling the Swamp in the 2nd part of the 1st period, but I clearly must have gotten that post tapped up in their locker room.Nonlinear FC wrote:wlu_lax6 wrote:Caps already up 1-0 and just out hustling the Rangers all over the ice. Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Conference
Almost the exact call went against the Islanders earlier this season. I have a tough time with it, because I have a tough time considering a schuss to be a kicking motion. He's stopping using his blades, and they don't leave the ice or move forward.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Conference
I wonder why it matters that it's a kicking motion. I know it might be heresy, but why not just let them kick it in?
Hell, Ovechkin had a beautiful kick pass that started a nice 2 on 1 the other night. It's ok to pass with an obvious kicking motion, but not to score?
I dunno, I guess I'm a soccer guy so I see that there's a decent amount of skill involved.
Anybody got a good reason not to allow goals to be kicked in?

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Conference
I don't like seeing skate goals count in the first place but, damn, it strikes me as bloody obvious that Zibanejad deliberately guided that in. He's looking right at the puck as it comes his way and then, suddenly, his skates just happen to move into a perfect position to "deflect" (or redirect) the puck into the exact spot where it beats the goaltender. And as a leftie, that was pretty much all he could do. Nah, that's no goal. And if the refs called it no goal, I really doubt you'd get any argument from the Senators.

Re: NHL Playoffs RD 1 - Eastern Conference
Because a line has to be drawn somewhere if only to define the game itself.Nonlinear FC wrote:Anybody got a good reason not to allow goals to be kicked in?
In soccer, you can throw it in from the sidelines, a goaltender can handle the ball. But you can't throw the ball into the opponent's net, right?
If you allow ice hockey goals to be kicked in, then do you also allow goals to be batted in with a glove? Eliminate high-sticking and let guys whack the puck out of the air at head height? Nah. There has to be restrictions in any sport if only to give a sport its unique identity.

It's also not a good idea to have offensive players kicking at the puck with razor blade skates in the goal crease while the goalie and/or other players are trying to smother/clear it.
