Shit, Sheffield is part of the trade. I was ready to love that dude but I also tend to trust Cashman when it comes to knowing which prospects to trade and which not to.

So the Mariners did exactly what I've said other teams should do by prioritizing the top piece over multiple lesser pieces. Overall, I'm good with this. Paxton is an injury risk and Sheffield is one of the top lefty starting prospects BUT Paxton also had much better component stats in the majors than Sheffield had at AAA.

A lot of people see Sheffield's future in the bullpen. I like the trade, so long as it doesn't stop them from getting another SP like Corbin.

I can't remember the last time I was more confident of a free agent coming to NY than Corbin. Can't imagine this trade changes any of that.

Unless Cleveland sends Kluber to NY for a package centered around Andujar and the Yankees sign Machado.

Swanson came over in the Beltran trade, btw.

I'm a big no on Kluber assuming his price is like double Paxton's. 33 to start next year and everything ticked down just a little this season.

Its also pretty amazing that Cashman turned the 2nd piece for a (great) reliever into a legit ace.

Another guy on my Kluber list where I think the cost would be insane and there's a good chance he's starting his decline. Also he'd make Houston even better.

More than a few Indians fans were hoping they would get Sheffield and Frazier back if they traded Kluber to the Yankees.

I’m guessing the Indians didn’t want Sheffield back. Frazier’s going to rake though, presuming he gets a clean bill of health.

I’m assuming Cashman kicked the tires on Kluber, and Frazier destroyed AAA pitching in an extreme pitcher’s park last year (unsure what point you were referring to)..

Why Cleveland wouldn’t want Sheffield. I assume it would be a lot closer to wouldn’t do the almost one for one Seattle did.

Perhaps Cleveland already formed their opinion on Sheffield as potentially a great RP, and haven’t seen enough since the trade to change that opinion. I’m not saying a great RP isn’t something to be excited about, but maybe not for giving up 3 years of Kluber’s adjustment into a crafty, veteran SP.

One my favorite players and IMO one of the most underrated players in my 40+ years on this earth. I was hoping he'd play another 2 years to get into top 10 in hits and 500 homers. I thought he still had some gas left in tank but after 21 he bows out while still playing well.

My first thought was "OK, yeah the Mets are trying to sell tickets" and of course that's the foremost goal for a franchise financially at least, but I'll never understand that philosophy from a front office standpoint since the only thing that consistently sells tickets in any market is winning.

No one is going to show up because of a 36 year old former Yankee making $24MM per. Feels like this might be teams rushing to fuck up the first time front office guy.

C'mon, man. He's a future Hall of Famer. Of course he'll sell some tickets. I'm not saying he'll sell a shitload, but having Cano on the team vs. not having him on the team in a scenario where they go 72-90 either way, the scenario in which Cano is on the team results in a few more butts in the seats.

Of course, I don't know why they're interested in acquiring him for sure, but that's about the only plausible scenario. But even if that's true it's dumb as shit.

I don't even think its his standing as a would-be HoFer, I think its a cynical appeal to Dominicans. I just don't see it working. There's a difference between marketability (Stanton might hit the ball 600 feet) and steady greatness (Cano doubles a lot).

(I guess its also worth wondering what Van Wagenen's relationship is with Dipoto and whether he'd be willing to play along to drum up interest or gouge out someone else in the NL.)
