Welcome NHL Seattle

Post by brian »

Looks like Tuesday is the day. Presumably team would start for 2020-21 season. Same expansion rules as Vegas 2017. VGK is exempted from expansion draft.

It's been a fait accompli for months now, so don't think it changes much for anyone. Teams have been preparing to lose a guy after the 19-20 season even before the last offseason started. Don't remember how much service time a player has to have before he has to be protected so could see some teams bury prospects in juniors for an extra season though.

Was about to make a "wonder if Vegas protects William Karlsson ; )" joke but it appears he's started to play.

They better pick a cool local name...like 'Sockeyes' or 'Totems'. But chances are it'll be something truly lame.

At the time, Supersonics was a cool name (Boeing was working on a supersonic plane). Now...probably not. But still a fuckton better then 'Thunder'.

Totems, Rainers, or Kraken would be awesome.

I'm reading its 2021 for the expansion, which is a year deeper than expected and has some pretty serious effects on a certain team I watch. When you're rebuilding, that one more year of not-eligible to eligible is huge.

I like the idea of tying to the color palate of the other teams in the city...but sea lions ...not so interesting. A bit too close to the new NLL San Diego team (I know not many people will really care about that).

but it is not a new name...this looks to have been produced when they thought a 2014/15 inaugural season was a potential.

Certainly makes it easier to justify moving Arizona to the Central considering it's probably 50/50 at worst that franchise ends up in Houston. I think they should have took a longer look at maybe some different ways to re-align but under the circumstances this isn't the worst option.

Do we all agree that in 3-5 years we see Ottawa ---> Quebec and Arizona ---> Houston? No realignment needed in those cases. Then the league just has to worry about Florida.
The Ottawa downtown stadium deal appears to be a bigger train wreck than Arizona's attempt. I get the impression Bettman is done with Sens on/off ice drama.

Remember when we had the Houston Oilers for a hot minute in 1995 or 1996?

Sea Lions would be a terrible name, not just because the team would end up being called 'Lions', which is about as generic as Cougars or Wildcats.

Totems or Rainers...go for something unique and regional.

Would definitely be hilarious if Vegas wins the 20-21 Stanley Cup then is the only team in the NHL to not lose a player to the Sea Lions/Totems/Whatevers.

Think it goes to show that the newest franchises in the league are getting it right. Lean into what makes your town unique. Don't be hidebound to try and re-create some tradition like an Original Six team that will never exist no matter how hard you try.

That's what they were discussing. Talking about how most in-arena/stadium music choices are completely generic, and could be anywhere in the country.

I know that John In The Morning has been involved with the Sounders and updating their in-game music choices. They've gone from some 'Jock Jamz' heavy metal to Jimi Hendrix for the start of the match music.

Mitch has been completely erased from his old station. Its like he never existed.

But in doing a quick google search, it looks like he's doing a podcast now, complete with a Patreon subscription option.
The always outspoken and opinionated sports talk personality has found early success with his new venture already jumping to the third spot in the iTunes Top 40 for US Sports & Recreation Podcasts as of Tuesday morning. Levy released his first official episode on Monday, November 19th with co-host Jason Hamilton which lasted 45 minutes, episode two was 90 minutes long and included an interview with Rick Neuheisel.

“I’m equally humbled and proud to present the debut edition of “Mitch Unfiltered”. Apologies to those of you who expected and preferred something different. And beyond grateful to Jason Hamilton AND for all of your support.” Levy wrote on Twitter following the release of his podcast.

Levy spent 23 years in morning drive at KJR, but his tenure came to an end in 2017 after being arrested for soliciting a prostitute in what was an undercover operation.

Soliciting a prostitute is pretty close to smoking pot on my list of "meh" crimes.

I understand there are real issues in supporting both "industries" (in the absence of legalization.) And trafficking is a nightmare and vastly under-reported in this country.

But just like with pot*, if they'd legalize it, the vast majority of those issues would go away.

* - Pot being illegal causing it to be largely in the hands of criminal enterprises, big and small.

I pretty much agree with you. But Levy had one of those 'morals' clauses in his contract, so when he got busted, it was pretty much a no-brainer for the station. And it was pretty bad when he got caught...it was one of those 'Asian Massage' places, and when he pleaded 'Nolo Contendre', he said 'It was my very first time, and I really thought I was going to get a massage!'.

Feel bad for his wife and kids (2 boys, if I remember) though...
