So the Players is this week, but that is not the big news. Rather Sen. Chambliss hit a hole in 1. His Witness for the round...The President, , Mark Udall (D-CO), and Bob Corker (R-T).

Nice way to finish the Tractor Classic by Jordan Spieth. Almost 20 year-old picks up a big first win.
That shot from the bunker forcing extra holes (which he won) give him an invitation to the British Open. First teenager to win an event since 1931 (4th ever). Also good thing that went in because that shot was moving with some pace when it hit the flag and dropped in.

Mickleson and others take a crack at the "Happy Gilmore" drive at this past weekend's Scottish Open.

Jason Bohn had a 6-8 foot putt worth 300,000 yesterday. That's a lot of dough to be putting for.
He missed it, tied for second and took home a paltry 369k.

Re: A non Masters Golf Thread 2013
That was an excellent tournament, in fact. Yeah, Bohn just missed, slightly to the left edge, and oh man he knew damn well what that putt was worth.
Snedecker was very solid on the weekend. Hunter Mahan was leading after two rounds and withdrew early Saturday morning because his wife went into labor (she had a daughter); Snedecker smilingly and a million dollars richer said afterword that he'd be sending them a nice present. Mahan had been paired with John Merrick and when Mahan went home, Merrick was sent out to play alone in the final group of the day on Saturday and the third-to-last group of the day on Sunday. That's just a terrible mistake by the PGA/CPGA. Any other time I have ever seen a guy playing alone it was because an odd number of guys made the cut and the "odd man out" is the first group of the day on the weekend. That 7:00 AM Sunday morning tee time? That's where your group of one should be.
Wayne Gretzky's daughter's boyfriend was tied for the lead after 16 holes yesterday. And he (Dustin Johnson) was working on a round of at least -4. Birdied the 16th to tie Snedecker (who would, a group later, birdie it himself). But while Sneds was playing the 16th, Dustin took a horrific triple on the 17th. Speaking of "cost him money", that also cost Johnson the $300,000+ more he would have earned with sole possession of 2nd.
Thus ends the best three-straight weekends of the year as far as spectators go. The Scottish Open, the Other Somewhat Bigger Scottish Open and the Canadian Open all have crowds that don't yell stupid shit like "YOU DA' MAN! GET IN THE HOLE!" It is a pleasant summer relief from the nonsense that occurs at most other PGA stops.
RBC must have been happy. Very. The guy that they sponsor won their tournament.

Re: A non Masters Golf Thread 2013
Mahan withdrew 30 minutes before his tee time so the PGA has no choice but to send Merrick out last.
I would have delayed him even an hour more so he wouldn't be right up against the 2nd last group but they were afraid of rain since the start of the 3rd round was already delayed 90 minutes due to rain. If it had not rained, Mahan would have gotten the call while on around the 7th hole.
Also Snedeker's caddy is Eric Vail's son!

Re: A non Masters Golf Thread 2013
Did they send him out with a marker? They do that sometimes to keep the pace of play appropriate.
Edit: Merrick decided against playing with a marker.

Re: A non Masters Golf Thread 2013
Vail was a great Junior player and one of the original (?) or at least earliest Atlanta Flames. So, yeah, Snedecker's caddie is Canadian.
I understand sending Merrick out alone on Saturday. But Sunday? That's just strange.

Re: A non Masters Golf Thread 2013
I was at the Canadian Open on Saturday - in a corporate box at the 18th green (wife works for Shaw media).
We sat down with our brunch in the front row and saw two pairings play the hole before the airhorns sounded and a delay of over an hour followed. We schmoozed with clients and my wife's coworkers and then the golf started again. Ernie Els holed out from 65 yards for an eagle and we saw three other pairings come through before the rain picked up and started blowing into our faces. My wife is not a golfer or a sports fan so that pretty much ended our day in the box and it was far too miserable to trudge around the course. So we came home.
No point to the story other than to say that being stationary at a golf tournament is a truly boring sports experience - even with free food and rinks.

More ladies golf. Apparently a bit of a fiasco at the Solheim Cup (Ryder cup for the gals). 25 minute delay while the rules folks tried to find a ball in a nasty hazard and where to drop the ball. And they got it wrong. Caused a big backup on the course. Euros up 2.

Tiger shot a two under on his front nine. Trails his playing partner by five strokes.

A 63 for Philly Mick today -- 28 for his first nine, and 8 under with 7 to go. Great score, but it really looked like the 59 was in serious jeopardy.

Jim Furyk shoots the 6th 59 in PGA Tour history. At Olympic Club no less. Not like he pulled the feat at a glorified muni.

Nah, it was in Illinois. Conway Farms. Which is the course that took over the Western Open after Cog Hill. And, stupid me, I left to run errands after he bogeyed the (his) 14th hole. But what I did see was damned impressive. Not like guys were tearing up that course today; the next best was -6. And something like 43 guys (quick count), more than half the field (of only 70 top players), shot over par.

I was trying to figure how that added up to 58. The card only shows through 17.
4 on 18 for par; sixty-two. Not bad.

Refresh it. You might have just clicked to it moments before it was updated. I posted that while he was just finishing on 18 (Golf Channel). Tiger had a birdie putt on 18, although it appeared to be a good 25 or 30-footer. He missed it by maybe three or four inches. Thing is, he was utterly non-chalant all day. Someone on the Golf Channel described it as the most stress-free 62 you'll ever see. Sounds about right. Cruise control all day long.
