Except Rex, his Arn impression is top notch. Do we have anyone that looks like Sid? That would be a great reenactment.

STARTING LINEUP

Image

2019 Salary: $5.5M

Switch-hitting backstop rass put up an impressive showing in his first year as a full-time catcher, securing an All-Star berth. While not a big power hitter, his smooth stroke and good batting eye make him a consistent contributor to the offense. He won't embarrass himself behind the plate, though his arm isn't the greatest.

Head Scout says: "rass enjoys playing the devil's advocate."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

Previously stowed away in Burlington's farm system, Rams Fanny burst onto the scene for the Oats in 2018, putting up outstanding across the board numbers on his way to the Shrew Conference Rookie of the Year and team MVP awards. His fast bat and good eye should see him continue to hit for a high average, with power to the gaps and a fair share of HRs. Though spending most of his time at first, he has a strong enough arm to make an adequate catcher.

Head Scout says: "Managers love Rams Fanny. There's no quit in him."

Image

2019 Salary: $13.0M

Jerloma was pried away from his hometown Woonsocket Sealfisters prior to last season, and despite a fall-off from his 2017 numbers, provided decent production in the upper part of the batting order. J-Lo is an aggressive, slashing hitter with excellent bat control and good gap power. He has decent speed and is sure-handed, if not especially rangy, in the field.

Head Scout says: "Jerloma has great knowledge of the game."

Image

2019 Salary: $6.5 M

sancarlos latched on with Holland and had a typical season, offsetting his unremarkable offense with Gold Glove quality fielding. sancarlos is a spotty contact hitter without too much power, but where he really shines is in the field, with excellent hands, good range, and a solid arm. Despite his age, he has above-average speed, but is sometimes prone to baserunning errors.

Head Scout (still) says: "sancarlos dogs it too often."

Image

2019 Salary: $765k

Stuck behind veteran Pruitt at third in Burlington, P.D.X. shined in his debut as a full-timer, posting a .324 average with 58 extra-base hits and 30 steals. His biggest area for improvement lies in his struggle to draw walks, with only 41 last year. In the field, he is a fair third baseman with a good arm, who can also catch in a pinch.

Head Scout says: "P.D.X. knows how to put on the charm."

Image

2019 Salary: $4.4M

Mister D jumped over from Burlington after indignantly turning down a contract extension, and despite an increase in playing time, saw an overall drop in his production. Mister D is about an average all-around hitter, with a good batting eye, though he curiously saw his walk rate dip last year. While not fast, he is a competent outfielder and has a very good throwing arm.

Head Scout says: "Mister D is thick headed."

Image

2019 Salary: $8.3M

After a disappointing and injury-plagued rookie season in Burlington, BSF21 lived up to his promise in Holland. Following a slow start and an unfortunate facial hair episode, BSF established himself as one of the league's better leadoff hitters, posting a .306 average with 49 steals, though his walk rate leaves room for improvement. His great speed makes him a rangy outfielder, and his arm is more than adequate in center.

Head Scout says: "There is nothing ever uncommon about BSF21."

Image

2019 Salary: $6.0M

Unsigned by Burlington after a second-half slump marred a promising start to his 2017 season, duff bounced back in 2018 with his new team, improving his average by 30 points and leading the Oats in HR and RBI. The native Hoosier is a strong, aggressive hitter with good power to all fields, as well the discipline to draw a good share of walks. He is a solid outfielder with a strong arm, though he committed an unusually high 10 errors last year.

Head Scout says: "duff has a good head on his shoulders."

BENCH / PART-TIME STARTERS

Image

2019 Salary: $1.4M (Contract Year)

Grizzled veteran Avram arrived in Holland from the rough streets of Philly to spell rass at the catcher spot. At bat, Avram struggles to keep his average above the Mendoza Line, but he earns his paycheck behind the plate, with quick reflexes, solid instincts, and a strong arm.

Head Scout says: "Avram is often told he looks familiar."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

The Sybian had a disappointing season at the plate, with only 8 of his 41 hits going for extra bases. He hopes to bounce batch to match his previous reputation as as a useful pinch hitter and backup. He is surprisingly nimble around the bag at first and can back up the corner outfield positions in a pinch, though his arm is only slightly stronger than a noodle.

Head Scout says: "The Sybian is always up for a good game of cards with teammates."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

A dual citizen of Colombia and New Jersey, elflaco gives the Oats depth at the middle infield positions. A fair hitter with occasional power, flaco's downfall is his tendency to chase high pitches out of the zone. With above-average speed and outstanding instincts, he makes an ideal pinch runner. He is an adequate fielder, though with a somewhat weak arm.

