Explain how that makes him a puss? (I didn't see the game.)
The NBC guys picked up a fun exchange between the benches. I don't have the text in front of me but basically Crosby was getting on Ovi to "go fight him". I think Crosby was getting on Ovi for letting Wilson go beatup Oleksiak instead of Ovi. So Ovi challenged Crosby to a fight which shut up Crosby. The after the game interview with Crosby, this exchange came up and Crosby made some statement like he was not instigated the exchange with Ovi.

In the grand scheme of things it was a pretty basic NHL exchange...but as a caps fan you have to pick on Sid (especially after his really nice work in front of the goal to knock in the winner).

Like I said, this was a fun game. Pens sold out defensively and had two great efforts to keep a puck from sneaking in as it was on the line. The Pens also played a bunch of PK and that usually kills teams against the Caps, but good kills and a good night from Murray gave them the win.

When he's not jumping into players' heads, Ovechkin is pretty awesome.

I got my tickets tonight, should be a great one!

Best in the East against almost Best in the West. Plus the crowd is always pumped when Tampa comes to town.

I think it'll be the same for you whenever Washington comes to town (as was proven a few weeks ago)

I've got a dollar that says that won't last.

But, give the Flames their due. They've played great. Especially Giordano.

ETA: I'm going to the West Side Story game tonight. Sharks on 5-game win streak, against team with currently the best record in the West, the Jets. Should be a good game.

Corey Pronman's World Juniors prospect preview has two Vegas prospects as his projected offensive (Cody Glass, Canada) and defensive (Erik Brannstrom, Sweden) MVPs of the entire tournament and I got a little hard. Can't wait for some of these prospects to finally get to the NHL.

So it's a slow day, so here's what would be a great NHL Swampcrash question. Marc-Andre Fleury will almost certainly have his jersey number retired by two different teams when his career is over. By the end of the 2019 season, nine (9) players will have had their jerseys retired by two different teams.

Who are they?

So far we have correct:

Bobby Hull - Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes
Gordie Howe - Detroit Red Wings and Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes
Wayne Gretzky - Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings (also retired league-wide)
Ray Bourque - Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche
Mark Messier - New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers
Patrick Roy - Colorado Avalanche and Montreal Canadiens

Three left. These are harder, but none are too crazy. The 9th might be hardest and ironically, the second retirement is happening this week.

Cory Schneider has not gotten an NHL win in over a year. 0-15-3 since December 27, 2017. Playing under a seven-year $42 million contract ($6M AAV) he signed in 2014. The contract expires at the end of the 2021-22 season.

I'll give some hints for the last three. These are the teams the jerseys are/will be retired for.

Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs
Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs (Red Wings retirement happening this week)
Anaheim Ducks and New Jersey Devils (Devils retirement happening later this season)

Yep to Neidermayer (Anaheim and New Jersey). Two left. Another hint. Both players played at least part of their careers in the Original Six era.

I looked it up and would have never gotten either one. I was surprised Francis isn’t retired by the Penguins but I guess they’ve only retired Mario’s and the number of a player who died from a car accident after his rookie year.

Yeah, the Pens will have a whole bunch of retired jerseys before too long. The only players worthy from the first Cup teams are probably Lemieux and Jagr and he just retired. From the second era of Cup teams they'll retire Crosby and presumably Fleury and Malkin.

Last two hints and I'll reveal at the end of the my work day at 5 p.m. ET.

Player One died while still playing (he scored only 1 career goal for Buffalo) and is more well-known in North America (even Canada) for something other than playing hockey.

Player Two was a Canadian MP while still playing in the NHL and was instrumental in the adoption of the current Canadian flag.

Both are in the Hockey Hall of Fame as players.

Final one was the hardest - Red Kelly (Toronto and Detroit). I thought it was this week so that was kinda bad info, but his jersey will be retired by the Red Wings on Feb. 1.

Wondering if not doing an extension at the time of the trade to SJ is going to cost him any money.

Arizona is one of those teams you don’t watch very much and can never quite figure out why they suck when you do. They have a lot of speed, a lot of skill and just don’t seem to win many games.

(When I wrote that it was 2-1 VGK and Arizona just seemed to kind of give up in the third period so maybe that explains that.)

Don’t look now but the VGK tied for Western Conference lead now.

They’ve been great, and I’m not ruling out Vegas winning the Pacific. But it’s a bit premature to view them as the leader, as Calgary has three games in hand (and San Jose has two games in hand).

Just going by that column with "Points" on the header. Games in hand are important and a factor if you were making a bet on a division winner, but also worth noting VGK has the second-best home record in the NHL behind Tampa with only 17 road games (23 at home) left.

And a point apropos of nothing. Crowd for the Arizona game tonight was 50/50 between Coyotes and VGK fans and while I'm sure it's understandable on some levels when Chicago or Pittsburgh or even Minnesota fans fill up your barn, it's gotta really sting when a team that's only 1.5 years old does it.

First year I can remember when I had no interest in the winter classic. I know the Caps recently hosted and did the game at the Naval Academy or have played as the away team, so that may have increased my interest in years past, but I made a point of watching parts in previous years. This year...meh. I think I am more interested in the Notre Dame-Michigan game this weekend.

too much of the same playing each other. Chicago are now 1-6 in outdoor games.

Next year at the Cotton Bowl might peak some interest again.

NHL had a chance to do something really cool by slotting Vegas into the Heritage Classic in Regina next season and didn't do it. We might have gotten a chance to see how much legs the Saskatchewan Golden Knights really has.
