I think you’ll split those bets. I predict Gillum pulls it out but O’Rourke and Abrams lose. And I think the Democrats will gain a narrow majority in the House but the Senate will be 50-50 or 51-49 GOP.mister d wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:35 pm I have two bets on tomorrow, one that says < 2 of Beto, Gillum and Abrams and one that says the Dems won't control the House when its sworn in (for any and all possible reasons, including simply not winning enough seats). Re: 2018 Midterm Elections
How was that only 2 years ago? It seems like more than a decade. Fuck, it's amazing how much has happened. As horrified as I was that night, I had no idea how truly bad things could get. Trump would turn the US into a dictatorship if he could, and he constantly tells us he would, and after 2 years, nobody has shown any effort to stop him. Sure, the Dems would have to resort to breaking the rules to stop Trump, but really not one Republican has lifted a finger. A few have given tepid lip service, but what we have witnessed is off the charts beyond any worst case scenario we could ever imagine. OTOH, not much has actually changed in my day to day life, other than obsessing over the lunatic in the WH. Sure, the upswing in pollution will soon show real consequences, and the destruction of regulations in all sectors of life..., the idiotic trade wars will eventually damage our economy, the enormous deficit and cuts in social programs and gutting AHA will hurt lots of people very soon, but Dems will be in power when all those consequences are truly felt, and the Republicans will blame it on the Dems.

Re: 2018 Midterm Elections
I'm so proud of you, Johnnie. 2 years ago, you would have laughed at the idea that you'd care about politics and be excited to vote. If nothing else, Trump did motivate a lot of people, on both sides, to take part in the political process.Johnnie wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 8:10 pmI've been addicted to politics since summer 2016 and it only intensified after Trump. I go to the politics subreddit multiple times a day. I read a bunch of WaPo, Politico, and various other articles daily. I follow more politically affiliated people on Twitter then I've ever cared to. I check polls weekly. I've registered to vote and voted absentee last month. I'm actually kinda bummed I don't live in Texas if only to help Beto. And I feel the same damn way.
And articles like this make me feel even worse: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/re ... the-house/
It's because I'm jaded and an eternal pessimist. The bad guys win in life and lose in the movies. Despite such blatant and obvious corruption in the current administration, there's no one person that can stop it. Plus, work stuff hurts my head daily and I'm still feeling effects of my failed deployment. I just can't see the good guys ever winning or people coming to their senses.
So yea. I feel you.

I’ve been in line for 20 minutes. Probably have at least that left. Largest turnout I’ve ever seen and this is the same time of day I generally vote.

The more I think about this I wonder if my vote has ever counted. Because my signature now is notthing like what I signed at 18. It does match my drivers license though.

Just got back from my polling place in the 856. I was number 39 in my municipal district, and assuming there's about 40 districts in my town, that means there's about 1600 so far by 7:30 am. Pretty sure that's high.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Anecdotal reports are good elsewhere too. I will try and hold some hope. If I thought things were being played straight in terms of votes counting and being counted correctly, I might even be optimistic. As it is, down to fingers crossed.

Ended up being 50 minute wait. Lady who has been working same district for 10 years said it was easily largest turnout they've had by 8 AM since she's been doing it.

Only took 30 minutes. The Mrs. was leaving the house when I was getting back, and she was back within 20 minutes. I guess the Amish come later in the day.

Re: 2018 Midterm Elections
It's incredible hearing about Americans waiting for hours to vote.
They have made it so easy to vote up here - in the last few elections, early polling was available for 5 days at pretty much the same number of polling stations as on election day. In 35 years of voting in maybe 50-60 elections, I have never waited more than 20 minutes.
But enough about me.
Good luck today guys.

15 minutes in and out at 7:30a. Though the woman working told me the rush this morning was big. I was around #1800 for ballot in my district, which feels high?

We are a smaller country so it's easier. Plus everything is centralized. Revenue Canada, Statistics Canada and Elections Canada. Provinces cant suppress the vote by unregistering people.Pruitt wrote: ↑Tue Nov 06, 2018 8:36 am It's incredible hearing about Americans waiting for hours to vote.

I felt dirty voting for Menendez, but Roy Moore fucked little girls too, and he got over 650K votes.

Hugin's company let my father-in-law die of CLL in a hospital less than 10 miles away from Celgene's HQ, despite many pleading letters from my wife, her sisters, various state representatives and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He wasn't worth their time, money or Revlimid. Makes my vote easier, and you're welcome to sublet my anger.

Same here. They have to tell you at the time before you vote if they don't think it's a match though. I literally have the same problem every time and finally officially changed it last time I voted. Last two times I had to show them my ID even though I'm not technically required by law to do so.

Seems like high turnouts in most places should favor the Dems given that it's a midterm, but no way am I going to let myself be hopeful ever again. I honestly don't think I'll ever be able to heading into an election regardless of the polls or the situation ever again.

And the Senate is stacked against the Ds this year, but really that's because of the Wave of 2006. So I guess not a bad problem to have.
I'm pretty sure that after today, the Dems will have gotten more votes for the presidency, House, and Senate. And if we're lucky, they'll control one out of those three.

Re: 2018 Midterm Elections
When I was in 8th grade I forged my dad's signature on a bad algebra test score which came back to haunt me when the next one was bad and my parents had no idea why I was doing bad all of the sudden. After the conference with the teacher, he says to me in the car "I know you know not to do that again, but damn if I didn't second-guess that I actually signed that test. Nice work".
well this is gonna be someone's new signature - bronto

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: 2018 Midterm Elections
Wife was 125 at 8am this morning in the rain. That is crazy high. I was only 200ish in 2016 at 7pm. No students in our district either.
I ended up giving all my staff an off the books hour to go vote when they see fit.
