A grand jury report into clergy sex abuse revealed 90 offenders in the Pittsburgh Diocese, the most of any other Diocese under investigation, and sharply criticized some former bishops for protecting the most abusive priests.
The report detailed a predatory ring of priests who manufactured child pornography, shared intelligence on victims and gave large gold crosses to certain boys to mark them as already being "groomed," for abuse.
Looks like this is back in time a little bit, but, still.
The report listed 99 offenders, with nine unidentified priests, and 90 identified but eight redacted names. The eight redacted names are the subject of litigation by the named subjects to hide their identities.
The Diocese was the largest of the six under investigation for this report. It employs 211 priests at 188 parishes.

99 of 211 priests! That's mind-boggling.
And, yet...
(I know we could just keep doing this all day.)
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Well, there's no way I'm gonna defend the Catholic Church or the Diocese of Pittsburgh, but I personally find his militant brand of atheism off-putting and I myself am an atheist. That's as far as I'll go since there's no need to poke that hibernating bear.

Imagine being in a profession where close to half of your contemporaries were the most vile form of human scum.
By the way, one of the priests mentioned in the report still (as of two hours ago) had his contact info up on the Archdiocese of Pittsburgh's website on the page headed "Pray for Our Priests."
I am glad that I saw it in the afternoon and not after a beer or two.

For those of you who haven’t seen Spotlight, Mike Rezendes is the lead reporter who broke the story of the abuse coverup in Boston.
And at the end of the movie, the list out the dozens of places around the world where they know that dozens/hundreds/thousands of priests were known to have been pedophiles.
That was all years and years ago, really the beginning of the awareness on all of this.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Sorry guys. I'm trying to come up with something to say about a pederasty ring that wouldn't be off-putting to Brian.

For someone who supposedly prizes intellectual rigor when it comes to atheism you're the fucking King Of The Strawmen.
How would you interpret this in any other way that my take is going to be off-putting to you?
I wonder what Jerloma's take on this is gonna be.
The right one.

Also, this has nothing to do with atheism.

Yeah, the Catholic Church has enabled sex predators for at least decades, probably centuries. Maybe it wasn't the right time to make a comment about your atheism jones.
Can't find the Tweet but there was a good one asking where are all the moderate Christians at condemning this behavior? Or have they all become radicalized?

My hot take? Most Christian moderates have long since basically abandoned the church and religion.

No, they go to church most Sundays. They might say grace before dinner. But they don't really believe, at least not with any passion. It's just easier to go along with the rituals with the masses.
I go to church. I believe in God. I consider myself a Christian. I love Christmas. Yet I have a very difficult time believing much of the fundamental tenets.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord;
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

When you toss a dollar into that collection plate you're condoning pederasty.

Not just condoning, but aiding and abetting the coverup.
Not to be pedantic, and I love the tweet Gunpowder mentioned, but shouldn't we just be calling out Catholics, not all Christians?

Hey, remember when Sinead O'Conner torpedoed her career by doing this on SNL?
She was way ahead of the game....
Her experiences growing up in Ireland where the church ran what amounted to a child trafficking and slave labour ring and where mass graves of "fallen women" have been found on the sites of the Magdelene Asylums must have played a part in her anger.

Well since they worship the same all-Powerful all-knowing God (and Son) who created these monsters and said Deity did nothing to stop it, No.

A day care center gets accused of this, a mob would probably burn it to the ground. These pedophiles don;t even pay fucking taxes.
Absolutely. Hell, the HRCC is held to a lower moral standard than Penn State!
I'm going to appease Brian here for a second and get all militanty. Even the Catholics that are no longer funding this cesspool of an institution are implicit in this, because if you're going to wear that badge, and promote a deity that would allow this to happen in his church, by people who claim to speak for him, and because they claim to speak for him, in exchange for a chance at immortality...you have a moral obligation to make sure he exists.
Reverence is all they have left. Once that goes, kids will stop being brainwashed and raped.

I don't think it's especially militant to demand that an organization response for enabling and protecting pedophiles be brought to justice or at least whatever forms of justice (lawsuits, public shaming, prosecution) are available when you're dealing with an organization cloaked in immense power. That's why it wasn't the right forum to make a dig at your militant atheism.
