2019 starts on a bummer.

Andy Murray announces his retirement.

Will play in Australia and hopes to finish at Wimbledon.

Honestly, good riddance.

He is the whiniest headcase. Great player but I find him excruciating to watch.

Isner is playing a 7-foot tall American.

He lost the 1st two sets but won the 3rd. As expected all 3 sets were tiebreaks.

Australian Open changed this year to a final set 10 point tiebreak. Thank goodness.

Isner was up a break and serving for the 4th set at 5-4 and got broken. Lost the match in a 4th set tiebreaker.

So this Aussie Open is a pretty significant breakthrough for the younger generation of players. Tiafoe (age 21) and Tsitsipas (age 20) are already in the quarters — Tsitsipas by virtue of beating Federer. I expect Zverev (age 21) and Coric (age 22) to join them there. Zverev and Tsitsipas should both make the semis, too. We’re probably going to end up with a Djokovic-Nadal final but this is still shaping up as a great tournament for the next generation.

I don't follow tennis that closely, but I love watching the Aussie Open to see the shots of Melbourne. The other night they had a nice drone shot of the Yacht Club and Marina that I sailed out of when I living there.

Raonic is a good player but that’s a very disappointing loss for Zverev last night. Since 2017, he’s played like a legitimate top-3 player outside of the Slams, but at some point he needs to start backing that up with better showings in the majors. Maybe Tsitsipas can spoil the party but a Djokovic-Nadal final looks almost certain now.

(And yes, I know that the audience for this post is probably just Degen.)

Zverev has a temperament problem. He tries to win every point and gets upset if anything goes wrong.

Who smashes rackets in the first set? The greats sometimes lets a set go 6-0 and moves on.

Because Djokovic is back in a big way and looks damn near untouchable now. It has to be completely demoralizing to play against him when he’s returning this well because you have to play so well just to hold your service games.
I posted this after last year’s US Open semis, and I think it holds up well! I just caught the very tail end of the final but what an insanely dominant performance. Nadal appeared to be playing his best hardcourt tennis coming into the match and got absolutely steamrolled. Djokovic had 34 winners vs. only 9 errors and a 5-0 edge in service breaks. Federer and Sampras will always be my favorite players of the all-time greats but IMO, a locked-in Djokovic is the most unbeatable player I’ve ever seen. You just cannot beat him in baseline rallies and good luck trying to serve and volley against that return.

I don't watch much tennis, but I caught a bit of the Nadal v. Tsitsipas match recently. I said to my wife, "That guy looks like he just walked out of the 1970s tennis era of Bjorn Borg and Guillermo Vilas."

What a surreal month for Canadian tennis. We’ve already had a teenage woman win a 1000 tournament, and now 2 teenage men in the semis of a 1000 tournament! Shapovalov-Federer will be a visually stimulating match at the very least, especially for the fan of the one-handed backhand.

It might take a while for his success to translate at the majors, since best-of-5 is a different animal, but Felix A-A looks legit.

That was unfortunate. FAA served for both sets but tightened up and got broken both times. ended up losing 7-6, 7-6.

It's an outrage someone did an underhand short serve on a guy who stands 50 feel from the baseline. And he hit a weak approach shot into Nadal's body! My panties are all bunched up.

Besides the pace, it's amazing how many of those shots are so close to the baseline...and then returned.

It's insane that they've both been so good for so long, and Djokovic is right there too. This has been a fun match.

38 major titles between these two and 3 Olympic golds. Just insane.

ETA - Djoker has 15 major titles, and all three of them have the career grand slam.

Happy to see Federer win today but I’d be very surprised if he wins on Sunday. Djokovic is beatable on clay (at least by Nadal and Thiem), but he’s an almost impossible opponent on the faster surfaces when he’s locked in like he has been for the last 12 months.

He doesn’t get as much love as Federer and Nadal but Djokovic is an all-time mentally tough athlete. The fifth sets that he won today and against Nadal in last year’s Wimbledon semis were two of the highest tension sets of tennis that I’ve ever seen.

Federer had 2 serving match points and blew it. He lost his forehand for a bit early and then his backhand late. Djokovic was so consistent. So frustrating. Wouldn't be surprised if Djokovic surpasses all of the records in the next few years.

Federer will rue the match points but at the same time Djokovic deserves credit for hitting a good deep return on the first one and a passing shot winner on the second one.

For the match as a whole, Federer was the much more consistent player. Djokovic played two poor sets (although part of that was tanking games to save energy), but was rock solid in the three tiebreakers.

Federer could have done more with that approach. Djokovic's return is so good. Never thought McEnroe would say someone has a better return than Agassi

Yeah, I don't think Novak thought Federer would be so incredibly strong in the 5th set, which is why he was fine with it going 5. But Roger is Roger. Fuck around and he'll jack you up.

Agassi himself has said he thinks Djokovic at his best is the best player ever. Djokovic is definitely the best I’ve ever seen at hitting aggressive returns even against really good servers. He’s so good on hardcourts that he could match Nadal in majors by next year’s Australian Open.
