Not that you all care what non-soccer watching former Swampers think of things, but Oiler is absolutely banging the drum that Spain should have had a penalty in the 97th minute. The Spanish striker may or may not have gotten run over from behind in the box. It looks like the US player (blonde?)(Ertz, maybe) impedes her ability to take a shot. It's hard to tell if the US player gets the ball first, and the Spaniard whiffs, or if there's contact there. I've only seen one angle of it, and to me it looks inconclusive. A thought that I had was that often on plays like this, it takes VAR a minute or two to buzz down for the ref to take a look at it. In this case, the game ended shortly after. VAR couldn't restart a match after the final whistle, could it?

It can. The match cannot end on a penalty kick (like the game cannot end on a defensive penalty in the NFL).

That doesn't answer my question. Once the ref has blown the whistle to stop the game, can the game be restarted? My assumption is no. Oiler's point is that Spain got hosed on what should have been a penalty. He's also (rightly) pissed that we got no other replays, and no discussion after the fact. Curious if they'll address it after this match.

A bit of hyperbole here, but letting that kid take the penalty kick on the team's first scoring opportunity of the game - when the sport's #2 all time scorer is on the field - was one of the worst coaching decisions that I have ever seen.

Spain sure gave us more of a game than I ever expected. The funny thing, my first thought was that it's good this team got tested, and showed grit to pull through, it gave me more confidence, but when I saw France needed extra time to beat Brazil (without seeing or hearing anything other than the score), I felt great that France is weak or not playing well. Just a weird moment of catching my unconscious biases.

Completely agree that Rapinoe has lost a step or 3. She has been my favorite player from 7 or 8 years, but I think Press brings a lot more to the game. Also agree Morgan should have been pulled for Lloyd around the 60 minute mark. She hasn't looked good the last 2 games, and it's clear she is nursing some sort of injury. She was slow to get up in the second minute, and about 1 more times, and was almost invisible. Press for Rapinoe and Lloyd for Morgan at 60, and the US would have generated a lot more chances.

I put more blame on the defender than the goalie on the goal. Yeah, Naher was way too casual and put Dahlemper in danger, but Dahlkemper didn't react, and turned the ball into the middle. She had time to one touch back to Naher, or turn outside and use her body to shield off the defender. Naher was screaming at her before the ball got to her, and she was completely unaware of the danger.

First PK was soft, but I think had to be called. 2nd was weak. In slow motion, it looked like a dive, but I could see it taking a step or two to feel the pain. It looked like she took studs to the thigh, which has to hurt. Not the worst penalty call, but probably shouldn't have been called.

Totally agree on Rapinoe...she's been a great player, but her best days are past her. I think Ellis needs to make the tough decision just like with Wambach 4 years ago.

Would love to see Lloyd, Press, and Heath up top. And Horan in the mid-field.

Wouldn't it make sense to have Press or someone with speed wear down the other team for 75 minutes then bring on Rapinoe late + for potential PKs?

(I know I'm not supposed to call them PKs.)

EXCLUSIVE: Trump says it's not appropriate for Megan Rapinoe to protest during national anthem
President Trump on Monday said he does not think it's appropriate for Megan Rapinoe, a co-captain of the U.S. women's soccer team, to protest during the national anthem.

"No. I don’t think so," Trump said in an exclusive interview with The Hill when asked about Rapinoe's actions.

Rapinoe has previously knelt during “The Star-Spangled Banner." During this year's Women's World Cup, she has abstained from singing along during pregame ceremonies. Rapinoe, who is gay, has referred to herself as a "walking protest."

Trump, who has suggested NFL players who protest during the anthem shouldn't be in the country, disagreed with Rapinoe's actions but offered praise for the women's national team.

"I love watching women's soccer," he said in the Oval Office. "They’re really talented."
Yeah....how many minutes do you really think he's watched? And by 'really talented', he means 'Alex Morgan is totally hot'.

I wouldn't start Lloyd, but I think she would have made a big impact subbing in for an ineffective Morgan around the 60th yesterday. Lloyd definitely isn't the player she used to be, which is why she has moved from a central midfielder to a target striker role. She is an absolute wrecking ball of fury up front, and I don't think many, if any, defenders can handle her coming on late in a game.

I loved her until we listened to her memoir. Hearing her own spin on her life, especially her fractured relationship with her parents, teammates and her long-time boyfriend, my daughter chimed in, "I just don't like her." The fact that it was Lloyd and Solo on one side, and the rest of the team on the other side says it all.

Yeah, Hope Solo is a train wreck... Not the best ally if you're trying to win American soccer fans over. Most of us grew tired of her act many moons ago.

As you know, JAP were runners up last WC, having won the whole thing in 2011. I'm not betting against them, considering this is only the second time Holland have been at a WC. (expanded to 8 from 5 in 2015, now they've got 9.)
