I think that a lot of political journalists would really like to view American politics as a pastime of Great Men.™️

McCain’s truly admirable military service played into that view and colored their perception of him much more than his very flawed politics.

Had to jump off the FAcebook - at least 10 (Canadian) friends posting "heartfelt" farewells.

"Sarah palin's running mate" sums it up nicely.

Yes, McCain's politics weren't all that agreeable. He made a horrible decision letting Palin team-up with his presidential candidacy a decade ago. But dude. Life's always in the grays.

What happens next to John McCain's Senate seat
State law gives Ducey, a Republican, the power to fill the Senate vacancy for the next two years, until a special election in 2020 for the right to complete the final years of McCain's term. The seat will then be up again for a full six-year term in the 2022 election. Arizona law also stipulates that the appointee must be from McCain's party.
Who could be appointed to John McCain's Senate seat?

Ah yes. Let’s clutch our pearls and stand firm on the higher ground. How dare he say things that might’ve sounded like something spoken from Mount Justice For All?

I think I land somewhere in between these two positions. But the point Brian and others have made has made me think about how we are taught that American military service is to be lauded, even in an unjust war like Vietnam or Iraq. Yet I really don’t think we extend that view to soldiers of countries that aren’t our allies. There’s a definite hypocrisy there.

Drumpf hates McCain so much because he's the ideal shitty republican template who just has to politely disagree 13% of the time, smile and crack grandpa jokes in order to gain the public trust and he can't even bother to just copy it because he's too stupid, stubborn, and/or puppeted.

His time in Vietnam rightly gained him a lot of admiration, but in my view (as an outsider of course) the only praiseworthy accomplishments were defending Obama to that woman at the election rally. Granted, it was to a large extent his fault that a mouth-breather would accuse Obama of being an "Arab" as he legitimized these assholes by unleashing palin on the world.

(The HBO version of his campaign catches Schmidt's supposed horror as he realized just what an imbecile Palin is)

The other accomplishment was asking that the sitting president not be invited to his funeral. Otherwise, he was Orrin Hatch if Hatch cared about his image on the coasts.

IMO, his best political achievement was campaign finance reform. But unfortunately, the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United makes it harder to get further traction there. Otherwise, his “independence” on domestic issues often seemed to be motivated by personal resentments (deserved, in the cases of GWB and DJT) rather than principle.

McCain was one of the very worst politicians of his era on foreign policy, and that’s saying a lot. He never met a war he didn’t like and was one of the first prominent elected officials to push for the Iraq invasion.

The great response to that woman isn't all that great when you consider that his response implies racism as well. I'm not willing to hold his feet to the fire to be like Beto on the NFL in a open forum like that, but his response is that he's not Arab, he's a decent family man and citizen, as if being Arab and a decent family man and citizen are mutually exclusive.

I mean, to be a little more objective, he DID participate in a number of the Gang of xx moves to help broker bipartisan solutions on tough issues like immigration. And as stated above, he did well with campaign finance.

It's just that as has been said here and elsewhere, his maverick title is WAAAAY overblown.

"Petty" may not be a strong enough word. Like a fucking 4 year old.
At an Oval Office press event Monday, the president refused to address McCain, sitting in silence as reporters repeatedly shouted questions about the late senator’s life and legacy.
