For fuckssake, just admit it was a stupid fucking thing to have Gronkowski back there for a play in which there was no fucking way it was coming down to a jump ball in the end zone and that the only way that Miami was scoring was on a lateral and run. Jesus Christ.

I already said it was stupid but the defense I read is that Tannehill has thrown it 65 yards before (not sure if he could with a bad ankle) and the hail Mary has a higher success rate than the hook and lateral. He should have adjusted for having a QB throwing off a bad foot and having a broken down te.

The entire game was frustrating so it was a fitting ending.

I will defend Pats fans who won't admit that their coaches made a (rare) mistake by pointing out that unlike Bills, Browns or bengals fans, they are out of practice and don't know how to react when something like that happens.

Yeah. Fuck them all (except for my daughter who is a big time Pats fan).

In 4 years or so after their 3rd successive 5-11 season, let them remember the sight of Gronkowski flailing helplessly on the ground as they lose to the Dolphins as the moment when it became apparent that the dynasty was fast approaching its end.

Do coaches change out guys in personnel groupings on the fly like that? Would you even want them to? Seems clear they weren't prepared enough for that situation and should have had multiple packages ready to go depending on the field position for a hail Mary but I wouldn't want individual coaches randomly running guys on and off to try and compensate for something that should have been installed 4 months ago.

A dime defense that doesn’t include Gronkowski...pretty sure that was already in place...

Really don't know. So much football is like that. I don't think you can play dime there. You want another DB or safety in there with the last play team but they like the big jumper. Can you just change out a role without making it worse in the secondary. Mccourty knows what he's doing so maybe not that hard to adjust on the fly but I don't think theres a ton of sandlot going on in the NFL. Even less in the secondary where you get beat on breakdowns as much as speed or technique.

Kirk Cousins is a bad QB, and is consistently terrible in big games, and yet he's going to make a boatload of money based on being a master stat padder in garbage time and in games against bad teams.

This is a bad take. Bad. I mean, would the defensive backs who play the position professionally be able to handle a slight change to the formations they play every snap during the game?!?!?!? Gosh, I doubt it.

I mean, seriously?

I hope all the Pats fans that are justifying that decision see the slow lumbering broken body of Gronk forever trying to close the angle on a speedy running back but always coming up yards short in their sleep for the rest of their lives.

I gotta say, the overt schadenfreude that appears whenever anything bad happens to the Patriots amazes me. I mean, I understand it because I feel it too, but the degree of it is what gets me. Not just here, but everywhere across the innerwebs.

Well, he's an NFL QB and even the weak armed ones can throw 65+ yards. Arm strength in the NFL comes down to velocity over long distances, not distance itself.

Here he is throwing damn near 70 yards in the air without really stepping into it and getting hit as he throws (at 0:50):

He has shoulder issues and apparently turned his ankle earlier in game. Drake was on Le Batard talking about how it wasn't feasible so they ran the hook and lateral.

I think a lot of it is that when, mistakes are made, they are sometimes defended as though the person making the mistake (in this case Belichick, but other times Brady) is infallible. This is also followed up by aggressive rebuttals when the person who made the mistake performs well in the next game. An example is when there is a reasoned, well-written article talking about Brady's level of play dropping, but fans come with "See?" when he posts a great stat line against a shitty defense in the next game with lots of yards after catch by his receivers. Sorry, I read/follow Mike Tanier on Twitter.

I didn't realize that Josh Gordon was their primary safety, which is what the argument is.

JFC yes NFL coaches can not put Rob Gronkowski out there on the fly. They switch on the fly every single week. Every safety on the roster knows what to do in that situation, because the Patriots are that well-coached, right? Say Gronkowski got hurt in the previous series, does NE just play with 10 on the final play?

When? This year? He's hella banged up. I refuse to buy that he was going to heave that from his 25 or so to the end zone. That is beyond low probability. Bullshit.

How this wasn't evident years ago is beyond me. Watching him live (when the Saints went up to Minnesota) is even more staggering in the sheer amount of wide open guys downfield that he doesn't see.

Probably not but if he can get it to the 5 from closer to the 30, it could be tipped into the end zone. That's actually how most teams play that, they try to tip it back for a guy behind the scrum.

EDIT: You're probably right. I thought it was a bit closer than that. But I still maintain that just about every NFL starter can throw close to 65+ yards.

Other than Mahomes, I am not sure who else has the arm right now to get it 75 yards to the endzone, I guess.

That is just so low probability there, that I remain dumbfounded that Belichick judged that more likely than a desperate lateral situation in terms of having someone as relatively immobile as Gronk on the field (and someone who is...NOT a tackler). That was firmly stupid, from a a very good coach. As sometimes might happen. As happened in this instance.

ETA: He threw it from his 21. Maybe could have run into heaving it from his 25. Maybe.

That's definitely true. People want to crush Belichick so they go after him when he goes for it on 4th and 2 against the Colts, even though the move made a ton of sense and was at worst logical. But they are also results-dependent, so they crush Seattle for throwing from the 1 in the Super Bowl and ignore New England throwing from the 1 in the next Super Bowl, because this time Vic Beasley dropped the pick.

FWIW, Here's what he said. Read the replies if you want to enjoy Patriot fans calling Belichick a moron. For all the crap you guys give Patriot fans (like me) for always defending him, the spoiled Patriot fan who thinks Belichick has cost Tom Brady 15 Super Bowls annoys me much more (especially since the local media has built an industry off of this mindset).