Head Scout says: "elflaco keeps his nose clean."

Image

2019 Salary: $650k

Square Rob
is a classic "jack of all trades, master of none" who can play just about anywhere, if not at an especially high level. Nonetheless, his versatility makes him a useful asset. He has a reputation as a tough out, though his performance at the plate last year was anemic at best. On the bases his speed is average, though he has a curious knack for making terrible decisions. His relatively strong arm makes third his best position.

Head Scout says: "Square Rob likes to do crossword puzzles in his spare time."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

Goody two-shoes Canadian MaxWebster joined the team midseason after injuries depleted the roster, and stole a handful of starts when Square Rob wasn't cutting it. One of the AAA club's top performers, Max is a wizard in the field with the range and arm strength to play all infield positions at a high level, though his hitting skills may not be up to a major-league level.

Head Scout says: "MaxWebster never takes a break."

Image

2019 Salary: $3.5M

Veteran vagabond Nonlinear FC worked his way into a regular platoon role last year with a better than expected performance. A slashing hitter, he'll rack up a good number of singles and doubles, though he has a tendency to get overzealous and strike out a little too often. With good speed, he is a heady runner and a competent outfielder who can cover all three positions. He can occasionally leg out a hit on a bunt.

Head Scout says: "Nonlinear FC is usually in the center of whatever hijinks are going on."

Image

2019 Salary: $650k

Likeable minor league vet cerrano looks for another opportunity to carve out a role for himself after splitting time last year time between AAA and a handful of appearances at the major-league level. He is a so-so all-around hitter, though he does have a notable knack for drawing walks. His decent full-stride speed is undermined by a slow first step.

Head Scout says: "cerrano has good leadership skills."

Image

2019 Salary: $650k

Like cerrano, DaveInSeattle struggled to find playing time for the big club in 2018, though he had a memorable game-winning HR in the playoffs to temporarily stave off the Oats' elimination. Dave holds his own at the plate enough to see regular pinch-hitting duty if the roster has a spot for him. He can field the corner outfield spots adequately and is a fair runner.

Head Scout says: "DaveinSeattle is too cocksure for his own good."

STARTING ROTATION

Image

2019 Salary: $10.5M

After surprisingly ditching Burlington to try his hand as the staff ace in Holland, degenerasian turned in a highly impressive stat line, though he was plagued by an inordinate number of early exits with minor injuries. Not overpowering, degen uses his low-to-mid-90s fastball to set up a strong changeup and slider. Impressively, he allowed just 7 homers in 31 starts last year. His stamina remains a question mark.

Head Scout says: "degenerasian has great knowledge of the game."

Image

2019 Salary: $6.5M

Previously frustrated in Burlington's bullpen, Rush2112 proved himself a top-notch workhorse, averaging over 7 innings per start, and may have pushed 20 wins with stronger run support. He was rewarded with a handsome salary bump in arbitration. Rush boasts a mid-90s fastball, with a good curveball and changeup, though his movement leaves a little to be desired.

Head Scout says: "His ship isn't coming, and he just can't pretend."

Image

2019 Salary: $3.8M (Contract Year)

Crafty veteran "Doc" howard latched on with the Oats and capably ate up innings in the middle of the rotation. The Doctor is an extreme groundball pitcher, relying on a mix of sinkers, forkballs, and sliders to bait hitters into banging balls into the dirt, though he'll rack up his fair share of K's as well. He re-signed in the offseason for a significant discount.

Head Scout says: "howard is known for his sense of humor."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

After shattering the league's gender barrier, Moreta was promoted to the rotation early on and rocketed to an 8-2 start before coming back to earth and ending with an about average stat line overall. Moreta's limited but potent arsenal features a blistering fastball that nears 100 MPH, along with a solid splitfinger as a change of pace. Over the offseason she's been working on adding a slider in the hopes of building on last year's performance.

Head Scout says: "Moreta is seen as a leader in the clubhouse."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

blundercrush's overall average stats belie a wildly inconsistent run of very good and very bad outings, bouncing and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, though he showed enough promise to be tentatively penciled in as a starter going into the season. blundercrush's fastball tops out in the low 90's, so his success relies on an array of breaking and offspeed pitches along with good control.

Head Scout says: "blundercrush either internalizes or is just impersonal."

