2018 NFL Week 5

Post by tennbengal »

It's the return of the suspended players week. Edelman. Burfict. Jimmy Smith for the Ravens. Others, I would guess.

Also Jacksonville at KC. Best defense to test Mahomes yet. Not that it will matter...

Don't tell Sabo, but I feel this is the prime week to bench Mahomes in fantasy.

We all know football is the most popular sport in America, but was still surprised when I saw this blurb about tv sports viewing last Monday night.
Brewers-Cubs: 2.53 million viewers.

Rockies-Dodgers: 2.69 million viewers.

Chiefs-Broncos: 13.21 million viewers

To be somewhat fair, the baseball games were during the day. But yeah, even under normal circumstances, a regular season NFL game will dwarf an MLB playoff game. I think the World Series is the only thing that's close to an average Sunday Night Football game and still is about 1/3rds lower typically.

Game 7 last year beat all non-playoff games.

Yeah, but that was Game 7. And last year's WS was one of the highest rated (other than the Cubs WS) since the mid-00s. Bodes well that ratings are up, but over the last 18 years or so even the World Series draws less than a SNF game.

Bill Polian, Colts president and vice chairman 1997-2011, current ESPN analyst: "I don't think it was made into a bigger deal than it should have been. It was a big deal. It occurred in a championship game. There was a rule that was broken. The league investigated, and what took place after was up to the people involved. Patriots fans feel very strongly about it, and I'm sure people on the other side feel very strongly about it. It was not a big deal about nothing, no matter what anybody says."

Pat McAfee, Colts punter 2009-16: "I think anybody with a brain could figure out that Deflategate was turned into something that was much larger than it needed to be.

Truly incredible stat I just read on Deadspin...
in fact, the average passer rating this season is two points higher than Joe Montana’s CAREER passer rating).
30 years ago, no one had stats like Montana.

Of course, since then they've changed things a lot to the benefit of the passing game. Pass-blocking rules liberalized. Hashmarks moved towards the middle of the field. Can only hold up receivers within 5 yards of scrimmage. Can't hammer defenseless receivers. Additional rules to protect quarterbacks. I'm probably forgetting other things.

Yeah, and back in the day, it was the same story. They changed the rules whereby a cornerback could basically tackle a receiver coming off the line in the early 80s.

You know, a defence that can give up less than 20 points a game in 2018 would be an incredible accomplishment.

I grew up watching 24-10 games. Stats are skewed - I maintain that Terry Bradshaw was an all-time great, even though his stats would make him seem way inferior to Ryan Fitzpatrick!

I think offensive strategy changes have been just as important as the rule changes. Wasn’t the big innovation of Bill Walsh’s offense the idea of using short, high-percentage passes as a substitute for the running game, whereas earlier QBs used more high-risk/high-reward downfield passing? Bradshaw threw a ton of INTs compared to modern QBs because he was launching the ball deep a lot more often. Walsh’s shift towards shorter, higher percentage passing plays was a big part of why Montana was the most efficient QB of his era. Now, every NFL offense relies heavily on that type of action. I would imagine there also have been commensurate passing game advancements at the HS and college levels that have made the average NFL QB a lot more sophisticated than he used to be. I bet Baker Mayfield came into the league with much more advanced schematic knowledge than Elway or Montana or the other stars of the 80’s.

Wait, what?

I have seen every minute of his pro career and he looks like a rookie with some potential... nothing more at this point.

The turnaround has been on defence where the Bills went from being Falcon-level bad to being pretty decent (at least when playing bad QBs).
