Kucherov should be suspended 3 games. Let's see if the NHL is serious about head shots.

Can someone explain to me why there appears to be almost zero correlation between regular season results and postseason results in the NHL? I get that the intensity level raises in the postseason but that doesn’t seem like a full explanation. The same is true in the NBA but it’s much easier to predict playoff outcomes in basketball.

Tampa Bay is an outlier. No explanation for it.

The other 15 teams were separated by 9 points so anything can happen.

Regardless, I can see why teams that made it did. Chicago would have lost every one of these WC games by 5. The intensity is insane!

Lightning are still "only" +475 to win the series, which seems...optimistic? (The Lightning are 12-1 still to win the Stanley Cup, worse odds than half the teams in the playoffs.)

Tampa Bay is an outlier. No explanation for it.

The other 15 teams were separated by 9 points so anything can happen.

I will say this, and I've referenced it a bit talking about Tampa this year... I don't think there's another sport where what appears to be the "best team in the league" tends to shit the bed more than in hockey. A couple of reasons:

1) Hot goaltender/defending. It would be tough to find another sport where one player can pretty much win a game or a series as a hockey goalie can. And the snowball effect on the mentality of the shooting team just feeds into it. And then the whole team gets insane about back-checking and blocking shots. It's awesome when it's your team, it is the absolute worst when it is happening to your squad.

2) Scoring is just harder. I know this is kind of a "no duh" point, but it can't be understated. Playoff hockey is at a completely different level, especially in the neutral and offensive zone. AND, a lot of teams that win the President's Trophy (like Tampa, and the Caps teams that did so), blasted through the regular season by outscoring their opponents at a ridiculous clip. That just doesn't work come playoff time. AND, playoff hockey can exposes defensive issues, because of the intensity of play.

3) Not unique to hockey, but an important factor is that you are playing the same damn team night after night. If there are match-up or system issues, you have to punch your way out. (Obviously, in the regular season, if you have a bad match-up, you lace up against a different team 2 nights later and move on with your life.) I mean, in basketball, the team with the best 5-7 guys is going to use their skill and system to beat up on the other team. You've got 4 lines in hockey and on a really zany night your bet player is out there for about 1/3 of the game. You can't truly dominate a game at that usage.

Totally agree that beyond Tampa, most teams were going into the playoffs with a "it could go either way" type of mindset. But Tampa looked good on both ends of the ice, so this really is crazy to see.

I think 3 is probably big. I'm no hockey analyst, but I imagine the perfect D scheme (and intensity) can work before the other team can fully identify and respond.

(Also helps when the first guy to score 129 points in two decades decides to take himself out of a near-must-win Game 3.)

I agree with all three points.

Motivation and intensity.

CBJ heard all week how they were going to be swept. They were an afterthought. Tortorella definitely played on that.
Then they went down 3-0 in Game 1, Tampa probably relaxed and Tortorella re-iterated it.

In basketball the Clippers are also hearing they'll get swept by the Warriors but what can they do about it? Defend harder?
The can run people into the boards or punch them in the face.

Heard this on the PDOcast re: Kadri, but the swallowing of whistles in the playoffs (which has probably had some effect on the Bolts) likely leads to some of the shithousery that you see. I didn't watch TOR/BOS Gm 2, but it sounds like there were multiple times that DeBrusk and other Bruins weren't penalized like they would have been in the regular season, and Kadri may have decided to take matters into his own dumb hands.

I mean, I get the frustration angle, but the motherfucker cross-checked a guy (who had just delivered a clean hit, and the Leaf that got hit popped back up) in the face. There are so many other things, even dirty things, he could've done there and probably escaped a penalty. just cross-check the guy on his arm, or his hip/ribs above the pads.

Not sure folks understand how painful that shit it is, especially when the cross-checker is NHL-strong.

No, this dumb fuck hits him in the face for all to see.

3 games, minimum.

The last thing I'm doing is defending Kadri, I think the only thing from that game that I've seen is his crosscheck to the head. He should get at least the series. I'm just saying.

I'm not defending the reaction, but DeBrusk could have easily blown out Kadri's knee earlier. It was justified anger poorly executed.

The DeBrusk hit on Kadri was just a weird play, Kadri flying in from having just served a penalty. IOW, he's coming in real hot from a weird "watch your six" angle, and then angles across the ice. I just don't think DeBrusk had much, if any, time to change his direction before he ran into Kadri. That's Part A.

Part B is that, yes, right after that hit Kapanen (I think) cross checks the shit out of DeBrusk in the lower back.* So it's not like it went completely unpunished.

Part C is that for all his rolling around and grimacing, Kadri had a pretty miraculous recovery, coming back out to later tip in a goal. I'm not saying he wasn't hurt, but it's not (at all) like DeBrusk took him out of the game.

=-=-=-=-=

I know no one is out right defending the guy. In general, there's really nothing that rises to the level of, "yeah, but..." when it comes to cross-checking a guy in the face. Especially not in the playoffs where in-game you've fucked your linemates and team, and then getting suspended takes you out of probably the rest of this series.

* - Which went unpenalized, which... That's what I meant when I said Kadri had options with DeBrusk that didn't go straight to Defcon 1.
