C*nt

Post by Jerloma »

Is this okay now? I was under the impression that it was but then judging from the reaction of the people on my tennis court the other night, maybe not?

Also, I realize that if I thought it was okay that I wouldn't need to hide it behind the protection of an asterisk but I think having curse words as hyperlinks increases the chances of a site being firewalled.

Silent indignation but then at dinner afterwards they told me they couldn't believe I yelled that. I asked why and they said it's gross and vulgar. Females of course. I asked if there were any terms for male genitalia they found offensive. They did not.

A gentleman doesn't use that word in a woman's presence. And it's not gentlemanly to use it to describe a woman, especially since there are dozens of as effective words. Hell, just use "asshole". It's gender-neutral, race-neutral, sexuality-neutral. It's an equal opportunity put-down.

Having said that, I use the word all the time to talk about males. I refer to Trump as a cunt probably daily.

Definitely a really bad idea to use that word in any woman’s presence. And frankly I’m surprised how often it gets used on this Board considering that no one here ever uses racial or homophobic slurs.

As an aside, I remember talking several years ago to an English friend who had only recently moved to the States about that word. He noted that he had to be careful to avoid using it because it’s considered so much more offensive in the US than in Britain.

Today, many feminists argue that cunt must be revived. One reason is simply because it’s a better descriptor for female genitalia than “vagina.” The word vagina has Latin origins, and refers to a sword sheathe—the female sex organ, in this linguistic rendition, is simply a holster for the penis.

Technically speaking, vagina refers only to the “sexual passage of the female from the vulva to the uterus.” Cunt, however, describes the whole shebang, external and internal, including labia, vulva, pudendum, vagina, and clitoris. Thus, it accounts for and allows female sexual pleasure. To reclaim the power of their sex, women must take back the word that best describes their sex organ, feminists argue.

After having lived abroad, America is just full of righteously indignant adults with delicate sensibilities.

That being said, as a dude who gets outwardly angry at the drop of a hat when I mess up and swears when doing so, people get really put off at sudden outbursts. It "looks bad" and is "unprofessional."

Would screaming "fuck" have been different? If so, then it seems silly they are hung up by a word. If it was the screaming itself, then it wouldn't have mattered what you screamed. Regardless, America has created a culture that that word is the ultimate swear in any context. Everywhere else it can be used as a term of endearment in the right context.

The second para is really interesting to me. I was watching a lot of Brit-based TV and the word just isn’t taboo like it is here. I had to be careful not to let it sneak into my lexicon.

While I would say the word is completely off limits in public, I stand by my use of the word in the Swamp last week to describe DHS Secretary Kirsten Nielson. It's not punching down on a lying POS who defends separating children from their parents and keeping them in cages, then says when they made the decision to implement the policy, they didn't know that separating infants and toddlers from their parents could cause psychological issues. Who could have known? So yeah, there are some exceptions when the word is deserved, but in general, it's completely off limits.

I'm not looking for an excuse to say it. I was being self-deprecating and that's just the word that came out. Perhaps I've been watching too much stand-up comedy and it seems perfectly acceptable in that genre incidentally. I have no problem ditching a word that offends people. I haven't said the R-word in years because of that and holy shit did I love that word. It doesn't mean we can't have a conversation about why it might be offensive.

Sure, just want to be clear where I stand, but having a discussion is fine as long as the discussion ends where we all agree not to say it because we're not in the UK and it's completely unacceptable here under any circumstance. But it is interesting how different English words have different impact in different countries, sure.

Alright, so explaining to me that a guy using the C-bomb is the same as a white person using the N-bomb would actually be a useful argument if you were trying to make an argument and not just climbing on some moral high horse.

I actually think that not assuming that women are so delicate that they'd be offended by a word because they don't like the way it sounds is in fact a feminist position to take. If, however there's more to it than it sounds gross and it's directly linked to a history of oppression and subjugation as the N-word is, that's a completely rational reason to scrap it.

I can confirm that in Australia its used a bunch, with the same basic meaning as 'asshole' or 'dick'.

It's also used as 'c*nty', which is the same as 'whiny' or 'bitchy'.

I viewed the word as similar to "bitch," but more vulgar. I don't think calling a woman a bitch is an affront to ALL women, and I felt the same way with the C-word, but if it offends people here, I'm done using it here. I would never use the word in public, and saw this place as a safe space I can say things I can't say in public without judgment. Actually, I still do, and with all sincerity, if it offends fellow Swampers, it's out.

It's not an answer. It's an assertion. Also, not the reason I was sufficiently scolded. Also, he doesn't even believe that because if he did, he never would have admitted to using the word himself. I'd think you'd be more perplexed by that. I mean, at least I can just claim naivety.

I can tell you that my wife has a visceral, extremely negative reaction when she hears that word, regardless of whether or not it's directed at her. And, she puts up with a lot of foul language from me otherwise, with no reaction.
