Notre Dame
Looks awful (the church, not the college)
Re: Notre Dame
Wow. That's decidedly not good.
Birds don’t suck. They lack the necessary anatomical structures to do so.

I have a feeling that the crew working on that scaffold has got some explaining to do.

Its right on the river...do they have fire boats?

Re: Notre Dame
I'm really fucking bummed about this. As a practicing Catholic, Notre Dame is probably the second most important cathedral on Earth. And knowing how this is one of the most visited places in the city, this could have significant casualties.

Re: Notre Dame
Watching the coverage, apparently experts have been warning about impending catastrophe for awhile. Which is why the scaffolding and stuff is up all over the church.
Hate to say this, but I found some comfort in this (apparently) just being the result of crumbling infrastructure and rehabilitation work gone horribly awry.
That wasn't my first thought when I turned on the TV a few minutes ago.

It looks like it's spread throughout the entire cathedral.
No one killed, but this is still a tragedy.

I've had CNN on for a minute and want to turn it off already. Interviewing an American tourist and asking if he had any indication as to the cause of the fire...

Watch the French coverage. They could be spouting inanities, but they sound classy regardless of what they may be saying.

Re: Notre Dame
I wonder when they (if they haven't already) switch to ensuring the fire doesn't spread to the adjacent buildings. if that front tower catches and collapses it could get very bad very fast.

You know, his reasoning is completely off, but Trump is right about one thing - CNN does suck.

Sure. My issue is that they'll cover this with dedication and a sense of gravity then go back to covering the president as entertainews.

Re: Notre Dame
Yeah, CNN's coverage of this is completely absurd. They're saying that 700 years of history has been erased as if that's how history works and doing the thing where it's even worse because this is the week they celebrate the whole zombie thing. Lich, if you will.

I mean, to me, no channel is as bad as Fox, because no other channel has prime time devoted to racism, xenophobia, etc. etc.
CNN is chasing dollars and doing a relatively poor job of covering a shitty presidency in the process. They don't do that AND peddle lies and hatred on a daily basis.

watch France 24, it's the English, French news.
https://www.france24.com/en/live
apparently workers are still running in and out of the building to save as much artwork as possible before the whole thing probably collapses.

That's all people really can do at this point. Ever since 9/11 laypeople (i.e. non-engineers) have a visceral knowledge of what happens in blazes this severe.

French sources saying the fire chief says the fire could spread further and they may not be able to save the cathedral.

they need to save the island, not let fire get to the bridges.

Re: Notre Dame
I got to visit in Christmas Eve a few years ago and was delighted. I thought it was such an amazing building. Plus the mass was cool too. So this hurts to watch. I'm not Catholic anymore, but I hate seeing something like this happen.
