Are you thinking of fruit cocktail? I remember that being a big deal in the 80's and was cut up pears/peaches/grapes/cherries drowned in like a pint of corn syrup:

Nope.again, google image search shows predominately what I call fruit salad.
Are you doing a search on Bing or Lycos and using google as a verb, because most of the images I'm seeing for fruit salad include melon (albeit some are hidden under better fruit like pineapple, strawberries and blueberries).

This is fruit salad:

So is this:

Sometimes even this:

In fact, at potlucks growing up there was at least one variety of both of those. Fruit salad in my experience usually has some kind of "dressing" be it honey or juice or yogurt or cream or something. It's not just cut fruit in a bowl and it NEVER had melon in my childhood.

I do see more clearly that there is melon in some of the fruit salad GIS results. I maintain that is not fruit salad, but you monsters are ruining the algorithm.

I will say this: melon was a rare delicacy growing up in East Kentucky. Which of course, may lead to there not being melon in "yankee salad"

Although, my wife, who grew up in the big city here, agrees that what Mister D posted is just cut fruit and that fruit salad needs some kind of "dressing" like i mentioned.

AB's last photo is almost certainly ambrosia, which if we're going to insist on differentiating between fruit "cup" and fruit "salad" should definitely be pointed out.

1) Honeydew is straight garbage

B) Both honeydew and cantaloupe are routinely included in fruit salad, in most instances overwhelming both the taste and overall composition in a highly negative way. Fuck people that fill up fruit salad with melons (including water)

iii) I don't have a third point.

Just to throw my hate (heh, best typo everm I'm leaving it) in the ring.

All melon is trash. Water. Honey. Dew. Musk. Lope-based. Whatever it is, it's garbage. Stop eating it. You fuckers probably like Red Delicious apples too.

Last pic is an abomination and if that's mayonnaise you would get escorted out of my church potluck. Can only assume it's yogurt based but my preferred dressing (which is really Thanksgiving stuffing) is some sort of bourbon? spiked sweet vanilla cream sauce. I'm sure a foodie would have a name for that but if it's still fruit salad I'll take it every time.

OK, what the fuck is "cut fruit?" You've said that like four times in this thread already. I mean, I know it means "fruit that has been cut," but is it some esoteric regional terminology that people in a two-mile radius around Big Bone Lick apply to what every other person in the English-speaking world calls fruit salad?

Cut fruit, mixed fruit. It's what you guys are saying is fruit salad. It's just various fruits cut up in a bowl. Would be the same a fruit platter if the vessel were different.

"There are a number of home recipes for fruit salad that contain different kinds of fruit, or that use a different kind of sauce other than the fruit's own juice or syrup ..."

The first sentence of the description states yours is a sub-genre.

If you want to have it be fucking awesome:

1) Leave out 90 percent of the melon content. MAYBE a few slices of cantalope and/or water melon. Again, fuck off with the honey dew.

2) Sprinkle some sugar on it and toss (tossing fruit salad is eating ass in French Polynesia.)

3) Again, I only have the two points.

Sorry, I should caught all the way up. Yeah, what I described is how you can create a very simple syrup. Lots of folks just let the juices sit to serve the same purpose.

Cut fruit is when it's not mixed together. Usually a tray of pineapple chunks and delicious melon chunks of all varieties and strawberries. Sometimes toothpicks and a sweet dip are involved. Once the fruit is mixed together it becomes a salad.

AB, if I put lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and carrots all mixed together in a bowl, is it cut up vegetables or a salad? The dressing doesn’t make it a salad, the tossing of the ingredients makes the salad.
