Haloti Ngata retires, which is worth mentioning on its own, but he did it from the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

He was probably stronger in the first pic, but also happened to have a lot of body fat to absorb punishment. I heard something shortly after he retired about how the biggest change was eating about 1/4 of what he normally did. But yeah, he's swole up like a june tick.

Many OL and DL are tired of all of the food they have to eat to maintain weight by the end of their careers. I know while in-season some of them are consuming like 7,000 calories a day which seems insane. So cutting back to about 1,800 (which yeah, would be a pretty "normal" amount for a normal man) probably is a big adjustment but maybe not entirely unwelcome for some.

Yeah, it's common for OL to shrink by half after they retire.

So the local sports radio show had one of the guys say they have a source saying that Jay Gruden has not been consulted on any of the off season moves.

Retiring would confirm that. Supposedly he didn't spend much of his salary cash either. Was kinda expecting it, but still sucks.

Malcom Mitchell retired too.

I was hoping he would play just at the end of the season and playoffs like Junior Seau did. Actually, that's a bad example. Let's go with Roger Clemens's last few years with the Astros.

I'm amazed that he's turning 30 this year.

To think he got through this many seasons being injury prone is outstanding for him. Had he not been injured in SB46, maybe the Pats get another ring.

Also I don’t think Gronk is a Hall of Famer but he’s 100 times more worthy of the Hall than Edelman.

Does Rush think Edelman is a Hall of Famer? I don't think even he's that crazy.

ETA: I'm not gonna pretend that I've never posted anything here designed to elicit a reaction, but the only reaction to "Julian Edelman is not even close to a Hall of Famer" should be "yes, that is correct". And it was even complementary towards Gronk!

I'd put Gronkowski in on the first ballot.

Maybe that's a bit highly ranked, but he's one of the all time greats at the position.

Edelman should only be there for Brady's induction. He's a Pats hall of famer, not a hall of fame hall of famer.

Gronk is going in as soon as he hits the ballot.

I think it would be touch and go if he played for one of 28 other teams but I’m sure he’ll get in. I give him credit that his career ended early because of injury but that’s not a benefit most players get.

Most players aren't that good. LaDainian Tomlinson could have retired after year 6 or 7 and made it. Barry Sanders lasted one more year than Gronkowski. Kellen Winslow, Earl Campbell, Gale Sayers, Kenny Easley, Lynn Swann, Dick Butkus, etc etc had similar career lengths.

Another reason it was smart to retire early. Some guys try to hang on and those last few injury-plagued seasons ding them apparently.

My father used to tout Gale Sayers' greatness, but there must have been something extraordinary for a guy with less than 1,000 carries to be in the Hall of Fame.

That is not the only reason Herman Moore is not in the NFL Hall of Fame. He didn't have enough before fading away. That would be like arguing for Demaryious Thomas.

I actually think Calvin Johnson is a good comp for Gronk. Injuries sapped him of his brilliance but he's getting in regardless because he was easily the best in the league for a good amount of time.

If he had retired after his age 29 season, his stats (including All-Pro selections) would have been almost identical to Gronk in an era with about 20 percent fewer passing yards (I think this largely equalizes the TE vs. WR comparison) He was the NFL single season receptions holder and had the most receptions over a three-year period in NFL history (at the time) and his yardage over that three-year period was the third or four highest in NFL history (at the time).

He just had the misfortune to play in Detroit and suffer some devastating injuries but tried to play through them.

I'm not comparing Gronk vs. Moore. Gronk was better especially relative to his position, but Moore was absolutely headed for the Hall of Fame before he got injured.

Terrell Davis.
It's odd, Davis really only had 4 full seasons and 3 massive years (led the league in rushing once).

I would think that if he's in, than Herman Moore should also be in.

In a team sport it's an unfair thing to base HOF credentials on, but I think the fact that Davis was one of the two driving forces on two Super Bowl-winning teams gives him bonus credit that Moore might deserve but doesn't get from the voters.
