From what I read, he has made enough other bets on Virginia that, no matter how the game unfolds tonight, he will win money (the $300K ticket only cost him $1,500). He has apparently turned down an offer for $125K through a website where you can sell off future bets. He did sell a $800 futures ticket on Texas Tech at 125-to-1 for over $20K before the Final Four game (winning value is $100K).

Re: 2019 NCAA Tournament Thread
Yeah, I worded that poorly. I'm really talking about the people - and I've been hearing it for years now - that say they can't bear to watch Virginia play because it's bad basketball. And I'm sure you can plug some other programs in there, like Texas Tech now.A_B wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 12:17 pmThat's a weird thing to say, likely colored by your fandom a great deal. I sure don't remember you extolling the virtues of Cincinnati in the mid 2000s and those terrible to watch play Louisville teams shortly thereafter. People like different styles.
That said, it's also easier to be locked in on defense for a whole game when you get to rest on offense the whole game. I appreciate defense (Cal's UK teams are usually decently balanced, but the defense is more dependable, as Joe K mentioned above) but it isn't my favorite style to watch being played.
If you've actually watched Virginia play much - unless they are dismantling your team - and you enjoy good basketball, I honestly don't understand how you can say they are hard to watch. They do play a slower pace, but they don't just hold the ball on offense and grab on defense. Not at all. There's a reason why the basketball nerd Twitter and YouTube accounts are regularly breaking down UVA offensive sets (and yes, the defense too).
Slow and/or low-scoring doesn't have to equal ugly.
That said, the game tonight might get ugly, because it's possible neither offense will get rolling. But I seriously doubt it will be as bad as that UConn-Butler game from 2011 (both of these teams tonight are better at both offense and defense than either of those teams were).
Totally Kafkaesque

Virginia is a lot more fun to watch than those Bo Ryan Wisconsin teams as well. But I’d still rather see a 90-89 game.

Yeah I dont believe replay should be used that way. Not in super slow motion.

UVA wins the title with an aggregate score of 201-200 in its last 120 minutes of regulation basketball.

I thought the replay at the other end looked more obvious. But what do I know...
If I'm dribbling the ball and you knock it away, if you get it as I'm dribbling down, for sure my fingers will come down and graze the ball. Because it's a human reflex to move towards an object that is lost. If you get it as I'm dribbling up, then my fingers will move away. The reflex to move towards the lost object is still in effect but it's too far away.
Are we dissecting sports rules to that extent?

Fell asleep at some point in the second half. Woke up and watched the last minute or two. Somehow didn't know it was OT until I heard it mentioned on the radio this morning. Great game?

Re: 2019 NCAA Tournament Thread
Man, what a game. And what a tourney run.
I wish I could bottle whatever it is that has gotten into Virginia's opponents with about 4-5 minutes left in these games. In each of the last three, UVA had a lead and the other team started nailing (or in Purdue's case, continued nailing) contested threes to get back in the game - actually a bit ahead in all three before UVA answered in the last seconds.
So, who would have guessed that UVA would score 85, the most by a team in the championship in a decade?
On the Moretti turnover, I agree that it's a bit too much to look at replay that way. The refs made the right call technically (it hit his fingers last), but in any other situation, all involved would have agreed that it was off Hunter. Frankly, the previous OOB replay should have gone UVA's way as well for the same reason (the Tech dude hit it last). That said, there was about a minute left and UVA was up 2 at that point, so it's not like it absolutely cost TT the game or handed it to UVA.
Man, I can't believe my team won the tournament. It is surreal.

Aye, congrats Dave. I actually picked UVA to win it in one of my main pools - playing the bounceback theory. Still didn't win the damn thing even though I was only one to pick UVA as I lose by one point under the scoring method used in that one.

Re: 2019 NCAA Tournament Thread
The first half and most of the second half was what we all predicted - incredibly tough to score points, 0 fast break points (maybe an exaggeration, but not by much.)
Then, with VA pulling ahead around the 12 minute mark, it turned into a classic. TT stormed back, and it looked like they might pull it off (up 3 with 22 seconds) and the Cavs reeled it back in. OT kind of got away from the Raiders, but if a game goes to OT... Classic in my book.
Congrats to Dave. Quite a run.

Re: 2019 NCAA Tournament Thread
I absolutely HATE* that call. I'm glad they don't review that same type of play in soccer, because when a guy comes barging in on a tackle, the benefit of the doubt goes to the team that was holding the ball. The could certainly review everyone one of those and a percentage would get overturned, but there's a spirit of the game involved there. (Yes, there are obvious instances where it clearly bounces off of a player and is correctly called. But the equivalent of a pinky fingernail? Just annoying to me.)Shirley wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 6:39 am

To me, like Shirley is saying, if it's that insanely close and there's ANY kind of question, you leave the call as is. I've seen a lot of that get overturned this year and it just seems wrong.
*ETA - Strong language here... I get that the refs are in a no-win situation here.
