I would say this, though: Go poll all these grown ass men in MLB and NHL, where the code stuff is most prevalent. They take this shit pretty seriously.* I just find it "funny" that so many people that haven't been in those situations take such issue with it, while the guys actually living that life are all about it. Doesn't necessarily make it right, but I think people should probably try to understand their reasoning a bit more.
I didn't just virgin birth this opinion, they're literally the guys who helped me cultivate this stance.

I think it's telling that the Thai women weren't too upset about it (and I was checking out the Thai news websites as well to see if there was anything said there, but I saw nothing), the reason being they're world-class athletes who can handle their shit and not some aging never-was wistfully remembering the time they played varsity baseball one year and thought they were king shit of turd mountain.

Whatever. You said this was a gender thing which it is not and you attacked Nonlinear's perfectly reasonable opinion implying (or maybe more explicitly) that it was based on gender bias. Guess what, athletes at all levels (and genders) take games seriously.

I find it "interesting" that the discussion goes from exacting some payback via a hard foul to punching someone in the face/breaking their wrist with a slash/throwing a fastball at someone's head.

I copped to posing a straw man argument earlier. Maybe some of you can dial down a bit? Jesus.

Yeah, seriously.

I did not call anyone sexist on this board. I specifically said the talking heads on TV. I made sure to state that for a purpose. I know better.

Not taking about anyone on here, but I definitely thought some of the reaction whether on Twitter or in the media was straight up sexism, but sexist in two different ways -- criticizing the US women for celebrating too much because women don't know how to handle their emotions, but also sexist towards the Thai women as if they can't handle themselves and deal with being disrespected (to whatever extent you think they were -- from "not at all" to "extremely") on their own in their own way, essentially removing their agency.

The latter is what I was referring to as well. I don't recall a ton of angst when a 2 seed blows out a 15 and the bench gets fired up for the walk-ons scoring. (And they're amateurs.)

Because that is the appropriate level of celebration. What if the walk on hung on the rim for 5 seconds, grabbed his nuts and screamed at the bench like he hit a game winner? Id guess he might not get to the rim the next time. And ive seen basketball guys get pissed for much less. Like taking a three at the buzzer (or worse shot clock) up 30. Thats the sort of thing you ought to be able to get over but im quite sure there has been "hold me back" type pseudo-aggression in that situation before.

Did any of the USWNT players hang from the cross bar while grabbing their vaginas?

I wish. But dancing with teammates that arent even in the game isnt far off. And 13-0 in soccer is 146-12 in basketball. If youre up 100 you shouldnt really be cheering much at all.

Yup. The Thais are proud to be there. As I said before. It's an achievement to lose 13-0 to the US. Something about 20 other Asian countries wish they could do.

Gutting loss there. I really loved watching that team play. They just had no idea what to do with their three goal lead.

If they are going to strictly enforce the rules against keepers moving, then they need to move the penalty spot back a few yards. (Which they should do anyway.)

Whoa.

1) PK for stuff where it's denying a goal.

2) Penalty shot back a yard or two when it's PK to settle a squabble.

Just to tease it out a bit:

The penalty kick was VERY originally meant to right a wrong. The advantage was supposed to be pretty stupendously in favor of the aggrieved team having been denied a goal.

So, in the instance of an obvious handball or a shitty tackle in the box, yeah, PK.

But to add a bit more skill and variability of the PK situation during tournaments, I think all of the Swamp is agreeing we should petition for a 1-2 yard draw back.

Legends.

They should equally crack down on outfield players entering the penalty box before the kick is taken as well.

I don't think goalie off the line should be reviewable. Maybe that's falling into the NFL trap of picking and choosing, but if the linesman can't tell, then let it go.

If this Cameroon-NZ match ends in a tie (unlikely, but stay with me here), then the Chile-Thailand winner (if there is one) would advance to the Round of 16.

If the score holds at 1-0. Cameroon will finish ahead of Nigeria on fair play points.

Chile would have to beat the Thais by three or more goals for the Nigerians to not advance I believe (if this result holds).

Say what you want about 16 of 24 teams advancing, but it's pretty awesome when you have a tie game like this where both teams need three points to advance. You seldom see both teams sending everyone forward on offense.
