Online poker officially legal again

Post by brian »

Well, only in Nevada at least. And only one specific poker site (for right now).

But it is a start. The story doesn't say it, but the expansion of online poker is expected to proceed thusly.

1) Nevada regulators and the state legislature have approved a dozen or so other online poker websites -- those will go online in the next 6 to 12 months for Nevadans only.

2) Other states' legislatures (specifically New Jersey and Delaware) have already approved online poker. They can theoretically develop their own systems for play in only their state, but most likely they'll license the Nevada online poker operators once they're satisfied that the sites are safe, secure, etc. and that will allow Nevadans to play against New Jerseyianites (or whatever), etc. Essentially a "national" website.

3) Most (but probably not all) other states will jump in once they want a piece of the proceeds.

Left to be determined is if foreign players will be allowed to participate, but most likely not due to concerns about money laundering, etc.
