Despite the lack of talent and bad goalkeeping by Thailand the US was finishing very well. Bodes well for the rest of the tournament.

Also if you're looking on the bright side if you're a Thai fan, that game was on at 2 a.m. in Thailand so most people slept through it.

Believe it or not. Thailand is the tier 3 team in your group. Chile is worse.

I see nothing wrong with running up the score at the World Cup. Take that complaint to a 9th grade girls basketball game.

If the problem is that it suggests there shouldn't be 24 teams at this event, well maybe that's a point.

FIFA needs to spend money and resources to develop women’s soccer to be sure, especially outside of North America and Europe.

Yeah - kind of like women's hockey tournaments at this point.

The score isn't the issue. It's the choreographed celebrations that were over the top.

It's not womens hockey, it's just one bad game out of 52. There are many contenders in this tournament.

It’s the celebrations once they were up 10 goals. Do that in a similar situation when the score is out of reach like that in a men’s tournament and you’ll get hurt. I mean, you’re up 9-0 and you’re sliding on your knees? Cringe-worthy. Like, START > SETTINGS > DISABLE CELEBRATIONS stuff.

It’s a petty, downward-punching look for United States Women’s Soccer.

So hypothetically if you were a world-class player -- you've spent literally your entire life living, breathing and playing soccer. 5 a.m. practices, hundreds of hours in the weight room. You're playing on the world's biggest stage in the biggest tournament on the planet for your sport and you score your first World Cup goal.

So you're just going to head over to the sidelines and grab a straight-razor and slash your jugular after you scored a goal because the score is 9-0?

Complaining about players celebrating goals in a tournament that should feature the best teams on the planet* seems like the kind of thing that someone who is just constantly looking for things to complain about would do.

I fail to understand where regardless of the sport there is a constant chorus to take the joy of the sports:

Make sure your home run trot is exactly 16 seconds -- no more, no less.
No dancing in the end zone.
No celebrating after goals when you're 4 or 5 or 6 or whatever I deem to be too many.

At a certain point, I question why you're watching sports in the first place.

I'll add one final thing and that's if the US were somehow taunting or insulting the Thais then I would feel much differently, but I didn't see any of that. But I don't think the act of celebrating scoring a goal is taunting.

Pretty sure after 4 and 5 Alex didn't do too much celebration. Others around her did, but she didn't. But of course, she has been there before. Same thing for Lloyd.

You’re missing the point. It’s got nothing to do with any insipid, unwritten rules of baseball, or the NFL’s no-fun-league personae.

It has everything to do with the fact they were genuinely celebrating goals as if they were major accomplishments. They weren’t. Thailand was a clearly overmatched, dispirited and beaten squad.

Talking about the score. You do realize they were dancing with each other up 12 goals, right? That’s ugly, and smacks of the elbow Barkley threw against that player from Angola in the ‘92 Olympics. They were up by like 30 points at the time (like 4 minutes into the first quarter).

I think this strikes the right balance. A player like Pugh, getting her first WC goal, I get it, celebrate even though the score was 8-0 or whatever at the time. Seeing the bench storm the field with a choreographed dance at 11-0, 12-0 and 13-0 was unnecessary. I don't have a problem with running up the score in a WC match, in some ways I think it's more insulting if they stop trying to score. Rapinoe has been my favorite player for a long time, and I was happy to see her score but her celebration was a bit embarrassing. First time WC scorer, or a player coming back from a major injury, or a spectacular goal, fine, but half the goals were really weak and a mediocre goalie easily saves it, those didn't require the full on team dances. All that said, I don't feel that strongly opposed to the celebrations. Made me cringe a bit, and I thought Morgan took the classy route, but not a huge deal.

Though the production crew did a brilliant job cutting to a 5yo Thai girl crying while the bench danced.

I have nothing against running up the score, it's the World Cup. Heck Thailand is the 3rd tier team in this group and even won a match in 2015.
The last two world cup cycles, Thailand beat Vietnam for this spot in heart-crushing victories. I would have loved to have seen Vietnam get crushed 13-0 by the US, that in itself is an achievement that is unachievable right now.

I think that's exactly right. It's a massive achievement for a team like Thailand to even make the World Cup. They knew they were going to lose and really were trying to keep the scoreline as low as possible to maybe try and sneak into the round of 16 as a third-place team. I think it's a bit insulting to the Thais to insist the US shouldn't have tried to score*, especially considering that goal differential is the difference between a tougher and easier round of 16 matchups (something else that many are conveniently forgetting.).

Framing it as someone sort of "MURICA! FUCK YOU!" to the Thais by scoring as much as possible when Sweden would have done the same to them in the same situation if they had played Thailand first is stupid as hell. These are world class athletes on the Thai side as well, not some people that got plucked out of the stands and forced to play the big, bad United States. They knew what they were facing and they handled it with dignity. Honestly, the women's game is superior to the men's game in some respects not the least of which is that you have much less cynical play like you would have seen in a similarly overmatched men's WC game.

* For the record, not something I've seen here, but have seen from serious self-styled sports columnists, most of whom only deign to watch soccer every couple of years.

IMO, I think if you tried to get away with deliberate, choreographed celebrations like that (with the game out of hand) in the men’s game you’d get bloodied, plain and simple.

Also, I disagree with the mean girls take. That’s pretty misogynistic, no? It was simply a series of tone deaf displays of mean-spiritedness, regardless of gender. And because it’s the World Cup and how long they practiced to get there doesn’t change any of that.

Again. Missing the point (at least the one I’m making). You can run up the score all you like because of the tiebreaker rules. It was what they did after they scored the goals where they wound up belittling Thailand, and themselves in the process.

I legitimately, literally think it would be one of the best things I've ever seen if this inspired the Thais enough that they double down on their women's soccer program and come back in 2023 or 2027 and beat the United States in a World Cup game in response. I would very much celebrate that.

Oh I do have a different take to add......Ladies arguing for more pay and equal treatment...I would go full on celebration commercialization. Have everyone on the team auction their celebrations off. Then the team just turns is on the system. Yeah we have full choreography...That 13th goal celebration...Each member of the team got $1K from Gordon's as they bought the fish celebration. Goal #2 the selfie....Google bought that one to promote the pixel. Then you just admit to selling out because you don't get paid like the men.

I would very much celebrate that.

Kung Fu movies are like porn. There's 1 on 1, then 2 on 1, then a group scene..

I wouldn't put too much stock in any of her takes. She's been trolling the US coach any chance she gets and is basically just trying to get attention any way she can now that her career is over.

If you are on the us women's team you have scored a gazillion goals and you know better. Wlulax got it right and someone's taking an icebath.
