World Lacrosse Champions (Israel 2018)

Lots of game on ESPN networks. Tonight US beating Iroquois in the first big game. Iroquois landed in Israel 8 hours before the game because of more passport problems. They were winning 7 to 5 at half before getting tired.

Canada almost did not go because the players were having problems with Canada's governing body (which got on trouble and lost non-profit status).

But USA and Canada games are not to miss. Israel will be good along with Iroquois and Aussies. Japan, Ireland, and Germany can play good ball too.

But the lesser games are fun to. Jamaica has one of Bob Marley's grandkids on the roster. Uganda back for the 2nd time at the championship. Lots of European and Asian teams.

Are the players in these smaller countries mostly US players with eligibility in those countries? Or guys who are from those countries, but who went to school in the US? Or are there legit home-grown lax players from these countries?

The Iroquois Nation get their own team? That's neat.

Pretty sure we (wlu_lax) had a thread about that but he either spelled Iroquois wrong or it was another Swamp. It looks like 2010 was the year that they had major travel issues, so probably the latter.

Some of both. For exmaple:
Israel is a mix of Jewish kids from the U.S. (including a guy who played on the US team 4 years ago and one the Heisman-equivalent) and native Israeli.
Ireland is a mix
Scotland are all kilt wearing goofballs and Canadians.
Jamaica is a mix of locals and 1st generation Americans (one midfielder was an AA from Syracuse)
Uganda are all from Africa (There is a program that has worked hard to send players into Uganda, Jamacia and Costa Rica to teach the game)
Brits are all Brits
Mexico is a mix
Italy is basically Long Island
China is all China
Hong Kong is all Hong Kong

46 teams. Was originally 48. This is probably the last time they don't have qualifications to make the finals.
The top group is the Blue group 6 teams (USA, Iroquois, Canada, Australia, England, Scotland). All the other groups are mixed based on seeding (Basically 1 decent team, 1 middle, and 1 bad--one group had 4 teams). Winners of the groups have a way to play into the championship but really are trying to advance far enough to earn promotion to the blue group in 4 years. So Japan used to be a Blue group team and Israel lost a heart breaker to to Scotland for the right to be in the top group 4 year ago.

The tournament plays out so every team gets a final seeding between 1 and 46 for the next championship.

I'm trying to figure out the format.

In the blue group top two make the semis, next 2 make the quarters and then the bottom two drop into a crazy play-in tournament for 2 spots?
The play-in might be more fun then the final four!

Ha, Italy's coach coached at my high school for a few years (after I was gone). He played at UVA and coached various youth levels in Charlottesville when I was a kid. I thought he was a dick.

And was a 4 time AA, is in the Ohio, long island, and Charlottesville Hall of Fames. He has 26 years as the head coach of Denison and before this year was 13th overall for wins as a college lacrosse coach.

Lots of Euro teams are coached by Americans. But usually not with such a pedigree. A guy I played with after college coached Germany, One.of the local high school coaches another. A few years ago nonlinears' soccer coach took the reigns of a team.

Yeah, he has a pedigree. Of course, that's 26 years at DIII school.

USA beat Canada by 1. Held on after a stick violation (coach calls equipment check) on the faceoff man. Which is considered pretty bush league. But stick was illegal. US kills the extraman and holds on to win.

So US of A wins the championship coming from behind to win. BUT big controversy at the end of the game. Some bad clock work by the timers gave US extra time and they scored. Canada got hosed.

Good video from the end of the game here (just realize the clock on screen is not official time...but still goofy).
