Yeah, I came to this realization when I was a sophomore in college and I saw a guy clearly older than me wearing a Tim Couch jersey on campus when Tim Couch was a Freshman at UK. Of course, I haven't bought any kind of jersey in ages, let alone one with a number.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2019 9:22 amhe signed for 2019, so you're safe for this year
eta: this discussion is spawning my thoughts on jersey-wearing as I get older. I only wear soccer jerseys anymore anyway, so it's kinda a moot point for me, but I don't think that guys should be wearing the jerseys of athletes 20 years younger than them

Re: MLB Regular Season 2019
I was never much of a fan of wearing team jerseys in general (golf attire with your team's logo is fine), but I do make an exception for throwback gear.
Vintage gear looks good, and points because the name on the back of the jersey has likely long since retired.
ETA: except football jerseys. That look just doesn't work. Unless of course you're talking 1920s or 30s. Then you're wearing a jersey that requires business casual pants.

This is a shirt you can wear out to dinner.

I think there is a difference between wearing such a jersey out on the street versus wearing it to the arena for a game. In any well-supported NHL arena, 80% of the fans are wearing a jersey with a player's name and number. It's part of the communal experience. You also see that (to a lesser degree) at other sporting venues.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Fri Mar 22, 2019 9:22 am eta: this discussion is spawning my thoughts on jersey-wearing as I get older. I remember when the Mets traded Mike Piazza and the television cameras followed him walking to the stadium for his last time as a Met. He was wearing a Mario Lemieux Pittsburgh Penguins sweater.

Yeah, if you're wearing a jersey to a game (NHL and NFL especially) that's one thing. If you're wearing it on a random Tuesday for dinner at Applebees, that's another.

numbered jerseys? Yeah, that's a sign of stunted growth. I'm talking when fashion statements bled through the original 8 team NFL.

I really don't care much in general regardless of the scenario, but I'm failing to see how wearing your team's jersey to an actual sporting event where your team is participating is somehow a character flaw.

I think you can both believe that jerseys (especially football and hockey jerseys) are appropriate at sporting events and also weird/inappropriate/whatever term you want to use no matter the setting when a man is wearing the jersey with the name of a much younger player

My rule is don't wear a jersey of a player younger than you. If you're older that any current players, go with a retro jersey of someone from your youth, or just be an actual adult and wear a team logo shirt/jacket instead.

Re: MLB Regular Season 2019
I had a longtime reluctance to wear a personalized jersey, because it felt like I was hero-worshipping guys who were younger than me.
Then I finally broke down in 2016.
Of course, the jersey I bought was Addison Russell. And no way can I wear that one anymore.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: MLB Regular Season 2019
I'm going to make a preemptive exception for good and nice dads whose kids get them the jersey. You're stuck then.

What if the team has only existed for one year and these weird, arbitrary rules don't apply?

I meant "out to dinner", not necessarily at the sporting event. And prolonged adolescence =/= character flaw. Sorry I wasn't more clear about that.

Red Sox extended Sale 5/150.

Re: MLB Regular Season 2019
They did not get a Sale at that price.
(Seriously though, this is one of those deals that makes sense for both sides. If Sale escaped the season injury-free and pitched at an average (for him) level he would have earned a lot more in free agency, but every pitcher is one bad slider away from their career being fucked.)

MLB 2019: This Time It Counts
Ah right fools, it’s March 27 and that means it’s baseball time! Time to find out who actually wants it more and who’s been lying about it! It’s opening day and therefore it is not the critic who counts, but the man who is actually in the batters box, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and that black goop, who if he fails at least fails because of bullshit like defensive shifts and one-batter specialists! Which will not survive the second Trump term I assure you! Who is ready for this shit? How are the Twins looking?

Albert Pujols is second all-time in MLB history with 310 career intentional walks and still trails Barry Bonds by 378.

Have the Mariners been eliminated from the playoffs yet?
Re: MLB 2019: This Time It Counts
I have no feelings towards any Philly teams, either negative or positive (professional...Villanova was one of my first favorite teams because they beat the hated Georgetown and I've liked them ever since). It's weird, I've never given that any thought until right now when I came to post how fucking badass that shirt is and I want it now.

Counterpoint: Villanova fans are bad and so are all Philadelphia pro team fans.
Also so is Baltimore. Holy shit is that a miserable roster. They shouldn't score a run this series.

Have Stanton and Voit on my fantasy team and they open against Cashner. That seems...favorable.