BULLPEN

Image

2019 Salary: $535k[/b]

Johnnie leapt at the chance to be a full-time closer after coming over from Burlington, but struggled through a difficult season recording 10 losses and 13 blown saves. Oddly, his walks and home runs allowed were low, with the main culprit being an unusually high number of dinky hits. Hopefully this will just prove to be a fluky aberration. Not overpowering, Johnnie's game revolves around using his changeup and sinker to induce more ground balls than a pair of sandpaper boxer shorts.

Head Scout says, "Johnnie puts in long hours."

Image

2019 Salary: $1.4M (Contract Year)

Expected to provide another hardy veteran arm, steve was rocked by a number of terrible outings early on and relegated to mop-up work from the bullpen. If he regains some of his previous form, he could sneak back into the rotation if someone on the back end falters. At his best, steve keeps hitters on their toes with a sneaky delivery and an expansive arsenal of pitches, topped by a fastball that still hits the mid-90s. He's one of the best in the business at laying down a sac bunt.

Head Scout says: "steve is Mr. Hustle."

Image

2019 Salary: $800k

teeteebee, formerly Burlington's AAA closer, did competent duty as Holland's primary setup man. He has a good arsenal of cut fastball, slider, and change. His stuff and movement are solid, but he sometimes struggles with command.

Head Scout says: "teeteebee walks the talk."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k

Tom 1860 brings another capable arm to the middle of the bullpen. Tom has good command of superior if raw stuff, using his animated delivery to challenge hitters with his cut fastball and sweeping breaking ball. He possesses the stamina to be a potential starter, though it would likely be best for him to expand his repertoire first.

Head Scout says: "Tom 1860 is involved with the local animal shelter."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k[/b]

Lefty specialist TheHumanComa drew from his experience of Quebec bar fights to prepare himself for the trials and tribulations of being a middle reliever. THC uses a cutter-and-curve combo and good control to garner a decent amount of strikeouts, though his pitches sometimes have a tendency to flatten out and leave him susceptible to serving up HRs.

Head Scout says: "TheHumanComa is slow to learn from experience."

Image

2019 Salary: $510k[/b]

devilfluff was promoted early in the season to give the bullpen another lefty arm, and had mixed results in limited duty. His quality fastball and slider give him good strikeout potential, but his lack of movement and control make him susceptible to high walk and home run rates.

Head Scout says: "devilfluff enjoys a drink with teammates after the game."

Speaking of which...I hired a new bench coach for Burlington over the off-season and it doesn't look like he's gotten off on the right foot with a number of people:

Image

Trying to figure out what the problem is...the best I can guess so far is that he strongly favors current performance and scouting reports over what players have done in the past. But maybe he just looks like an asshole:

I was patting myself on the back for coming up with that one, but apparently The Simpsons had already done it a number of years ago.

I’m a fan of Manassas Asses, but yeah the Regina Monologues is good, too. Rockford Files makes me laugh out loud every time I see it, too.

Song by Mike Post. Good chance he composed your favorite TV show’s theme song.

Giff was suspended for four games for arguing a strike call? WTF did he do?
BFJ is the town wizard who runs a magic shop. He also has a golem that he has trained to attack anti-Semites.

Speaking of Manassas, thought this made for a pretty good generated lede this week:

Apparently he "made contact with" the umpire. Here's the full story:

Thank you - This is good stuff. Work sucks. School sucks. And as a result, I tend to escape with bourbon. That’s not good.

This is good escape material.

WEEK 4 UPDATE

Image Burlington Sports Frogs
- This Week: 3-4
- Season: 13-13 (4th in Div, 2.0 GB)
- League Power Ranking: 18th
- Next Week: at Woonsocket (3 games), at Regina (3 games)

Image Holland Oats
- This Week: 3-3
- Season: 13-11 (2nd in Div, 2.0 GB)
- League Power Ranking: 10th
- Next Week: at Rockford (3 games), at Duluth (3 games)

NEWS AND NOTES:
- Prima donna of the week is BFJ, who sent me the message below. Odd thing is, he's been getting a lot more playing time so far this year—bapo! started the year in a slump, so I moved bronto to left and put BFJ in at 1B for most games. I guess that's not enough for him, though, and he feels entitled to dictate his place in the lineup:

- So, you might remember a few weeks back I was talking about moving the Nassau team and taking suggestions for new names. Some good candidates, but was waiting for something to "jump out." Finally found it, inspired by the recent Swamp discussion of the week. Please welcome to the league the Kentucky Fruit Salad, whose team colors represent everyone's favorite fruit salad ingredients—watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew:

The fighting hosers are tough this year.

And their uniforms are awesome.
